Sidious sensed the anger within Luke and was tempting him to give in and strike. Luke was trying hard not to give in to his anger despite the Emperor's goading. Luke knows Palpatine wins if he secumbs to the temptation of the dark side. He also has a sick and twisted sense of humor and enjoys causing pain with a smile. Anakin/Vader was damaged goods after getting severley burnt at Mustafar. Sidious was highly dissapointed and could have left him to die on Mustafar but he knew that finding someone with even half of the tremendous Force potential Vader once had, would take time and so he had no choice but to fix up Vader and use him for the meantime until he could replace Vader with someone more powerful. Sidious would send assassins after Vader as tests to see if he was still useful and Vader beat them all. Vader was fully aware that Sidious was planning to bump him off for someone much better to take his spot but he didn't care as he was also plotting to overthrow him with Luke.
The Yongle Emperor (aka Chengzu or Yung Lo, r. 1403-1424 CE) was the third ruler of the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE). Inheriting a stable state thanks to the work of his father, the Hongwu Emperor (r. 1368-1398 CE), Yongle made lasting contributions to Chinese history such as moving the capital to Beijing and beginning construction of the Forbidden City as an imperial residence. The emperor also opened up China to the world, notably sponsoring the seven voyages of the explorer Zheng He. However, costly wars in both the south and north of China and the expense of his grandiose construction projects would leave Emperor Yongle’s successors with less cash than they needed to face the resurgent Mongols of the mid-15th century CE. Zhu Di Takes the Throne The founder of the Ming Dynasty was the Hongwu Emperor, and it was he, after 30 years of rule from 1368 CE, who sparked off a rumpus at the imperial court over who should be the next ruler. The problem was that although Hongwu had 26 sons, the carefully groomed heir, his first son Zhu Biao, had died prematurely in 1392 CE. Instead of choosing his own second eldest son, Hongwu decided on the eldest son of Zhu Biao. Indeed, this became the convention throughout the Ming dynasty - the eldest son of the Empress would inherit the throne, and if he died before this was possible, the right went to his eldest son. Thus, when Hongwu died in 1398 CE, he was succeeded by Zhu Yunwen (aka Huidi), who took the reign name of the Jianwen Emperor (r. 1398-1402 CE). Emperor Chengzu took the reign name Yongle Emperor, meaning ‘Eternal Contentment’. This jumping of a generation did not go down well with Hongwu’s second son, known as the Prince of Yan (and as Zhu Di, b. 1360 CE) who had high ambitions of his own. The prince commanded a large army, which had won many victories against the Mongols, and he was prepared to press his claim by force. After a three-year civil? war, the Prince of Yan was the victor, and he became Emperor Chengzu, taking the reign name Yongle Emperor, meaning ‘Eternal Contentment’ or 'Eternal Joy'. The Jianwen Emperor simply disappeared, perhaps killed during the war in a fire in the palace of Nanjing or, more intriguingly, he may have escaped the city disguised as a monk. Whatever his fate, nothing more was ever heard of the Ming Dynasty’s second emperor. Consolidating Power Just as ruthless as his father had been in eliminating any dissent in the state bureaucracy, Yongle started with a clean sweep of any official he thought loyal to his nephew Jianwen. In one infamous purge begun right after the new emperor took office, the noted Confucian scholar-official Fang Xiarou, who had refused to draft the proclamation of Yongle’s enthronement, was executed by dismemberment. Any of Xiarou’s known associates in the government were executed and so too all his relatives to the tenth degree. On top of all those victims, the emperor ordered the execution of all the officials who had passed their civil service examinations while Xiarou had been their overseer. The death toll ran into the thousands.? Ming Dynasty Empire, c. 1409 CE by SY (CC BY-SA) Despite the huge number of officials who were removed from office by the emperor’s purge, the state bureaucracy was expanded; eunuchs especially gained power and influence because, unable to have children, their loyalty was considered more certain than other officials. Indeed, in 1420 CE, the emperor established a sort of secret service headed by his chief eunuch. This service, called the Eastern Depot, was set the task of rooting out any lingering opposition