Whatever the case, as much as I have enjoyed these new Star Wars films, each of them has had a number of issues that could have been avoided. Here are my biggest problems with The Rise Of Skywalker. 1. The Movie Was Too Rushed I¡Çve written about this problem previously, but it bears repeating. Probably my number one problem with The Rise Of Skywalker was just how rushed it felt, especially in the first act. The pacing is so frenetic that when you think Chewie (Joonas Suotamo) is dead, you barely have time to process it. d. I¡Çve written at great length about this, so I won¡Çt go into more detail here. Suffice to say, if they had made Episode IX all about discovering that Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) was back and revealing Rey¡Çs true parentage, and then Episode X was about the Resistance finally taking down the Emperor once and for all, it would have had a lot more room to breathe. And it needed that room very badly. One of the great things about the original trilogy that pretty much every new Star Wars movie (including Rogue One) has failed at, is taking time to establish place. We haven¡Çt gotten long, extended scenes like the Jabba the Hutt sequence on Tatooine or the opening of Empire Strikes Back on Hoth. The end of Rise of Skywalker on Exogol gives us precious little time getting to know that planet compared to the final act of Return of the Jedi on Endor. Instead, we¡Çre rushed off to some new escapade and another brief stop at a planet we can barely remember afterward. We rarely return to revisit these locations, either, unlike the original trilogy which returns to both Degoba and Tatooine. If they would just limit each movie to three locations/planets we¡Çd be in much better shape. That¡Çs certainly true with Rise Of Skywalker which hops from planet to planet with reckless abandon. Even a longer movie might have worked as a second-best solution, but whatever the case Rey (Daisy Ridely) Finn (John Boyega) Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) all could have used more time to grow as characters. 2. Rose Tico Was Absolutely Sidelined Rose Tico got the shaft I don¡Çt care what the reasons are for Rose Tico¡Çs unbelievably brief screen-time. There¡Çs really no excuse. And I say this as someone who was never really all that into Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) to begin with. She¡Çs a fine character but nothing special and I¡Çm still a little surprised that she was given that much screen-time in The Last Jedi to begin with when we should have had the core cast spending more time together instead? one of its most egregious errors. But we have to deal with the hand we¡Çre dealt, and in this case Rose was an established character with a major role and an important relationship with Finn. She should have been with Finn and Poe and Rey when they went out to find the Sith wayfinder. Full stop. Rose should have been there, even if she ended up staying on the ship for some scenes to hold down the fort. Yes, there¡Çs the whole ¡ÈShe was supposed to be with Leia but the CGI was troublesome¡É argument, but I think that¡Çs pretty flimsy. Why have Rose with Leia when the previous film established her and Finn as friends? Besides, there were plenty of other ¡Èanchor¡É characters to keep Leia company at base. Rise Of Skywalker does the same thing The Last Jedi does in introducing new characters for no apparent reason. I have no problem with Finn¡Çs new pal Jannah (Naomi Ackie) or Poe¡Çs old fling Zorii Bliss (Keri Russell) but both these brand new characters have better lines, more lines and more interesting roles than Rose. So maybe it wasn¡Çt intentional, but it sure seems like a slap in the face. Instead of sidelining Rose, maybe Abrams could have given her a more interesting part to play. Her and Finn¡Çs friendship could certainly have been explored in greater depth (especially if we had two movies! ) 3. Too Many Last Jedi About-Faces Snoke and Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi I think a fair critique of The Last Jedi is that it takes too much of The Force Awakens and turns it on its head. It¡Çs an interesting storytelling method?to take tropes and expectations and subvert them completely. On some levels, The Last Jedi did this quite well. For instance, Luke Skywalker had a brilliant arc in The Last Jedi. The only problem was the fact that we didn¡Çt get to see Luke for so many decades that when we finally found him and he was