When her new apartment catches on fire, she is rescued by Minato Hinageshi, a 21-year-old firefighter with a strong sense of justice. Hinako is drawn to his dependable personality, and they bond when he begins learning how to surf. As the two spend time together, they fall in love; however, when Minato goes surfing during a storm, he drowns while rescuing a person. Hinako is distraught with his death, but one day, she finds out that he appears in water whenever she sings "Brand New Story" a song the two of them often sang together. Initially happy she can see him again, Hinako later learns that he cannot be free unless she is able to move on with her life. Everything is ridiculously perfect, but one day Minato drowns while trying to save someone from the ocean.

Hinako, understandably takes it pretty bad, but to her surprise, whenever she starts singing their favorite song, Minato's spirit appears in the closest body of water - be it a stream, the ocean, or a bottle of mineral water. The whole story is really about Hinako, Minato's friends and family, and how they slowly but finally learn to "let go. Of course, it's magical-realism, so in the end we get to witness some crazy action as well, where we surf down a skyscraper with our protagonists. Unfortunately, this is not the most original story, the characters are a little two dimensional, and the filmmaking could've been a little braver. It's fine though, the film looks really nice, colorful with constantly glowing orange hues and cool blues. The action looks fantastic as well and the environments feel very "lived in" and detailed. Seeing it on a big screen really adds to the experience. It is also paced well, has some pretty funny moments, as well as a couple of quite moving ones. Recommended if you manage to catch it screening somewhere, but not an essential viewing. There. Whats the easiest way to tell the next generation of anime directors work apart from the creative shadow of those who came before ? and especially from the look and feel of Studio Ghibli? Easy: Just listen to the soundtracks they choose to define their movies personalities. Makoto Shinkai connects with a younger demo by setting his films to the boy-band stylings of a J-pop group called the Radwimps, while Masaaki Yuasa embraces an even more mainstream sound with “Ride Your Wave” by leaning on Generations From Exile Tribe, turning its hit single “Brand New Story” into more than just a theme. Plenty of couples have a favorite tune, but Yuasa uses this silly love song so often in the film, it practically becomes a joke unto its own ? the conduit by which a young woman struck by tragedy calls her boyfriend back from the beyond. The dead dude, Minato (voiced by actual Generations From Exile Tribe member Ryota Katayose) comes whenever Hinako (Rina Kawaei) sings their favorite song, but his spirit can only manifest in water, so she invents all sorts of unconventional ways to keep him close: conjuring him in her bathtub, carrying him around in a Thermos and, in one particularly desperate moment, even watching him manifest at the bottom of a toilet bowl. Its roughly at this point that audiences can be sure Yuasa is playing this teenybopper romance with tongue in cheek, although that doesnt make it any less effective with the target audience ? or any more forgivable with those who rightly expect better. The signature eccentricity of Yuasas style has made his oeuvre unusually popular among toon enthusiasts looking for films that dont conform to the predictable tropes of Japanese animation, as evidenced by the trippy, free-form aspect of moments in “Mind Game” and “The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, ” where music was just one of the tools that set the films playful sequences apart. Weird comes with the territory in Yuasas work. The surprising thing about the wonky directors latest feature is just how square it all feels: A young wave rider falls in love with a trainee firefighter (cue worlds corniest montage) before a freak accident claims his life. Even when Yuasa is being impish here, hes still coloring within the lines of a decidedly dull genre: the I-fell-in-love-and-then-he-died-but-his-spirit-stuck-around-to-watch-over-me teen romance. Initially, the two bond over bad music, a shared interest in surfing and their mutual love of finless porpoises. After Minato disappears, Hinako withdraws and moves away from the ocean, slowly working up the nerve to surf again ? and when she does, its in the most extravagantly over-the-top way imaginable, catching a wave so epic, it could only be depicted via animation. For Yuasa, playing so much by formula smacks of compromise, as if a punk auteur like John Waters or Gregg Araki had agreed to adapt a Nicholas Sparks novel. Then again, being defiantly unusual will only get you so far in this industry, and judging by “Ride Your Wave, ” Yuasa also wants to be popular ? perhaps more than any among his hipster contingent of existing fans might have guessed. But who can blame him after Shinkais “Your Name” shattered practically every box office record in Japan? That film showed the skys-the-limit commercial potential of a medium in which Yuasas films have felt almost like a kind of outsider art ? although his Annecy-winning 2017 feature “Lu Over the Wall” certainly pointed in this direction. Here, we feel him reaching for relevance, although the effect is so nauseatingly twee at times, it can be hard to take the film seriously. When Hinako and Minato are first shown falling in love, they share a sequence of experiences so generic, it suggests the