to Yongle’s legitimacy to rule and eliminate corruption. Another branch of the bureaucracy, the state archives and repository of official histories, was given the task of all but blanking out Jianwen’s reign and falsifying records to show that Yongle had the legitimate claim to the throne. ? ? ? Beijing & The Forbidden City In the early 15th century CE the Mongols experienced a resurgence on China’s borders and so Emperor Yongle moved the capital from Nanjing to Beijing in 1421 CE to be better placed to deal with any foreign threat. The site had a history as an ancient capital under various regimes, and it was also in the province that the emperor had personally commanded when he had been the Prince of Yan. At huge expense, Beijing was enlarged and surrounded by a 10-metre high circuit? wall ?measuring some 15 kilometres in total length. Accessed by nine gates, the city was laid out on a regular grid plan. Such was Beijing’s need for food, the Grand Canal was deepened and widened so that grain ships could easily reach the capital. No fewer than 24 emperors would reside in the Forbidden City in Beijing.? One of the lasting contributions to Chinese history made by Yongle was the building of the Forbidden City in the heart of Beijing, built as the imperial residence. Known in Chinese as Zijincheng (‘Purple Forbidden City’), construction was begun in 1407 CE, and thousands of labourers spent the next 14 years creating one of the greatest cities in the world. The buildings, set upon white stone slabs, were made of painted red wood and yellow glazed ceramic roof tiles and surrounded by a high wall. Besides functional buildings, there were huge open squares, pavilions, ornamental gardens, canals, bridges, and pagodas. The whole ensemble was designed to leave a visitor in no doubt of the power of the ruler who could build such a complex. Used also by the emperors of the Qing dynasty, the Forbidden City was continuously extended and restored until reaching its present impressive spread of some 7. 2 square kilometres. The buildings and their thousands of rooms are all carefully laid out in a plan which reflects the traditional Chinese view of the world. At the heart of the complex, on the most elevated site, is the Hall of Supreme Harmony, where imperial receptions were held. Other halls spread outwards from this central point, all built along a north-south axis. The emperor himself and all male attendants lived in buildings on the eastern side while women lived on the western side of the complex. The Forbidden City also included government offices, all arranged strictly according to the rank of officials. Needless to say, the forbidden aspect derives from the controlled access to it, with only officials of certain ranks and invited ambassadors being permitted within its walls. Today the complex contains the largest collection of imperial treasures and artworks in China. ? ? ? Zheng He & the End of Isolationism The Yongle Emperor did not wait long before he embarked on a much more aggressive foreign policy than his predecessors and end the isolationism begun by his father. In 1406 CE he sent an army to invade a then-independent Vietnam. The campaign was successful, although the country would regain its independence 20 years later. There would also be several campaigns against the Mongols to ensure China’s northern borders were respected, but the enemy’s tactics of retreating on horseback whenever threatened meant that nothing was ever really achieved in the expensive campaigns. The least successful military operation was the attempt to annex Annam on the south-west border of Ming China which resulted in a two-decade military stalemate that once again drained imperial resources. A more peaceful and successful strategy of Emperor Yongle to foster new international relations was his use of diplomatic missions. Ambassadors were sent to Herat and Samarkand in central Asia, as well as to Manchuria, Tibet, and Korea, all with some success. The most famous of these missions, though, was the adventures of Zheng He (1371-1433 CE), widely regarded as China’s greatest ever explorer. Born in Yunnan in southern China, Zheng was a eunuch Muslim who rose to become an admiral in the imperial fleet. The Yongle Emperor sent Zheng on seven diplomatic voyages between 1405 and 1433 CE, with each voyage involving several hundred ships. Zheng sailed along established routes to the coast of? India, the Persian Gulf, and the east coast of? Africa, but many of his final destinations were new points of contact for the Chinese. Giraffe Tribute to Emperor Yongle by Shen Du (Public Domain) The intention was that the voyages of Zheng He, giving out lavish gifts like silk and fine Ming porcelain as well as letters of friendship from the emperor, would encourage East Asia back into the sphere of the Chinese tribute system and extend that system to new states as remote as East Africa. The tribute system, rather than a means for China to acquire free goods, was really only?a gratification of the Chinese belief that they were the centre of the world and their ruler was the Son of Heaven. The presence of foreign ambassadors in the Forbidden City would also help Yongle legitimise his own position as emperor, taken as it had been by force from his own nephew. Indeed, some scholars have suggested that part of Zheng He’s mission was to find out if the Jianwen Emperor really was in hiding somewhere in Southeast Asia and plotting a comeback. Ultimately, the voyages of Zheng He only managed to woo East Asian rulers to consistently pay tribute, but Zheng certainly brought back plenty of knowledge of foreign lands and customs, and he did ship back such exotica as giraffes, gems, and spices. The voyages were extremely costly, though, and Yongle’s successors would abandon the idea, at least in terms of those lands across the Indian Ocean. Emperor Palpatine / Darth Sidious The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural, and Sheev Palpatine is arguably the most infamous follower of these Sith doctrines. Scheming, powerful, and evil to the core, Darth Sidious restored the Sith and destroyed the Jedi Order. Living a double life, Sidious was in fact Palpatine, a Naboo Senator and phantom menace. He slowly manipulated the political system of the Galactic Republic until he was named Supreme Chancellor -- and eventually Emperor -- ruling the galaxy through fear and tyranny. Long thought killed at the Battle of Endor, a transmission intercepted during the time of the First Order suggests that Palpatine has returned. " Part of Queen Amidala ’s inner circle, Senator Palpatine of Naboo seemed an honest and trustworthy servant of the people. In reality, he was Darth Sidious, power-hungry Sith Lord. He began his play for control of the galaxy by orchestrating the invasion of Naboo, while at the same time positioning himself to be voted Supreme Chancellor in a special election. Though the invasion failed and his apprentice, Darth Maul, was seemingly killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi, the wheels for his grand scheme were in motion -- and the emergence of the gifted Anakin Skywalker presented him with a new opportunity. As a Separatist movement began to grow to the seeming consternation of Palpatine, it was in fact, the next phase of Darth Sidious’ plan: he was pulling the strings of the secessionists, while at the same time, demanding emergency powers as Supreme Chancellor to combat the threat of civil war. With the help of his new apprentice, former Jedi Count Dooku, he was able to play both sides effortlessly. When the Clone Wars began on Geonosis between the Republic ’s new clone army and the droids of the Separatists -- with the Jedi caught in the middle -- Sidious was pleased, and victory was in sight. Meanwhile, he continued mentoring Anakin Skywalker, instilling a dangerous ambitious side into the young Jedi. While the Clone Wars continued, Darth Sidious was presented with an unforeseen challenge: the return of his former apprentice, Darth Maul. Maul had, in fact, survived his injuries suffered at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and was now amassing power. Sidious dealt with him and his brother, Savage Opress, personally, killing Opress and taking Maul captive. Three years into the Clone Wars, Sidious made his final move: converting the heroic Jedi, Anakin Skywalker, to the dark side as Darth Vader, and casting the Jedi as enemies of the state. The Sith Lord issued Order 66, which commanded the eradication of all Jedi and would leave him unopposed for galactic domination. With public support, he reorganized the Republic into the first Galactic Empire and named himself Emperor. Jedi Master Yoda made one last attempt to destroy Sidious and restore freedom, but he proved unsuccessful; Sidious, with Darth Vader at his side, ruled the galaxy. THE DARK TIMES After the Lothal Jedi Temple came under the control of the Empire, an ancient painting of the Mortis gods was uncovered on its facade. The Emperor believed it was a gateway to a world between worlds -- a place where time and space could be manipulated. He was obsessed with unlocking the portal, but proved unsuccessful. The Padawan