Watch full length the turning stone. Ive named this tale The Long Game, since it actually spans over the course of several years leading to the satisfying conclusion. Also, because its a long story. Ill understand if you skip this one for a shorter one. Several years ago I was in desperate need of a job. I was recently released from active duty in the US Army under a medical discharge, met my girlfriend (who is currently my wife) who moved in with me with her two small children from a previous marriage, and I was bouncing around from dead end job to dead end job. I had very little real world skills to offer to employers so my options were limited. I took a chance and interviewed with a small security company and was immediately hired. They liked that I was prior service, grilled me with questions only a veteran would know, and sent me to work on their biggest contract. I was on a site of a massive multi-million dollar construction location. A large named oil company was building a new headquarters and well. massive construction project just doesnt seem like a big enough description. As security, a bulk of our responsibility was checking and vetting all construction workers and contractors through the gate, inspect vehicles for possible stolen property, and generally serve as a deterring force. To put it simply, everyday my gate alone would process about 1-2 thousand cars during my 8 hour shift. The site was running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to meet the very tight construction schedule. I was only on one of 3 gates so thats about 3-6 thousand cars that came on site every day in an 8 hour period. Massive construction site. (As a side note that will become very important later in the story, each car that came through had to undergo a strict inspection when the driver is FIRST assigned to work on the site. Then the vehicle gets a sticker and is allowed to drive onto the construction site. We would ensure the car has the sticker, and then just process everyones badge through a verification machine. If all badges passed, and the car had a sticker, then we would let the contractors on site so they can get to work. Working there was great. All the security were ex-military so, beyond a little teasing about who they served with, everyone bonded really well. We didnt have sick days or vacations days, so when people would call off for personal reasons or illness, everyone happily chipped in to make up the lost hours. And, because of this teamwork, our big boss overlooked the call offs and let us make overtime money. No write ups, no punishments. Sometimes we were working 16 hour shifts back to back. I spent many nights sleeping in the parking garage in between shifts because it was easier than driving home, to sleep a few hours, only to come back to work for another 16 hour day. We were in outdoor conditions in all weather, and were on our feet on concrete the entire time. Sitting down was a luxury that we rarely saw. We couldnt leave the gate for any reason unless we were relieved by a supervisor who would try to come by twice during an 8 hour shift to let you go to the port-o-potty or quickly eat your lunch. Rain, harsh summer heat, bug storms (yes thats a thing) hail. you were out by your gate with no protection other than a construction hard hat. I know these sound like horrendous conditions but really, it was the best job I ever had. Because of the conditions it was no wonder that 95% of the employees were male. We tried hiring females but most would last a few days before quitting. Those people who did not quit in a few days were lifers and loved the job. The problems began about 3 months into the job. One of the supervisors was quitting to go back to school so a position opened up. Everyone was given an opportunity to apply for the supervisor position. I was encouraged by the night shift supervisor (who was the one quitting) to go for the promotion because he thought I would be a good replacement for him, even though I was the newest officer on the site and had the least amount of experience. So, I threw in my hat just for laughs. Two other people applied. One was a guy who had obvious seniority. The other was a girl (one of three on the site) who had been there for about a year. We were given a face to face interview with the boss. Well call him Jim. My interview went well and Jim liked that I was ambitious. Jim was also the guy who accepted me onto the site in the first place. The next phase of testing was a practice run as a temporary supervisor. We were each given a day to be the supervisor in charge. Jim was there, along with a junior Supervisor named. Ray, yeah, thats a good name for him. (For clarification, Ray did not want the promotion and was happy performing his regular duties) both were present just incase situations occurred that was beyond our ability to handle they were standing by to assist. My test day went well. I finished all tasks assigned to me and