bitter, living in self-exile, cut off from the Force, it was almost too much to accept. But by the end of the film, he saves the day, and by the time Rise of Skywalker comes along, he¡Çs back to his former self. That, I think, felt very natural and right. It was a logical, powerful continuity between the two films. But elsewhere, both films try to backpedal too much on their predecessors, to the point where it almost doesn¡Çt feel like a trilogy at all. Clearly Rey was set up as important and her character was meant to have important parents, even if Abrams hadn¡Çt figured out who they were just yet. I didn¡Çt mind that Johnson tossed this any more than I minded Luke tossing the lightsaber (and later catching it in Rise). But it would be nice if there was some cooperation at play between storytellers and directors here. At the very least, if we¡Çd been left doubting Kylo Ren at the end of The Last Jedi, or had some other hints pointing at a possible Palpatine link, then when we learn that in Rise it wouldn¡Çt have felt like a ¡Èfix. ¡É And I would have been perfectly okay if Rey had actually been a ¡Ènobody¡É and Palpatine still wanted to use her as a potential vessel. She didn¡Çt need to be his granddaughter for this to work, and in some ways her being his granddaughter makes it a more unwieldy plot point. For instance, why didn¡Çt her parents take her to somewhere safe like the New Republic or Luke Skywalker and instead sold her off into slavery? And why didn¡Çt the bounty hunter who took them notice the little girl watching his ship fly off? This kind of thing, coupled with Rose Tico¡Çs diminished role, the line about the ¡ÈHoldo Maneuver¡É being ¡Èone in a million¡É and the myriad other ways Rise of Skywalker seems to undermine The Last Jedi (in similar fashion to how The Last Jedi undermined The Force Awakens) makes the whole trilogy feel incoherent. (Update: A reader pointed out that he thinks the Holdo ¡Èone in a million¡É line is actually an homage to Holdo¡Çs badassery in The Last Jedi, which I can see). As my colleague Paul Tassi points out, you can almost just skip The Last Jedi altogether at this point and nothing would really change. I think he¡Çs exaggerating a bit. You still need all the Luke / Rey / Kylo stuff including the final battle, but you could (and maybe should) just skip past the space chase and the casino planet. It seems to me that coming up with a better game-plan for the second and third installments, so that at the very least they seemed to work together, would have been a smart move for Disney and LucasFilm. In an ideal world, the twists between each film would have felt natural and earned?instead we¡Çre left with narrative whiplash. 4. Missed Opportunities Rey, Finn and Poe I don¡Çt usually ¡Èship¡É couples in shows and movies, and I honestly don¡Çt have a dog in this fight, but Finn and Poe could have been a romantic couple and it would have worked pretty well. It would have been a lot bolder than one same-sex kiss at the end of the movie. But even if the film didn¡Çt spell it out explicitly, it would have been better to leave the door open to at least the possibility. It seems like Rise of Skywalker goes out of its way to tell us ¡ÈPoe Dameron is heterosexual and he will never be a romance option for Finn¡É which is weird. Maybe less weird if we¡Çd met Poe¡Çs former squeeze a movie or two ago instead of last minute after all the fan shipping. But even more than just a romance between these two, I feel like the new trilogy really dropped the ball just establishing a deep friendship?and not just between Poe and Finn, but also between those two and Rey. They embrace at the end of the film, but especially Rey and Poe never really had much of a chance to bond, and the friendship between Rey and Finn kind of fell away during The Last Jedi. They meet at the end of Episode VIII and are bickering by the start of Episode IX and then there¡Çs just not much else. Lots of missed opportunities over the course of this entire trilogy. I think Abrams did a pretty good job trying to course correct, but it was too little too late. 5. Finn Never Tells Rey What He Wants To Tell Her Finn and Jannah At one point, as they sink into quicksand on a desert planet, thinking that it¡Çs his last time seeing Rey, Finn calls out ¡ÈRey, I never told you... ¡É and then disappears into the earth. But that¡Çs fine, since it¡Çs going to be a few years before we have another ¡ÈStar Wars¡É movie to fight about, so