I've been waiting for this trailer since I saw it was confirmed. I wasn't expecting a horror take on it, but I think I like that.

They were adolescents- kids- too young to be X-Men, but old enough to start the training that would allow them to fully understand and harness their profound mutant powers. Professor X brought together Cannonball, Karma, Moonstar, Wolfsbane, and Sunspot to become the first New Mutants team. Over time, Magma (Amara Aquilla), Cypher, Warlock, and Magik were added to the team and, as they learned to become more powerful mutants together, they learned another important lesson: It's okay to act like normal kids. The New Mutants enjoyed their status as mutants and their youth. But when duty called, maturity set in, and the New Mutants went into action- though sometimes not without consequence. During an assignment, Cypher was shot and killed after leaping into the path of a bullet destined for his teammate Wolfsbane. Although their membership remained fairly constant throughout their early history, the team was constantly in flux. Shortly after forming Professor X was infected and influenced by a Brood egg. The New Mutants helped fight it off, but afterwards the Professor left for space to recover, leaving the group without a leader. The team briefly joined their rivals, the Hellions, led by Emma Frost, but eventually they came under the leadership of a reformed Magneto. The New Mutants were extremely apprehensive to being taught by the X-Men's arch-enemy, and they eventually were proven to be right when Magneto returned to his old ways after becoming White King of the Hellfire Club. Magik was reverted back to a little girl after the Inferno Saga. Moonstar stayed on Asgard and became one of the Valkyrie. Wolfsbane, Rictor, Sunspot left the team after X-Tinction Agenda. Wolfsbane and Rictor stayed on Genosha to rebuild the country. Sunspot went to run his late fater's company. Warlock was killed during the X-Tinction Agenda by Cameron Hodge. After X-Tinction Agenda, the young heroes came under the tutelage of the mutant soldier Cable and eventually became the strike team X-Force. This new team consisted of Cable, Cannonball, Boom-Boom, Domino, Shatterstar, Warpath, and Feral. Their first test as a team was against Masque an his Morlocks and the New Brother Hood of Evil Mutants. Siryn also joined X-Force when the team helped her defeat Juggernaut and Black Tom. Recently, the concept of the New Mutants was revived as one of several teams of students at the expanded Xavier Institute for Higher Learning where they not only learn to master their powers, but are also given the chance to receive a full education. This incarnation of the team was formed when Professor X enlisted the aid of Danielle Moonstar in recruiting several new students for the school, including the wind-manipulating Sofia Mantega (Wind Dancer), the organic-decaying Kevin Ford (Wither), the skill-mimicking David Alleyne, and healer Josh Foley. Along with the pheromone-generating Laurie Collins (Wallflower) and the electrically charged Noriko Ashida, the sextet became the new New Mutants squad with Moonstar as their faculty advisor. Other former New Mutants who came to join the school as faculty were Xi'an Coy Manh (Karma) and Rahne Sinclair. Other squads of students were also formed, each with their own advisor, including Cyclops' team the Corsairs, Northstar's Alpha Squadron, Iceman's Excelsiors, Beast's Exemplars, Wolfsbane's Paragons, and Emma Frost's Hellions. Julian Keller (Hellion) was assigned as the latter's team leader; other members included Cessily Kincaid (Mercury), Santo Vaccarro (Rockslide), Brian Cruz (Tag), Jay Guthrie (Icarus), and Sooraya Qadir (Dust). The New Mutants quickly found themselves at odds with the Hellions and were assigned to work off their hostilities by competing against each other in the school's first Field Day training exercise. The Hellions emerged triumphant, much to the New Mutants' chagrin. The two teams soon clashed again after the FBI arrived to arrest Kevin Ford for the murder of his father. Julian sought to rescue Kevin and enlisted Sofia's aid. The New Mutants, with the help of Jay Guthrie, managed to prevent the Hellions from further exacerbating the already tense situation. The charges against Kevin were ultimately dismissed; afterwards he opted to transfer to the Hellions while Jay became a New Mutant like his older brother Sam before him. Later, the New Mutants teamed up with Julian and Moonstar to investigate supernatural happenings in the mansion. Together, they discovered that a mutant ghost named Jeffrey Garrett was responsible and were able to pacify him after performing a séance. Soon after, Jeffrey joined the Institute's Lower School for younger students. Subsequently, following a Field Day exercise against the Paragons that the New Mutants won, relationships between the