I even managed to handle a minor emergency on my own. The other two applicants apparently didnt do to well. The senior guy kept forgetting his list of tasks he was given to accomplish and kept going back to the office to ask Jim what he should do next. The Girl did ok, but every time she would check up on the guards she would flaunt around her temporary rank, make employees call her “maam”, and bragging about how she was definitely going to be getting the promotion. Imagine her shock when I was given the position as the new night shift supervisor. To say she was angry was an understatement. Apparently she was so upset that she didnt get the promotion that she called me on my personal cell phone. She stole my number from the supervisor emergency phone. To add to the situation, I had not yet been informed I got the promotion. Nothing official had been put out just yet. Not a direct quote but paraphrasing as best as I can: Me: hello? Girl: How does it feel? Me: um. whos this? Girl: what? You dont know? I thought supervisors are supposed to know EVERYTHING! Me: very confused) You called OP, I think you may have the wrong number. Girl: I know who I called! Dont pretend like you dont know. You got the promotion because youre all sexists pigs! Me: I got the promotion? Cool! Girl: That promotion was supposed to be mine but I guess since Im not in the bro-club they just gave it to you. If you dont resign the position to me Im going to tell HR about all this sexism and youll all be fired! Me: What sexism? I got the position by passing the tests. Isnt it sexist to assume you should get the promotion only because you happen to be born a female? Isnt that act alone sexist? Girl: But only men get promoted to leadership positions. Me: 95% of the site is male! Odds are males are going to get promoted. Sorry you didnt make the cut but none of this is my problem. So I hung up the phone and called both Jim and Ray to inform them about the call. I was assured that I was promoted, they didnt know how she found out, and they were going to file harassment on my behalf to HR for her stealing my phone number from the work phone and contacting me with threats. And thats where the story SHOULD end. But oh no fellow readers. it has only just begun. Now would be a good time to get some popcorn and a drink. So about two to three months roll by and Im getting into the role of Supervisor. Girl, has since been removed from the site, and the employees are really happy that Im the new supervisor and that Girl is gone. Things continue as normal and I begin bonding with my staff. I especially bond with a guard that no one liked. His name for this story is Victor. Victor is a marine veteran, he was in the initial invasion of Iraq and developed severe PTSD. It makes him very confrontational, argumentative, and a super big A-hole to anyone who talks to him. I liked the guy from the get go and we quickly became close friends. Every night I would hang out with him between my duties and we would talk. I eventually convinced him to seek help from the Veterans Association, and go to PTSD counseling. He was also going to school to get his Masters degree (Thanks to Ray who convinced him to not give up on his education) and would just need to vent sometimes. I was that vent. He would blow up at me, yell and scream, and when he was done we would hug it out. It was therapy for him and I didnt mind. All seemed to be going well until one day I came to visit with Victor. What I didnt know was that Victor was pulling a 16 hour shift and actually worked the afternoon and the night shift. So when I showed up to work he had already been there a majority of the day. He asked me if I spoke with Jim recently. I hadnt. Apparently Jim didnt show up to work today. A few days go by and well. Jim mysteriously disappeared. After 3 or 4 days of his disappearance, Ray called an emergency meeting with the supervisors. In attendance was myself, Ray, and another supervisor from the second shift who is not important and does not require a fictional name. The meeting was to try and figure out what happened to Jim. We pooled our knowledge together and decided the best course of action was to contact the main headquarters branch to see if they knew something. He wasnt answering the phone when we called him so we feared he was in the hospital and no one bothered to tell us. When we called we were given the run around, but eventually an HR rep who was friends with Ray spilled the beans. Jim had quit the job. Girl (from earlier) apparently made good on her threats. After she was kicked out of the site, she got ahold of a lawyer and began the process of suing the company. Not only for sexism and favoritism, but also sexual harassment. As it turned out, Jim was a lonely man. Girl and Jim began flirting and eventually sexting. and the idiot used the company supervisor cell phone to do it. She not only had copies of the messages, but when the company dug into the phone records they had all the evidence needed to see she wa