learner, Ezra Bridger, however, figured out the painting's secrets and entered the mystical plain within. Through dark arts, Palpatine could peer into the world between worlds, but failed to capture Bridger or the friend he saved there, Ahsoka Tano. Bridger escaped and sealed the portal, handing the Emperor a great defeat. GALACTIC CIVIL WAR Darth Sidious remained relatively unchallenged as Emperor -- until the formation of the Rebel Alliance. He suffered his first major defeat with the Rebellion’s destruction of the Death Star, but took special notice of one Rebel in particular. Strong with the dark side, Sidious felt a disturbance in the Force as Luke Skywalker ’s Jedi powers developed. He knew the boy had destroyed his space station, and foresaw that Luke could destroy him. Sidious planned for Skywalker’s killing, but Vader suggested the young Jedi be converted to the dark side -- an idea that intrigued the Emperor. The Empire had begun construction of a new Death Star, and the Emperor made a rare visit from Coruscant to oversee its completion. There, he laid a trap for the Rebels and Luke Skywalker; while the Death Star looked unfinished, it was actually fully operational. When Luke willingly arrived, seeking to turn Darth Vader, his father, to the light side of the Force, he was brought before Sidious. Sidious toyed with him, encouraging the Jedi to use his hatred and strike him down. Luke gave in, leading to a duel with Vader that saw him nearly kill his father in anger -- which is what Sidious wanted, so that Luke would take his father’s place as his apprentice. When the young Jedi came to his senses, he threw away his lightsaber, refusing to turn to the dark side. Sidious had not foreseen this, and could not comprehend Luke’s compassion for Vader. The Sith Lord angrily shot Force lightning into Luke, intending to destroy him. Vader regrouped, and upon seeing the true evil that was Sidious, threw his Master down a deep shaft. At long last, the Emperor was dead, taking a nightmarish era of tyranny with him.

Though He is no longer responsive to external stimuli, the Emperor still lies at the very heart of the Imperium's continued existence. Although He cannot be directly involved in the day-to-day running of humanity's galactic government, His existence on the Golden Throne is vital to sustaining the Imperium, since His powerful mind's presence in the Immaterium maintains and directs the Astronomican, the psychic beacon that makes possible faster-than-light Warp travel and is vital to Imperial shipping, transportation, commerce and communication. He is said to still guide His race through the psychically-reactive divination tool known as the Emperor's Tarot, which select psykers can consult to gain a glimpse of the future and the Emperor's will. He is also said to constantly battle the Chaos Gods in the Warp and prevent their further intrusion upon the material universe. His mind must remain vigilant at all times throughout the entire Imperium to safeguard the human race and to offer His protection to the faithful. Above all else, it is Mankind's collective belief in the Emperor's divinity that serves as its greatest protection from Chaos and the other hideous dangers that plague the galaxy. History Origins Note: This section discusses material that was once considered canon but whose canonicity may now be questionable. The Emperor and his most trusted advisor, Malcador the Sigillite The Emperor is the collective reincarnation of all the shamans of Neolithic humanity's various peoples, the first human psykers. The foul Warp entities that would become the four Great Powers of Chaos had not yet fully formed when the Emperor was born on Earth during prehistoric times, somewhere in ancient central Anatolia (modern Turkey) in the 8 th Millennium B. C. But even before the birth of the Emperor, as humanity grew and progressed, the Warp began to become increasingly disturbed by the dark undercurrents of humanity's collective psyche, and the shamans began to lose their former ability to reincarnate into new bodies. Instead, upon dying, their souls were consumed by the entities and daemons of the Warp. Eventually the shamans of humanity, unable to reincarnate, would become extinct, and without the shamans and their psychic abilities to guide the race, humanity would inevitably fall prey to the corruptions of Chaos, just as eventually happened to the Eldar. In these ancient days, all the shamans of Earth gathered in a grand conclave to decide what must be done to stave off the day when they had all been consumed by the Warp. In the end, the