we can pace ourselves with the ¡ÈRise of Skywalker¡É discourse for a while. And to help you with that, we¡Çve got here a list of the most ridiculous parts of the last film in the absolutely mad new trilogy that you can bring up when you wanna start a fight. But remember to keep the fight online ? social distancing is still the order of business here. So here you go. Below we¡Çve got 23 big gripes about ¡ÈThe Rise of Skywalker. ¡É It¡Çs not an exhaustive list ? such a thing would require me to write a book ? but we can only think about this movie for so long before we go crazy, so this will have to do for now. 1. One thousand (or more) Death Stars Late in the movie it¡Çs revealed that this massive fleet of Star Destroyers that Emperor Palpatine pulled out of the ice on Exegol at the beginning of the movie was equipped with Death Star lasers. The reveal is made when one of them blows up a planet for no particular reason. The Resistance folks then briefly huddle up and decide that probably all those ships can do that. That seems like an illogical conclusion to draw, because that would mean the bad guys have an entire fleet of Death Stars, which would be easily the most ludicrous thing that has ever happened in a ¡ÈStar Wars¡É movie. But since the issue is never mentioned again we aren¡Çt sure what other conclusion we could come to. The Rebel fleet from nowhere To challenge all those Death Stars, the Resistance launches an attack on Exegol with only a Corellian Corvette and like one single fighter squadron and one carrier ship full of troops. Fortunately for them, Lando spent a couple hours flying around the galaxy and casually assembling the biggest fleet we¡Çve ever seen in any of these movies. That¡Çs absolutely crazy. Lando was not even gone that long. 3. The Emperor returns before the movie starts There¡Çs a lot of creative decisions on this movie I can¡Çt even begin to understand, and the most confusing of those is the decision to have Emperor Palpatine make his big return to the galactic stage between movies. How do you bring back a dead character and not even let us see characters reacting to that revelation as it happens? This one actually makes me mad. If you¡Çre gonna cram a whole trilogy of stories in one movie, you still have to start at the beginning. 4. Rey is the Emperor¡Çs granddaughter The climax of the ¡ÈSkywalker Saga¡É was about two Palpatine family members fighting each other. Incredible. Also Read: Nothing About Emperor Palpatine's Return in 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' Makes Sense 5. Luke and Leia knew about Rey¡Çs lineage the whole time This is just a confusing bit. When did they learn this important fact? Why had they never done anything with that tidbit of key info? There¡Çs a lot of weird ramifications to their possession of this knowledge, and ¡ÈThe Rise of Skywalker¡É has no interest in exploring any of them. 6. Leia died for no reason They decided to kill off Leia in the strangest and low-key way: by calling out through the Force. It took Luke physically projecting himself across the galaxy and doing a lightsaber fight before the effort killed him. How weak are we supposed to think Leia is? 7. The Knights of Ren Late in the film, Ben Solo/Kylo Ren is forced to fight his former bros the Knights of Ren in order to earn his redemption. It¡Çs a powerful scene, the culmination of a character arc stretching back three films¡Ä is what we¡Çd say if the Knights had like, any role before ¡ÈThe Rise of Skywalker. ¡É They¡Çre in this trilogy for less than 5 minutes, none of them speaks or has any personality, and they don¡Çt even use lightsabers. They basically existed only so we¡Çd know the origin of Kylo Ren¡Çs dorky last name, and when we finally saw them up close, it turns out they dress like the corniest nu metal band of 1996. PASS. 8. The Resurrection So Rey kills Palpatine, and then dies. Kylo Ren climbs out of the hole he fell into, and somehow uses the Force to revive her corpse. They can just resurrect people now! OK! 9. The Kiss So Rey is alive again, and the first thing she does is make out with Kylo Ren. They haven¡Çt had an ounce of romantic chemistry in these movies, but some ¡ÈStar Wars¡É nerds shipped them so I guess they had to do it. Also Read: Whose Voices Were Those at the End of 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker'? 