Artist: Billy Woods & Kenny Segal Album: Hiding Places Listen: YouTube Spotify Apple Music Tidal Zippyshare Background by /u/ItsBigVanilla Writing about Billy Woodss personal life feels like a betrayal, since hes taken extensive measures to maintain an aura of you-cant-even-see-my-face privacy within even the marginal underground bubble he exists in. That being said, the New York-based rapper was born in Washington, D. C. to a Jamaican mother who taught English literature and a Zimbabwean father described by the rappers official biography as “a would-be Marxist revolutionary. ” The cultural hodgepodge deepened even further when the family moved to Africa and eventually Zimbabwe, where his father served as a government official before his death and Woodss return to America at the age of eight. These early years have greatly informed his music, and listeners can frequently find references to Zimbabwe and global political history throughout his vast catalogue. And a vast catalogue it is. Woods began his solo career by releasing Camouflage in 2003 and The Chalice in 2004, after which he joined underground rap supergroup The Reavers, releasing various projects with them from 2005 to 2006. He then formed the always-underrated duo Super Chron Flight Brothers with fellow rapper Priviledge, and the group released a handful of projects that saw Woods coming into his own as an MC while honing the skills that would come to define his later career. SCFB capped their run with 2010s fantastic Cape Verde, the most fully realized moment of the Woods saga pre 2012. 2012 marked the beginning of a Woods renaissance (if obscure rappers that bounce between groups qualify for something as grand as a renaissance. It was this year that he released his first solo album in eight years, History Will Absolve Me to critical acclaim and a promotion from the rank of “nobody” to “nobody but with a masterpiece” (think Evan Dara, D. Keith Mano, etc. He quickly followed the project with 2013s Blockhead-produced Dour Candy as well as Half Measures and Race Music, both collaborative projects with rapper ELUCID under the moniker Armand Hammer. Woods and ELUCID had first worked together on History Will Absolve Me, and their chemistry as a duo propelled them into a collaborative relationship that has served as so much more than a footnote in their careers. Armand Hammer released an EP, Furtive Movements, in 2014, and Woods followed it up with his understated 2015 solo album Today, I Wrote Nothing. Woods released another Blockhead-produced album, Known Unknowns, in 2017: Armand Hammer released Rome later that year. Hammer drops Paraffin in 2018; Woods drops Hiding Places with Kenny Segal less than a year later. Fans still reeling from Hiding Places get hit with another solo project, Terror Management, within months. Armand Hammers last project came out just a year ago, and yet it already feels like theyve gone silent on us, lost in the maelstrom of Woodss output. If it isnt already clear, the man doesnt sleep, and in a miracle the likes of which hasnt been seen since the birth of the Christ child, none of these projects has been less than great. You still with me? Follow all those links yet? Okay, take a deep breath. Kenny Segal is, comfortably, one of the best producers alive. After growing up in Maryland, he moved to Los Angeles and studied audio recording at the University of Southern California. He began producing hip-hop for the L. A. -based rap collective Project Blowed, whose members include some of the best rappers working today, such as Busdriver, Open Mike Eagle, and Nocando. His fingerprints can be found throughout all of those artists discographies, especially as one half of The Kleenrz, a collaborative project between Segal and rapper Self Jupiter. Hes also produced for Milo and MC Paul Barman, among others. Segal is the ear behind many of the best rap songs and albums of the 2010s, and yet hes anything but showy. His true talent lies in contorting his style to match the artist hes working with, and a quick perusal of his catalogue demonstrates just how much of a musical chameleon he can be, all the while retaining a strong sonic identity which he emphasizes on his Kenstrumentals series, which can be found on his Bandcamp. On his 2018 solo instrumental project, Happy Little Trees, he gives a glimpse of an unrestrained self, managing to be equally compelling without an MC at the mic as he is with one there. Like Woods, he is a prolific force in underground music: in addition to Hiding Places, he produced the entirety of Hemlock Ernsts full-length solo debut, Back at the House, in 2019. Compare the two releases without any foreknowledge of their credits and youll be hard-pressed to conclude that the same producer crafted both of them; therein lies Segals genius. Segal and Woods have worked together in the past, but Hiding Places marks their first (and hopefully