shamans decided to pool their collective psychic energies by reincarnating as a single soul in a single human body to create an individual they called "the New Man. " The thousands of shamans, as one, took poison, and as one, they died, their souls flowing into the Immaterium in a rush of psychic power that overwhelmed those daemons who sought to feast upon it with a cleansing, purifying fire, a flame imperishable that became one soul out of many. A standard year later the child who would become the Emperor was born in a Neolithic settlement of Anatolian herders and farmers of a normal mother and father, with normal brothers and sisters. His psychic power was so great that its energies altered His genome and physiology in the womb and rendered Him immortal so He would no longer need to reincarnate and could not be assaulted by the daemonic creatures of the Immaterium upon His death. As He grew older, His potent psychic powers began to manifest. For thirty-eight thousand Terran years, He wandered over the Earth and throughout human history. He travelled among the different peoples of Mankind. While He had first been only an observer of Mankind's triumphs and follies, He soon began to help where He could, using His ancient wisdom to spread efficient government, crop management, animal husbandry, technology and peace. He used His influence carefully, at first adopting only the guise of a normal man, and without revealing His true nature. As the millennia passed, the man who would become the Emperor watched the human race develop. He travelled the entire globe, watching and helping, sometimes adopting the persona of a great leader or advisor. In times of trouble He became a crusader, a religious leader or even a messiah, at other times He remained a back-stage contributor to events, an advisor to kings, a court magician, a pioneering scientist. Many of the guises He adopted were humble, others became monumental figures of world history or religion. At times of crisis He would be there, steering the human race along a narrow path to survival that only He could see. As the human race prospered the Warp became increasingly disturbed. The man who would become the Emperor was aware of how the extreme sides of the human character were feeding the nascent Chaos Powers. Despite His best efforts to promote peace and harmony across Old Earth, the instinctive values of martial honour, ambition, defiance, and self-satisfaction could never be eradicated from the human character. Some of the New Man's plans proved less than successful; seeds of wisdom often failed to flourish or grew into uncontrollable monstrosities leading to eras of persecution and war. The Chaos Powers sensed the presence of the New Man, the "Anathema" as they would name him, and His efforts to curb their own power and growth. Even before they became fully conscious in the Immaterium the Ruinous Powers recognised the man who would become the Emperor as their greatest enemy. Khorne was the first of the four major Chaos Gods to wake fully, and an era of wars and conflict soon raged across the globe to herald his birth. Tzeentch was the next, and nations and politics soon grew to maturity with all of their implicit intrigues and double-dealings. Nurgle was the third to awake and plagues swept across Old Earth's continents claiming many souls for the Lord of Decay. By the end of the European Middle Ages on Terra, all three of these Chaos Gods had awoken to full consciousness. The fourth, Slaanesh, still slumbered, to be awakened by the follies of a different species, the Aeldari. But as the New Man's psychic powers further developed, He became ever more aware of the terrible dangers that awaited Mankind in the broader universe and He resolved to do all in His power to defend and guide humanity towards a future as the predominant species in the galaxy. As more and more humans were born with the mutant psyker genes that granted them the ability to wield the potent power of the Immaterium in the last centuries of the Dark Age of Technology, and humanity suffered from the deadly effects of uncontrolled psykers that heralded the onset of the Age of Strife, the Emperor realised that He would have to take a more direct and open role in human affairs than ever before. Following the birth of Slaanesh after the Fall of the Eldar in the 30th Millennium, and the end of the Warp Storms that had prevented interstellar communications and travel from the Sol System, the Emperor determined that the time had come to directly steer the history of Mankind once more, or see the human race ultimately go extinct.