background footage that plays behind karaoke videos: fireworks shows, sunset walks on the beach, paragliding, taking super-cute selfies together and (somewhat surprisingly, given the medium) soft-focus, golden-lit s-e-x. Later on, after Hinako figures out that humming their song is all it takes to see Minato again, the movie offers a parody version of similar activities. Only this time, Hinako has devised a hilarious way to bring him along “in spirit. ” Cue a second montage, even more Instagram-perfect than the first, in which they try on clothes, rent a rowboat, sing karaoke and so forth, doing all of these activities while he floats in the giant porpoise-shaped balloon she drags along to contain him ? and while singing that “Brand New Story” song at every turn. If your ears had teeth, the insipid tune would give them cavities, although its pretty much the right sound for the movies super-perky sensibility. By almost any measure, the film lays the romance on way too thick upfront, but that no doubt felt necessary considering that it was not meant to last forever. Still, the movie goes overboard in making the dead boyfriend seem perfect, to the extent that the former firefighter even continues saving lives in his new form. Sooner or later, Hinako will have to learn to face the world on her own, which is where the tension finally arises before this dopey film reaches its sappy conclusion ? by showing its heroine, so effortless on water, “learning to ride lifes waves too. ” The great stars of Hollywood were, and maybe still are, our demigods. From the trippy and enthralling Mind Game, to the loopy Lu Over The Wall, and even the brutally graphic and unforgiving DEVILMAN crybaby, you know youre in for a ride when his name comes out in the credits. Though at first glance his newest feature, Ride Your Wave, may seem like his most accessible film yet, it still offers an emotional and eye-popping visual feast that is as cheesy and predictable as it is charming, touching and funny. Tears may be shed, and youll have the theme song stuck in your head for days. The film is about Hinako (voiced by Kawaei Rina) a college student who loves to surf. She isnt a competitive surfer but loves the water and can effortlessly glide on the waves. She moved away from home to go to college and also figure out what he wants in life. We also meet Minato (voiced by Ryôta Katayose) a small-town firefighter trainee who is always trying to do the right thing. Their adorable meet-cute moment comes when Minato rescues Hinako from her burning apartment building. The first act of the film pretty much serves as your standard romantic comedy, dealing with Hinako and Minato becoming a couple. But Yuasa does his own spin on it by focusing on visuals instead of dialogue. Through a series of vignettes, we see the highlights of their relationship, and how their differences and mutual love for water brings them together. This montage is wrapped by the movies main musical theme “Brand New Story” by Generations from Exile Tribe, which becomes a vital part of the story. The song is sung by Minato and Hinako on their first date and quickly becomes their song, playing in the background during several scenes. Its a choice that could quickly get tiresome, but by the time it plays for the last time, it will be an emotional gutpunch. The films art style is reminiscent of DEVILMAN crybaby, with exaggerated features that play with proportions as if youre looking at the story reflected in moving water, which is aided by the pastel color palette that dominates Ride Your Wave. Yausa also plays with diverse camera angles to capture the surfing action, making you feel like youre one with the water. Of course, such a happy relationship so early in the film can only lead to tragedy. After a tragic accident forces the newfound lovers apart, the film quickly becomes a poignant exploration of grief and the difficulty of moving on. This happens just as the characters discover that, by singing their favorite song, they can magically be together again ? as long as water is involved. Its a plot torn straight out of the ‘90s, and the film fully embraces the cheesiness of it all. The characters know how ridiculous this sounds, but their chemistry in the first act was so palpable that you cant help but sympathize with their pain. This second act becomes one of loss and pain, as the color palette becomes a bit duller and muddier, the pace gets lower and the music becomes more somber. Ride Your Wave also doesnt give a concrete explanation to whats going on, allowing the audience to interpret it as a truly supernatural romcom with cute and cheesy moments of two impossible lovers trying to make their impossible relationship work. Or, you can think of it as a heartbreaking story of a person unable to deal with the loss of their lover and imagining a continuation to their relationship through the power of a song. The third act of Ride Your Wave then becomes one of healing. As the story explores the main characters past and what led them to become who they are, it allows them to move on and become who they were always meant to be. Yuasa is also interested in exploring what it means to truly “save” someone, not only in a physical saving-someone-from-the-edge-of-death way, but how simple acts of kindness can impact a person in ways you could never imagine and without being aware of it. Ride Your Wave may be predictable, but it quickly becomes a charming and heartfelt story about loss and clinging to life, one with realistic and likeable characters that may even teach you something about yourself.
