When i first saw FRIENDS on TV. i have no feelings at all... because at that time, i don't understand a word of English... so, i didn't understand what are so funny about them... then i went to university... learned English... One day i found a CD case of FRIENDS season 5 at movie store... i don't realize that i bought the CD case until i found it next to my laptop at the evening... then i watch it... it's funny... watch it again... hilarious... watch it again and again... amazing, I've never feel bored watching them... now that i saw all the season, i miss them so much... he he... hope that show never end... FRIENDS forever. Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, Joey... Love you guys...
Of course its bipartisan! Youre not telling us anything we don't already know. This show is certainly funny but it doesn't, as the viewer above indicated, portray my "friends. I love my friends and I love this show, but these people are TV people. Fine for it is not a realistic portrayal of life. I'm not complaining, just responding to a previous comment.
Here are some facts: 1) There is no way an unemployed singer (Phoebe) an unemployed fashion plate/waitress (Rachel) and a chef could live in a multi-bedroom apt. with a fabulous view in NYC. It would cost 6,000/month! Are you telling me that one person is paying for it all? 2) Across the hall, the rarely employed actor and the statistician are going to foot the rent on that place? Not. 3) Do you know a lot of people that carry their brother's child? And that have the same name as their mother? 4) If they are all vaguely employed (some more than others) how do they have time to constantly be sitting around, drinking coffee, listening to Phoebe sing, chilling at the girls' apt., etc. People work. I'm sure I have more, but I have to go do real things now. Anyway, my point is only that this is NOT a realistic picture of life in a major metropolitan U.S. city. It costs too much to have that much leisure time. Realism aside, I like the show, I watch it. It's great, etc. I'm not busting the show, just the statement that it, in any way, reflects reality.

After Rachel becomes a waitress at coffee house Central Perk, she and Monica become roommates at Monica's apartment located directly above Central Perk, and Rachel joins Monica's group of single people in their mid-20s: her previous roommate Phoebe Buffay, an eccentric, innocent masseuse; her neighbor across the hall Joey Tribbiani, a dim-witted yet loyal struggling actor and womanizer; Joey's roommate Chandler Bing, a sarcastic, self-deprecating IT manager; and her older brother and Chandler's college roommate Ross Geller, a sweet-natured but insecure paleontologist. Episodes depict the friends' comedic and romantic adventures and career issues, such as Joey auditioning for roles or Rachel seeking jobs in the fashion industry. Henry David Thoreau Im sure that at some point in every pet-lovers life, they wish their animal friend could verbalize their thoughts. Our furry companions seem so in tune with our moods and the world around them, but the barriers of biology and language prevent them from having even a simple chat with us. The beautiful thing about friendship is that it transcends language. A beloved pet doesnt need to articulate their thoughts with words for us to understand their affection. With a true friend ? be they human, canine, or something else entirely ? you can sit comfortably in silence and simply share space. Claire, my friend. Photo by Jen H. Her mom would shield them from sadness by stopping sad films but put out a skull every Christmas to remind them that people still die. Eaux my goodness, Eaux Claires The inaugural Eaux Claires Music Festival in Wisconsin this past weekend was one of my favorite music festivals I have ever been to. I went because of the absolutely ridiculous lineup, hand-curated by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Aaron Dessner (The National) and was floored by the community spirit, constant collaboration of musicians I love, and air of joy that permeated the festival. Entering under a rainbow of gossamer delight by “Minneapolis yarnbomber” HOTTEA: The first set of the festival for me was the freewheeling warmth and elasticity of Hiss Golden Messenger, whose redolent album Lateness of Dancers (out on Merge Records) Ive been listening to a lot all this spring and summer. I was dancing too hard to get any good photo or video, but they were tremendously good live, all their songs taking on new color and sounding somehow even better than on the album? especially when they were joined by the No BS! Brass Band, who delightfully showed up on stage and in the crowd