10. The Death Immediately after this kiss, Ben rolls over and dies, apparently having given all of his life force to Rey to bring her back to life in what was supposed to be the film¡Çs most dramatic and emotionally poignant scene. At that precise moment in our screening, the entire theater burst into hysterical laughter. Whoops. 11. The Force can do literally anything All wounds are trivial now because Force users can easily heal them. If they¡Çre too late and the person died, they can just bring them back from the dead. Need to ship a package? Just use the Force to teleport it! Wanna have a lightsaber duel with somebody a hundred miles away? The Force has online multiplayer. Rey is just a God now, the most powerful being who ever lived. But Leia died from yelling. 12. Chewie died but actually he didn¡Çt This whole sequence is strange. Chewie gets captured by the First Order when he¡Çs like 30 yards from the rest of our heroes. Then Rey accidentally blows up the ship they were taking him away on. Except actually Chewie was on a different but identical ship because ¡ÈThe Rise of Skywalker¡É wanted to pull a stupidly manipulative misdirect. C-3PO got his memory wiped but then got it back So our heroes need to read something in the Sith language, which it turns out 3PO can read. Unfortunately, his programming forbids him from translating it. (Who did this? Doesn¡Çt matter. It just is. ) This forces them to reboot 3PO to override that programming, which will erase his memory and effectively kill him as he¡Çs been known. It sounds sad, and 3PO even gets an emotional farewell out of it. Then the film pulls a movie length JK because not only is it played for laughs from there out, at the end 3PO gets his memories restored thanks to a backup on R2D2¡Çs hard drive. 14. Poe has Han Solo¡Çs backstory now One of the 57 new planets we visit in ¡ÈThe Rise of Skywalker¡É is Kijimi, where we meet Poe¡Çs ex-girlfriend, who reveals that Poe was a spice runner before becoming a Resistance fighter. Because for some reason they needed a new Han I guess. 15. General Hux Speaking of criminally underdeveloped characters, Hux is revealed to be a mole within the First Order, feeding information to the R esistance, uh Rebellion two movies after his Reichstag speech on Starkiller base, because he hates Kylo Ren more than he loves the First Order. And then, literally the next scene after we learn this, he¡Çs unceremoniously killed by his commanding officer who announces ¡Èwe found the mole. ¡É Hux joins Boba Fett and Captain Phasma in the pantheon of Star Wars bad guys whose deaths are as pointless as, it turns out, the characters themselves were. At least he got more lines than Rose Tico. 16. The Force told those stormtroopers to rebel Finn meets a woman name Jannah, who was also a former First Order stormtrooper who had been stolen from her parents when she was a kid and then rebelled as an adult. And they have this fun moment where they talk about how they decided to rebel because they had this weird feeling that they should. And they decide that feeling was the Force. Not, you know, their conscience. Or guilt about helping out a fascist government. They¡Çd have happily done state-sponsored murder had the Force not pinged them, I guess. 17. Ghost Luke So Luke died, and is a ghost. But he can still pick up physical objects with his non-physical hand. And he can use the Force to lift his X-Wing out of the ocean. Sounds like being dead is all upside. 18. Pretending Rose wasn¡Çt a main character Congratulations racist, sexist harassers: Your complaints were heard. 19. Maz Kanata They got the amazing Lupita Nyong¡Ço to play maybe the most pointless character in this whole trilogy. The only thing of note she does in this movie is give Chewbacca a medal in an egregiously annoying bit of fan service. 20. Chewbacca gets a medal I¡Çm not sure how Maz giving Chewie a medal for no reason whatsoever is supposed to make up for his snub in the original ¡ÈStar Wars¡É film. This bit feels so shameless. 21. The Resistance did not actually win the war So in the final battle of ¡ÈThe Rise of Skywalker, ¡É the Resistance manages to take out Emperor Palpatine¡Çs fleet, and one First Order Star Destroyer. So, uh, that means the rest of the First Order military is still out there. And the First Order military is apparently large enough that it conquered the entire galaxy in just a couple days. Which means that with the fleet of randoms that they assembled in this movie still, the Resistance still has a long road ahead it if it wants to liberate the galaxy.
