I have ordered several copies of this LP, over a long period of time, and every one has had an audible defect in the EXACT same place; Side 2, track 4. I suspect the defect is in the master pressing or is occurring from mechanical handling during manufacture. In any case, it's quite disturbing that Friday Music isolates themselves from direct contact with their customers. If I didn't like this album so much, I'd have given up on trying to get a clean copy long ago! Still hoping............ The superlatives that are heaped on this masterpiece are all deserved, which is a rarity in these days of spin and selfies. This is simply one of the finest song cycles that you will ever listen to now or in the future. Once you have heard the full album (several tracks are of course widely popular in their own right), it will leave you speechless and moved like few albums can. It will become one of your favourite pieces of music, and you will return to it again and again because of how the beautiful chord composition, the flawless execution, and the haunting lyrics of each of the songs make you feel. I am not going to enumerate the tracks other than to say that each is absolutely glorious in its own right (I confess my particular love of “Approaching Lavender” and “Your Love’s Return”) and the product of a fertile genius in one of his most productive periods. Let me give you an example of the timeless beauty and power of this album. I recently had a dinner party where some of the guests who are in their mid-twenties and thirties heard it for the first time. Born long after the album was recorded and well-passed the period of Gordon Lightfoot’s peak popularity in the mid-1970s, they had only a vague knowledge of the title track. They were so taken with this album that they asked if we could restart it and stop the conversation around the table while we listened to it. At the end, they all agreed it was one of the most beautiful collections of songs that they had ever heard and all of them asked to borrow my CD of it. I know few albums that elicit that kind of response from young people born 25 years after their release. Purchase this album, embrace it, absorb the beauty, and make it part of your life. You will be giving Mr Lightfoot a couple of dollars for his retirement in Toronto, and in exchange he and his band are going to share with you one of the most enduring and beautiful records ever made. I can think of no better bargain than that!