not last) project as a team. Every song is produced entirely by Segal except for “A Day in a Week in a Year”, which features additional production from Marcella Elyse Winn. According to Woods, the album had a long gestation period due to both artists busy schedules, and the time that went into crafting it is evident in the finished product. It should also be noted that both artists released great projects later in the year, as if this masterpiece wasnt enough; Woods went on to release a second album, Terror Management, and Segal collaborated with Future Islands singer Sam Herring for his debut album as rapper Hemlock Ernst, Back at the House. Now, enough preamble. Review by /u/ItsBigVanilla To Billy Woods, progression is inwardly focused. As the New York-based rapper continues to evolve and broaden his musical horizons, his projects have become increasingly claustrophobic, the mirror turning further towards his own blurred face. Woods hasnt yet reached the “living in a barn with cats” status reserved for enigmatic loner Aesop Rock, but hes just as self-aware. On Hiding Places, he takes aim at the usual societal ills that have plagued his work for years, but he does so in a way that feels much more individualistic than ever before. As the albums title suggests, the omnipresent themes of its 41-minute runtime are the things we hide and the places we keep them. Woods treats this literally at times ( Houthis “Moms showed us where she kept our passports hidden”) and figuratively at others, such as in “Steak Knives”, where his poor communication with friend leads to hidden feelings, the hidden realities of two men. Every song contains at least one reference to something thats been secreted away, but the rappers greatest trick is his ability to shroud his own humanity under lead sheets of irony and cynicism. For every confession, every emotional admission on the album, there are at least two punchlines set in place to soften the blow. On “Spider Hole”, for instance, Woods bellows “I dont want to go see Nas with an orchestra at Carnegie Hall”, referring to the legendary MCs actual 2012 charity performances. The line is funny, sure, but it implies so much more than meets the eye: an appropriation of rap, a white commodification of black art, a sense of disillusionment with heroes, a distaste for the genre in its current state. Are these interpretations all correct? Most likely not, but Woods hides them within seemingly innocuous lines at every turn. Which isnt to downplay the albums brilliant gallows humor. Would it be a bold claim to say that Woods is the funniest rapper alive? His comedy isnt jokes for jokings sake, its more of a reaction to a world so broken that theres no other choice but to grin. On “Checkpoints”, the best song of 2019, he raps “Quit my job to kick raps instead / So family meeting, everybody gotta start bringin in bread” right before producer Kenny Segal unleashes a sea of crashing cymbals that threaten to knock the track on its ass, startling the vocals into a desperate yell that works so well because words dont just come out of Billy Woodss mouth, they tumble out of it, they leap out of it. Its a moment simultaneously hilarious and horrifying, cathartic and stifled, climactic and inevitable; its one of the best bits of production the genre has to offer. In less grandiose moments, such as “Bigfakelaugh”, the rapper finds out that his insurance wont cover some unspecified treatment and tells his family to “I guess just forget it”, letting out an ad-libbed laugh so smugly jarring that you cant help but see the whole thing as some sort of cosmic trick being played on us all. A simple bar like this conjures up images of America, of blackness, of self-deception ? whats remarkable is that these themes that are only ever referenced implicitly, and yet they seep into the pores of Woodss work. Someone more concerned with unifying his review might say that theyre hidden in plain sight. And as the old saying goes, behind every great rapper is a great producer. Woods has proven to be a master of collaboration, and never has his chemistry with another artist been more apparent than it is here, with Kenny Segal. Segal owes much of his work on Hiding Places to rock music, his penchant for the power of live instrumentation apparent throughout the project. He deploys these elements sparingly, such as in “Spongebob”, where a guitar steps onto the scene like a man with a gun, takes a bow, then reappears again in the midst of a battle between shimmering synths and lonely, distorted bass. The interplay here is crucial: theres a duality in the albums production between grit and glitter, between heaven and earth, and Segal continually creates something just as gorgeous as it is menacing. “Speak Gently” begins as a riff-heavy electric guitar piece, but morphs into something much mo