at all the most wonderful times during the festival. It also made me so happy to see Justin Vernon standing sidestage for most of their set, singing along and thumping on his chest; thats one of the best feelings to see something youve booked and worked to make happen finally set off rolling: With an entirely new backing band from the folks that we hosted at my house and in the chapel, Chris Porterfields Field Report was the next on my schedule to see. After traversing the lush green forest path between stage areas (happily) I arrived to hear a completely reworked version of “I Am Not Waiting Anymore, ” a deep deep favorite of mine. Even re-envisioned as a faster, more rollicking alt-countrified tune, it still gets deep in my gut every time? the word structure, the evocation. The songs they played off Marigolden, the new record, were also incredible in the live setting. Chris writes songs that are so real and honest, in the lyrical content, in the potency of delivery. Theyre unflinching, and I like that. Okay, so ? new to me, because Ive been slow on the uptake lately: Sylvan Esso holy shit completely blew my hair back (not literally because it was ten thousand degrees + humid and my hair was a giant damp frizzball of drippy sweat, even moreso dancing under the tent for their set. Amelia Meath of Mountain Man (and also one of the busier guest performers of the festival, singing also with Hiss Golden Messenger and Phil Cook) and Nick Sanborn of Megafaun make rich, haunting, shimmery confections of eminently danceable music together. AND AMELIA MOVES LIKE THIS, while wearing (not pictured) 4-inch platform shoes and singing like a complete badass: I fell in love. I bought the full album immediately and am praying for enough hot summer lazy days left to listen to it on nonstop repeat. (also check out the super cool Song Exploder podcast about the roots and guts and words of this song, which made me like them even more) Friday nights set from The National was what I was looking forward to the most from this weekend. I hadnt seen them since that atom bomb of a performance at Red Rocks in 2013, and was feeling just about recovered enough to let them rip it all back open. They delivered a set that was even more tightly furious and darkly melodic than Id seen in a while from them. Matt seemed especially electrified, as he paced and screamed (and they performed both “Abel” and “Mr. November”. and then leapt into a crowd that I feared might actually consume him during “Terrible Love” (I confess to a hearty clasping of his arm when the eddy of the sweaty crowd shoved him into my orbit. Also, because of the massive group of friends assembled as co-performers on the bill of the weekend, the set contained some pretty incredible guests. YOU GUYS JUSTIN VERNON SANG ON “SLOW SHOW”: even though Matt had to publicly chastise him for wearing shorts; this is a classy band, man! Sufjan came out for several songs; here singing “Afraid of Everyone” with Matt: AND, as a kicker, there was a closing singalong to “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks” with both Sufjan Stevens and Justin Vernon. After severe weather sirens going off at 2:30am in the UW-Eau Claire dorms that this California girl had zero idea how to deal with (google. after surviving and not being washed away, Saturday morning crested crisp and full of the promise of another whole day of wonderful performances. The sound of Phil Cook wafting through the air made me stop my foraging for food and book it across the field immediately to begin dancing with a troupe of barely-clad college dudes (“vodka for breakfast, guys, amirite? ” ? my friend Michelle) for a wildly fun set that left me looking up all the music I could find from this talented gent. He also played with Hiss Golden Messenger, and is also in Megafaun. Its all a big circle of goodness, and I definitely intend to troll around in his catalog. The performance of this song at the festival was a beast: After having the honor of LNZNDRF (“Lanzendorf”) playing at my college in the spring with a special chapel rehearsal that I am working to bring you a glimpse of, I was really excited to see this experimental band play again. With core members Ben Lanz (The National, Sufjan Stevens, Beirut) and the Devendorf brothers (Scott and Bryan, from The National) they were joined this weekend by Josh Kaufman (a musician who plays with Yellowbirds and Josh Ritter) and trumpeter Kyle Resnick of The National. Together they created this otherworldy miasma of sounds that played off each other to build and dissipate under the little tent space where they played their surprise show. Watching their intuitive knowledge of