Una noche la cruel madrastra le sugirió al buen leñador que se encontraba atormentado pensando que sus hijos morirían de hambre. ? “Debemos abandonarlos en el bosque, ya no hay suficiente comida. A lo mejor se encuentran a alguien que se apiade y les dé de comer”. Al principio el padre se opuso rotundamente a la idea de abandonar a sus hijos a la merced del bosque. ? “¿Cómo se te puede ocurrir semejante idea mujer? ¿Qué clase de padre crees que soy? ” ? le respondió enfadado. La mujer que estaba dispuesta a deshacerse de la carga de los niños, no descansó hasta convencer al débil leñador de que aquella era la única alternativa que le quedaba. Los niños no estaban realmente dormidos, por lo que escucharon junto a la puerta de su habitación toda la conversación. Gretel lloraba desconsoladamente, pero Hansel la consoló asegurándole que tenía una idea para encontrar el camino de regreso. A la mañana siguiente cuando los niños se disponían a acompañar a su padre al bosque como hacían a menudo, la madrastra les dio un pedazo de pan a cada uno para el almuerzo. Así fue como los niños siguieron a su padre hasta la espesura al bosque, sabiendo que este los iba a dejar allí. Hansel iba detrás, dejando caer migas de su pan para marcar el camino por el que debían regresar a la casa. Cuando llegaron a un claro, el padre les dijo con una tristeza profunda. ? “Esperen aquí hijos míos, iré a cortar algo de leña y luego vendré a buscarlos”. Hansel y Gretel se quedaron tranquilos como su padre les había pedido, creyendo que tal vez había cambiado de opinión. Pero por más que buscaron y buscaron no lograron encontrar las migas de pan que indicaban el camino, ya que antes los pájaros del bosque se las habían comido. Así vagaron sin rumbo durante la noche y el día siguiente por el bosque, y con cada paso que daban se alejaban más de la cabaña donde vivían. Pensaban que iban a morir de hambre cuando encontraron a un pajarillo blanco que cantaba y movía sus alas, como invitándoles a seguirle. Siguieron el vuelo de aquel pajarillo hasta que llegaron a una casita, que para su sorpresa estaba construida completamente de dulces. El tejado, las ventanas e incluso las paredes estaban recubiertas de jengibre, chocolate, bizcochos y azúcar. De inmediato se abalanzaron hacia la casita y mientras mordisqueaban todo lo que podían, oyeron la voz de una viejecita desde el interior que los invitaba a pasar. Se trataba de una bruja malvada que usaba aquel hechizo para atraer a los niños y luego comérselos. Una vez adentro fue muy tarde para Hansel y Gretel, quienes no lograron escapar. La bruja decidió que Gretel le era más útil en las labores domésticas y a Hansel se lo comería luego de engordarlo, porque estaba muy delgado. Lo metió en una jaula donde lo alimentaba a diario y como estaba media ciega, cuando le pedía que le sacase la mano para ver si había engordado algo, Hansel la engañaba con un hueso. Pasó el tiempo y la bruja finalmente se aburrió, por lo que decidió comérselo así mismo. Le ordenó a Gretel que prepara el horno para cocinarlo. Mientras la bruja estaba distraída viendo si el horno estaba lo suficientemente caliente, Gretel aprovechó la oportunidad para empujarla a su interior. Gretel corrió y liberó a su hermano, pero antes de marcharse tomaron las joyas y diamantes que mantenía escondidos la bruja. Huyeron del bosque tan lejos como pudieron, hasta que llegaron a la orilla de un inmenso lago en el que nadaba un bello cisne blanco. Le pidieron ayuda al cisne que los ayudó a cruzar hasta la otra orilla, indicándoles el camino de regreso a su casa. Con inmensa alegría los niños encontraron a su padre, que no había pasado un día sin que se arrepintiera de lo que les había hecho a sus adorados hijos. Les contó que los había buscado por todo el bosque sin cesar y que la madrastra había muerto. Les prometió que en lo adelante se esforzaría por ser un mejor padre y hacerlos feliz. Los niños dejaron caer los tesoros de la bruja a los pies de su padre y le dijeron que ya no tendrían que pasar más malos momentos. I thought the story was intriguing but mostly confusing and the acting and filming was mostly top notch but this one makes you use your brain to figure stuff out which was frustrating in some parts especially the ending. To me this is overrated and some people say it surpasses Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage but I think those two films are superior to this, not saying it's bad it's just not as good. Some parts in this film are visually amazing and it enthralls you from beginning to end but I was still a tad disappointed with the final result. Overall don't rent this thinking your going to see another korean horror movie because it is far from it but do rent it if you like fantasy, story and atmosphere driven dramas because this one is one of the more decent ones out there but be prepared to be patient for the slow build up. This is definitely the case with Hansel & Gretel, a film which if all you know is the title and you will find something very much the opposite of your expectations when you watched the film. This is not a story about two children being taken in by a witch, but the opposite. Being despite to believe by the title that you've heard this story before and now you are going to experience a total variation from the Asian horror film. The Koreans have succeed in their need to produce something new and not fall back into recent genre trends. This film is no different. You're not entirely sure of the film, until the second plot point, you're not sure of the victims, and not if there is going to be a happy ending. There is nothing in sight. This film is like a Korean version of Pan's Labyrinth, a story about children and their strange capacity to realize their dreams through imaginations. GREAT FILM.