Somebody call scooby-doo and the mystery gang for this sequel. Extreme Frugal Tips. Warning this is a REALLY long post Dog Tax: Excel finance tracking: Here we go…Im posting on my frugal living with REAL examples from my life. Single female aged 48 living in the mid-west. I started my adult life with a high school education and low paying jobs until I hit 30. Today my net worth is more than a million and I love my life…I want for nothing and Im very content. Read on if you dare…some of this stuff may scare you… Career I didnt start college till I was 26, prior to that I was in low paying dead-end jobs and as a result I started my adult life being a penny-pincher. I got a BS and 2 MS degrees in the STEM field at state schools while working full time jobs (close to minimum wage till I graduated with my BS. I applied for academic scholarships (and got some) and I took out the minimal I could in student loans. I paid them all back within 5 years. I had to relocate for my first job out of college. It was 2002 and I started out at 44, 000 salaried a year (50 hours weeks, no overtime and working on 2 Masters degrees in my free time) So…I started my professional career at age 30, climbed the corporate ladder, relocated several times and went into management. I worked long hours, on-call 24/7, lots of stress and kept increasing my salary for 16 years. I started to contribute to my retirement when I turned 30. As soon as I could (I think around 36 after I paid of my student loan debts) I maxed out my 401K and ROTH every year. At my highest salary, at age 46, I was making 140, 000 year (remember ? I started at age 30 at 44, 000 and increased to 140, 000 by the time I was 46. I ALWAYS continued to live frugally and saved. I own my house outright and have no debt and plenty in savings. I dont have a pension. My retirement is all in a 401K and IRAs, traditional and ROTH Once I was financially established I took a 60% lower paying job at a University. Im 48 and because I live frugally I could probably retire (FIRE) but I like to have something to do. I also enjoy the social aspect of work and a feeling of purpose. I have no stress, great benefits, loads of time off and have never worked more than 40 hours a week in this job and no weekends, holiday…etc. I set my own hours and have no direct reports. Im currently working 6:30am ? 2:30 pm in the winter so I can hike with my dog after work before it gets dark. It was a very good move for me. Ill probably work here into my mid 60s just because its so cushy Health I exercise. I walk about 7 miles a day I eat pretty healthy, dont smoke, dont drink pop and I dont drink alcohol (anymore…. Sometimes I miss a good craft beer but its better for my stomach and sleep without it I have medical, dental, vision through work. My plans cost me 56 a month I have the high deductible plan and max out my HSA but I only end up using a few hundred a year. Someones always bringing in home baked goods 2) I shop at Aldi and Walmart, mostly Aldi 3) I buy all my condiments in bulk: spices, chicken stock, oil, stevia (also concentrated) almond flour, chia, flax, rice, pasta…etc. I get some of this on Amazon because it works out cheaper. I make my own yougurt. 1 gallon yogurt = the price of a gallon of milk. It's easy to do. 4) I love this one…I save my teabags. After Ive used 2 teabags I make another cup of tea from them. I like herbal tea. The cheapest I can find is Celestial Seasonings on Amazon. By stretching the box of 20 teabags to 30 large cups of tea I save 35 year (assuming I drink 3 cups of tea a day. Each container will be used in a big batch of spaghetti or Lasagna or mushroom soup., when blueberries go on sale for 0. 89 cents for 6oz I buy twelve packages and freeze. 1 package is used to make 10 oatmeal breakfasts 10) I never buy name brand and I always search for reduced fruit/veg, meat…etc. 11) I do check the local flyers for sales. only shop once a week and I combine trips to save gas. House I brought the cheapest house in a really good neighborhood in a mid-west University town. Im in the third highest rated school district in the USA for STEM (per 2019 Newsweek article. I have a 1950s 1500sqft, 3 bed, 2 bath ranch with 2-car attached garage, separate laundry room, living and family room, large screened in-porch. I paid 135, 000 for it and my taxes are 1500 a year. Its bigger than I wanted but its what I had to do to get into my neighborhood. Houses like mine sell in a day with multiple offers over asking. I had to put some work into the house and spend some. I fixed it up so its now one of the nicest houses in the neighborhood and worth 35% more than I paid for it. I did some work myself such as painting and laying the laminate floor. I will stay here until I retire and then decide where I want to spend my retirement years. Central Florida is dirt cheap with no state taxes + low housing costs but I am not sure I can handle the heat and humidity. I have a high deductible on my home insurance but I max out my liability coverage. I have a high net worth so if someone tries to sue me I want