each other as musicians is a joy, as they weave each performance together freshly ? with no traditional setlist of songs, just a scaffolding of new sound creations, insistent and expansive. PHOX premiered a spirited and imaginative short film at the fest, ostensibly about their mad dash to get to the festival in time in a zigzag across Wisconsin, punctuated by genies and dastardly lumberjacks, but really maybe about Monicas quest to find her voice and learning to not look inside a bottle (ahem. After a midnight screening on the lawn Friday, they repeated the showing immediately before their Saturday late afternoon set. Perhaps augmented by the film but also just by the fact that this band is fucking magical (and Ive crowed it since the first time I heard their dulcet earworm creations) they received one of the warmest and loudest home-state welcomes from the crowd of any band I saw all weekend. I was hoping theyd play “No Lion, ” the cover from the chapel session we recorded, but instead and even better, the culmination of their spirited set was a new a capella creation that was jawdropping. My heart swells for these kids. Everything about them just keeps getting better. Two other memorable punctuations of the weekend included a crowd singalong with Vermont songwriter Sam Amidon conducting us enthusiastically in traditional melodies ( listen) complete with sheet music, and Field Reports Chris Porterfield joining in as he walked by: …and a whimsical “Forever Love” matinee show with original compositions by Bryce and Aaron Dessner on a special woodland stage with elaborate set. This festival was crafted to be punctuated by little moments of delight and surprise. It made it feel so much fresher and more intimate, more honest. than a lot of other large festivals Ive gone to. Even though it had 22, 000 attendees, it felt closer in spirit to something like the Doe Bay Fest / Timber Music Fests of the Pacific Northwest that Ive had the joy of being a part of. I think thats really saying something about Justin and Aarons design for this happening. I had some strong ruminations during Bon Ivers closing set (pictured here with The Staves on backing vocals and S. Carey as one of two. drummers) As introduction, there was an exceedingly genuine, heart-swelling speech given before Bon Ivers set by festival narrator Michael Perry (a music writer from Eau Claire, and man who Justin later said was one of the most important friendships of his life. He said: “If you hold yourselves still and silent now, you can feel that river, runnin behind you, running through the night, running through all time. Its good to have music near a river. Theres this idea of baptism, of absolution, no matter what you believe. Better yet, its good to have music at a place where two rivers come together?a confluence. For what are we but a confluence? A confluence that lives and breathes, a confluence of dream and song, a confluence of 22, 000 beating hearts. And so here we are, cradled by a river in a sanctuary of song: craving consecration, exaltation. On bended knee, seeking benediction. ” With that, Justin launched seamlessly into the first live performance of his song “Heavenly Father, ” and closing vespers, so to speak, began. And it felt like benediction indeed. I kept thinking all weekend that I was glad to be in a crowd where there were blatant hearts on actual sleeves everywhere. I saw so many Justin Vernon words permanently inscribed in flesh. More than just a gathering of the converted, a festival of the fanboys and fangirls, I was surprised that I was pretty deeply moved at (for instance) the lanky, athletic-looking dude standing behind me in the breakfast line with “and i told you to be patient and i told you to be fine and i told you to be balanced and i told you to be kind” in a block of text over his heart. Weve heard that line a thousand times so as for it to become rote, but it wasnt rote when it was written ? it was true and that is truth, and it struck me as such. I found myself remembering the deep beauty in wholehearted loving, in full-faced believing. As we sang along to the same words I sa