students became strained after a brief affair between Josh and Rahne was made public. Rahne left the school as a result just as Sean Garrison arrived to take up the position of school counsellor. Garrison had initially declined the offer, but upon discovering that his estranged daughter, Laurie Collins, was a student at the school, he decided to accept in the hope of winning her back. After the House of M|M-Day, New Mutants, Hellions and other squads, disbanded. Some members of New Mutants and Hellions joined a trainee team of X-Men. The original team eventually reformed as an independent squad of the X-Men. This squad have faced great challenges including Necrosha, the attack on Utopia by Bastion, and the events brought on by Norman Osborn and the Asgardian known as The Serpent. Recently, there broke out a fight within the X-Men which caused them to follow either Cyclops, who was in favor of protecting the mutant race via militant force, or Wolverine who favored starting a new school in order to educate and protect the younger generation of mutants. Many members of the New Mutants were torn between their personal convictions and their duty to the mutant race. Cannonball and Karma decided to follow Wolverine, while the rest stood behind Cyclops and his decision. With the ranks diminished Cyclops appointed Nate Grey, also known as X-Man, to lead the remaining team, which consists of Cypher, Magma, Danielle Moonstar, Sunspot, and Warlock.

It is slated to be released on April 3, 2020, and will be the thirteenth and final installment in the X-Men film series. Due to the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company, The New Mutants will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. [2] This will also mark the final film the X-Men franchise. However, she stressed that it has yet to be pitched to the studio. In May 2015, Deadline reports that Josh Boone was hired to direct and co-write, alongside Knate Gwaltney, a film adaptation of The New Mutants comic-book series. [11] Acting as a spin-off to the X-Men film series, the film will be written by Boone and Gwaltney, while Donner and Kinberg are attached to produce. [12] In August 2015, Boone shared an image of the script which he was writing along with Gwaltney and was "not done yet. " [13] In October 2015, Boone had finished the script for the film with Knate Gwaltney, and tweeted that the first draft for the script is complete. The title team's roster had also expanded to include the character Warlock. Boone explained that he brought Neustadter and Weber onto the film to write a new draft of their script while he and Lee were busy on another project. Weber would write the script with the films line up to include Danielle Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball, Magik, and Warlock. [19] In November 2016, Coming reports that Demon Bear would be the main antagonist in the film, the site also reveal that 20th Century Fox is currently targeting a Spring 2018 release date, the film's tone is describing as a "Stephen King meets John Hughes-style horror movie" and that Nat Wolff is being eyed for the role of Cannonball. [21] [22] The film had entered pre-production in Boston, Massachusetts by April 2017, in preparation for filming to begin in that city. Location scouting had been taking place, including at Medfield State Hospital, which was previously used as a filming location for Shutter Island. Several weeks later, the studio officially announced the casting of Taylor-Joy and Williams, and was "making serious efforts to find ethnically appropriate actors" for the cast, widely searching for a South American to play Sunspot and a Native American to play Moonstar. By then, Kinberg was producing the film with Karen Rosenfelt; McAvoy was no longer slated to appear in the film; and Wolff was no longer in the running to portray Cannonball. [30] Boone had previously stated that he does not like horror films, except for "classic ones" such as The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, and The Shining, but was looking to "pioneer and champion doing prestige versions of horror films" based on his love for horror novels such as King's works. At the end of the month, Charlie Heaton was in talks to portray Cannonball. [31] At the start of June 2017, Zaga, Dawson, and Heaton were confirmed to have been cast, and newcomer Blu Hunt was cast as Danielle Moonstar after an extensive and challenging international search that prioritized "ethnic authenticity". At the end of the month, Dawson exited the film, and Alice Braga was cast as Reyes in her place. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like The Shining. [39] On October 2017, Boone said that A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors was also an influence on the film. He confirmed that it is set in modern day; clarified that Warlock was not in the film, but could appear in a sequel; and said that the Demon Bear would not be the main antagonist of the film, just that "it's very much inspired by that run on the comics. " [40] On January 11, 2018, The New Mutants was pushed back to February 22, 2019, 10 months from its original release date: April 13, 2018. Insiders say one reason for the change is for the studio to avoid having an overlap with X-Men movies in certain overseas marketplaces, where The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 would have been in theaters at the same time. [1] In February 2018, it was reported that The New Mutants was undergoing reshoots to insert a new character before release [41]. On March 27, 2018, the film was pushed back yet again from its previously scheduled release date of February 22, 2019 to August 2, 2019. According to sources from Collider, Fox ordered reshoots to make The New Mutants scarier in tone, even going so far as to add a new character. While test screenings were reported to go well, and director Josh Boone was satisfied with his cut of the film, Fox felt that it was not "scary enough" and wanted The New Mutants to stand out tonally in a similar vein to Deadpool and Logan. As a result, it was reported that 50% of the film is undergoing reshoots, and one or two characters are being added in major roles than just cameos. Additionally, Josh Boone is said to be having creative differences with Fox over the reshoots. [42] Josh Boone has stated that his original cut of the film would be released in theaters, as the planned reshoots never occurred. He also announced that a new trailer would be arriving on January 6, 2020. OMG YESSS! ??. Rumors of The New Mutants ’ death have been greatly exaggerated. The teen-centric X-Men spinoff first went into production all the way back in July 2017, and since that time there have been rumors that the tone was changed, that 20th Century Fox wanted significant reshoots, that A-list cameos were going to be added in post-production, and eventually that the movie wouldn’t even hit theaters at all and would instead be released on Hulu. As it turns out, none of that was true. Or at least none of that turned out to be true. The New Mutants was indeed in a place of limbo for about a year when Disney was in the process of purchasing Fox and the film’s release date had been continually bumped back. After all, The New Mutants was originally conceived as the next step in a series of X-Men movies meant to build out Fox’s own Marvel universe, and now Disney had to figure out how/if New Mutants fit into its existing Marvel Cinematic Universe (you know, the one with The Avengers). Image via 20th Century Studios Well The New Mutants is now officially completed and hitting theaters (finally) on April 3rd, and no, those reshoots never happened. Speaking with EW, director and co-writer Josh Boone explained why: “Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots. And I’ll tell you this: if there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups. We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older. ” Indeed, the rumor at the time was that Boone initially pitched The New Mutants as a horror movie but Fox instead asked him to shoot the film more like a PG-13 thriller, but then the studio was rumored to have changed its mind and wanted reshoots to then amp up the horror and potentially move towards an R-rating. That never ended up happening, and the film is now being released as PG-13 for “violent content, some disturbing/bloody images, some strong language, thematic elements and suggestive material. ” Boone says he heard nothing from Disney or Fox for about a year as the merger was being finalized, so he moved on to making The Stand miniseries for CBS All Access. Disney eventually called the filmmaker up and asked if he wanted to return and finish the film, and he enthusiastically returned to finish up a cut that was already nearly complete: “In the editing, we were probably 75 percent done, ” Boone explains. “We came back and finished it up. It took a couple months, and it was nice to be able to come back. Knate [Lee], my co-writer, and I, we hadn’t seen it in a year. We did a bunch of things here and there that we hadn’t thought about or noticed a year before. ” It’s a unique situation for a unique film, returning to an unfinished cut you haven’t worked on in a year, but it’s nice that Boone was able to see this thing through to the finish line. Maisie Williams ?who has seen the finished film?says it’s exactly the movie they set out to make, and Boone has given this version his stamp of approval. Whether The New Mutants will begin a new franchise under Disney/Marvel Studios’ purview or if the film will be essentially “burned off” like last year’s Dark Phoenix is unclear, but at the very least we’ll be seeing a vision that was overseen by the film’s architect from beginning to end.