Credit. Rozette Rago for The New York Times Critics Notebook With one of the best casts in TV history, “Friends” makes excellent comedy look easy. Rozette Rago for The New York Times Published Sept. 5, 2019 Updated Dec. 25, 2019 Once upon a time, we made do with less television. Three broadcast networks dominated everything. (Channels werent flipped so much as triangulated. We had a local public station and whatever oldies a UHF signal could tune in. Now? Now, we romanticize our cable-assisted, internet-borne so-called golden age and carp about the galactic girth of the streaming era. Somebody even lent the girth a fretful name: “peak TV” ? the “money cant buy happiness” of screen life. In retrospect, less television has come to imply lesser ? by volume, by value, by verisimilitude. But what was “Friends” lesser than? There are 236 episodes of it, merely one fewer than a combined tally of “Game of Thrones, ” “House of Cards, ” and “ Orange Is the New Black. ” Most of those episodes are perfect as tidy comedies. Maybe its hard to think of “Friends” as perfect, let alone as great, because it looked easy. Most “old TV” looked easy ? even when characters broke up, bled and died. Thats because, even when they did, they were obviously not in a movie. TV now is the movies, so we love it more. We believe it more. For its entire existence, the American sitcom was anti-cinematic, beholden to the demands of advertisers. Before there was too much TV, there was simply a lot, including a lot of NBCs “Friends. ” Think about the effort required to make about 24 episodes in a nine-month season (certain scripted shows somehow made more. This was impossible work that we at home took for granted. A network like NBC could turn “granted” into “mandatory” with maximal FOMO threat. “Lets all be there, ” it demanded in the 1980s. A decade later, we had to be there for “Must See TV. ” Technologically, it was an uncertain age. If you missed an episode, who knew when youd be able to catch it again? “Friends” was easy TV at an elite level. So many jokes, so much body comedy, so many surprises and awwws, and squeals of live-studio audience excitement. Hairdressers were doing ? and not infrequently botching ? the Rachel. Coffee shops became peoples second homes. Tens of millions of Americans watched all of that writing and directing and acting, all of that seemingly effortless effort, for all 10 of its years. That work and a countrys devotion to it feels like proof of a golden age of something. Image Credit. Paul Drinkwater/NBCU Photo Bank Familiarity is the magnet of every decent American sitcom. The “com” cant compete alone and neither can the “sit, ” even though, together, theyre obviously quite the sandwich. But the many nights Ive spent recumbent on my sofa laughing at, say, Ross and Phoebe debating evolution, or Phoebe, Joey and Ross impersonating Chandler, or Chandler blanching at Monicas desperate new cornrows or Rachel taking forever to tell somebody who the father of her baby is ? those nights have never really been about the situation comedy of “Friends. ” Theyve only ever been about us ? me and these six people ? and my apparently enduring need to know what theyre up to and how they are, even though Ive known for 25 years. “Friends” debuted on NBC in the fall of 1994, ran for an entire decade, typically had around 25 to 30 million viewers a week (sometimes many more) and now airs in Nickelodeons Nick @ Nite block, which my cable conglomerate has stationed near the top of the channel pyramid. That means if youre a chronologist like me, the five-channel trip from NY1 ? past the local news, TNT and “The Simpsons” ? always terminates at Chandler, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel and Ross. Laziness is a factor. (Do you use the number keys on your remote? Ill bet you dont even have a remote at this point. But, really, its simplicity. “Friends” actually is enormously easy to watch. “The genius of “Seinfeld” (and “The Simpsons, ” too) has everything to do with the “com” arising from the “sit. ” What trouble will Jerry and the gang instigate? Whether youre watching an episode for the first time or the 27th, the inciting premise is a major element of the pleasure. The premise of “Friends” is the friends. Of course, the friends started out with a touch of the Jerrys. They, too, were a white cohort living in New York City (the West Village rather than Seinfelds Upper West Side. And many an early episode involved defending social etiquette (“Those are not the rules! ” Ross barks at a foe in a laundromat) and trying out twisted dating schemes (Monica and Joey try to bust up a couple in order to have the newly single partners for themselves. But on “Seinfeld, ” the city and the characters righteous belief in their own norms spurred them on to increasingly lunatic misanthropy. They were anti-socialites. Not so on “Friends. ” Matters of behavior and economic inequality only seemed to bring them together. Take the shows 29th episode. Everybody goes out for a nice dinner to celebrate Monicas promotion, and Phoebe, Joey and Rachel order the cheapest items on the menu, then balk at evenly dividing the bill. Income turns those three against the other three, until Monica loses her job and Joey valiantly offers to pay for her 4 coffee ? with Chandlers money. The theme song didnt lie: They really were there for each other, punch lines and all. That thereness was the shows intangible hook. The writers could engineer plots for the directors to orchestrate. But these six actors working together, on anything, on nothing ? it was the highlight of many a persons week. That thereness was phenomenally elastic, too. These were six people who could snipe at one another, who could fight and lie and practice what wed now call radical honesty yet keep so many secrets, who can break up (many times, in many ways) but, as a sextet, keep snapping back together. I like them that way, as half a dozen. I like them in tandems and trios, as human math problems, as chemistry experiments. Maybe 10 times Ive watched Chandler, Joey and Monica break down and confess to the other three that, yes, Chandler did pee on Monicas jellyfish sting. I dont know how many takes that sequence took or how much caffeine was consumed. But its never less than a marvel of harmonized hysterics. That kind of exclamatory, high-energy comedy could happen in any configuration of the cast because it was the best such collection in the history of television. Other hall-of-fame comedies, like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Cheers, ” had wits and jesters and clowns mixed in among the goody-goodies and grumps. Some, like “All in the Family” and the first few seasons of “Designing Women, ” were all zingers, personality and delivery before the whole thing went to schtick. A few permanently watchable jewels like “The Golden Girls” and “Frasier” sneaked in a combo platter of slapstick, vinegar and fuzzies. But the proportions were bigger on “Friends. ” They went for more, more often, and rarely missed. For one thing, the actors had more to play with. The “Friends” friends started out as types. Rachel was a princess, Monica a control freak, Joey a dumb actor. But the types kept recombining. Ross seemed like a geek because his paleontology was frequently mocked and theres something gluey in the music of David Schwimmers whine. But Ross was sad, needy, insecure, quick to anger ? dark, basically ? and built like a jock. Phoebe evolved rapidly from hippie naïf to schemer, dreamer, peacekeeper, and pot-stirrer. In another era, shed have been the “Threes Company”-era Suzanne Somers of the bunch, a hapless bombshell. But Lisa Kudrow, with her akimbo intelligence, brought the part in sideways. Not far into the shows run, actually, some of the six are watching TV and Chandler, in Matthew Perrys contagious sardonic snark, says “I think this is the episode of ‘Threes Company wheres theres some kind of misunderstanding. ” “Then Ive already seen this, ” Phoebe snaps and turns off the TV. “Friends” could easily have been “Threes Company, ” where “sit” and “com” strained credibility. Chandler was so frequently presumed gay that he could have been Jack Tripper, the faux-mosexual from the other show. And Matt LeBlanc played Joey like Somers but by way of Tony Danza. That probably would have made Courteney Cox the Joyce DeWitt of “Friends” ? neutrally sane. For a few episodes at least, Cox, as Monica, seemed meant as the crux of the pack. Monica was Rosss sister. Rachel was an old high-school friend who became her roommate. But halfway through Season 1, it was clear this boat had no captain, just a lot of oars. And the rowing Cox did has never received its due. She wasnt as rubbery a funny person as Perry and Schwimmer or as radiant and tangy in her approach to comedy as Jennifer Aniston was as Rachel. She couldnt physicalize sarcasm and shock with as much cursive and calculus as the other five. But athletic gumption launched Monica entirely beyond classification. I mean, I guess her type was Type A. Monica made the most psychological sense, as a former fat person whos holding on to whatever it took to shed the weight and keep it off. We can shake our heads now at the idea of the shows laughing at her size through the fat suit Cox wears in flashbacks. These flashbacks also explain why she seemed to think everything was grist for competition, why winning and losing mattered so much to her, why control was so important. And Monica lost so much control, so much cool, so much coolness. Each actor managed to do a lot with intensity, but Cox made it a state of Monicas mind. People now ding “Friends” for all kinds of offenses ? regarding homosexuality, mental health, race, interracial dating, ethnicity. (Heres pregnant Rachel, exasperated by the surfeit of gift diapers at her shower: “What are we feeding this baby ? Indian food? ”) “Frie