to make sure Im covered and I dont have to pay out of my pocket. I have extras like sewer/water line coverage, sewer/water back-up because the lines in my neighborhood are old and you see peoples yards dug up all the time. I pay my policy in full and it works out to 75 a month In the winter, I keep my heat at 55 when Im not home or in bed and 60 when Im home. I wear wool thermal leggings and tops under my clothes all winter long at home. They are soft and comfy. I wear slippers. When Im lazing on the couch I snuggle under an electric blanket and with the dog. I have a down comforter on the bed. The dog loves the cold. In the summer I wear shorts and a tank top (hence why I shave in the summer) and I keep the AC around 76 as the dog gets too hot I change my furnace filters every 2 months with the cheap ones I keep my water heating on a warm setting. When I run the shower I turn the hot all the way and its plenty hot enough for me Household maintenance/repairs I cut my own grass, do my own yard work and clean my own house I do what repairs I can myself. I U-tube it. I buy stuff from Menards and get the 11% rebate. Im not very handy or physically strong so I only tackle simple things I dont do a furnace/AC service every year. I lived in my last house 9 years and my furnace/AC were 20 years old when I sold it. I never did a service (other than change filters) and I never had a problem If I have to hire a big job (i. e. roof, furnace, crawlspace) I always get 3 quotes and try to negotiate the price after Ive received the quote in writing. Then I ask for a cash discount. If I have to replace something I try to go with a quality no-name brand. I do my research I use LED lightbulbs and I

Alice. MacGregor got her attention, waiting to see how the situation would unfold. She seemed to understand his concerns. Asha and Zolta looked on quietly with curious expressions. "Russell is here too. I'll be alright. I think it's best we show some trust, all things considered. I'll call for you when you come up. She proposed, trying desperately to tamp down the swarm of butterflies in her chest and stomach while maintaining a composed outward appearance. "All the same I hope I don't come up. Center of attention seems to get knives thrown at em. Lachlan reasoned. Alice chuckled shortly. "I presume you'll be wanting a place to sleep. Ah that's a fair point, lass. You go on then. I'll be here with these three furry companions. he offered. "Yeah, alright then. Alice agreed, turning her back to the shuttle and staring at the gates as she murmured to herself. "I'll just go meet with the council of raptor cats that love my brother like. a brother and could probably kill me with their toes. No sweat. What could go wrong? No, let's not answer that…" Alice's private musings lasted the short trip to where her brother stood before the priests of the village, her boots kicking up small clouds of dust as she walked along the narrow strip of non-irrigated land. The little cub Russell had been tending took flight at seeing so many authority figures at once, leading his mother on a short chase past Alice and towards the shuttle, where MacGregor sat himself in the dirt and attempted to offer the little tyke a relatively nonthreatening option. Between the Marine, Veera, Zolta, and Asha, he was soon corralled and playing with Lachlan's impressive moustache, giving his mother a chance to catch up with him. The assembled priests all watched the proceedings closely while Russell shared a moment with his sister. "You good. He asked simply, feeling as close to her as hed ever been. “Ready to be a part of whatever all this is? ” "Yeah, I'll be alright. she assured him, taking solace in his presence. "This is literally everything I've ever dreamed of, since first contact at least. Then I'll be at the shuttle if you need me. Io, is she good for translation. Yes sir, we're in the clear. the AI assured him excitedly, projecting herself in an outfit to match Alices as a sign of solidarity. It only lasted a instant however, the AI picking up on Russells attitude and insistence that this be Alices time. "Thanks, Io. Good luck sis. Love you, bro. Alice whispered, giving him a quick hug. He'd never been the over the shoulder type, but he'd been looking out for her from afar since they were teens. Her courage was bolstered as he turned from the gates, making it clear to the Cauthan that they should deal with his sister independently. "Yeah, you too, ” he called over his shoulder. “Don't keep them waiting. Ratha's a bitch but the rest are good people. Hell even she is, I guess. With that confusing statement Russell walked off, letting Alice initiate her own entrance to village life as the swell of chatter and gossip grew behind the line of priests. Alice focused on the one that she knew, approaching Antoth and bowing politely. "Hmph, I guess this one has some manners. Ratha muttered, earning herself Antoth's hand, and claws, on her shoulder. The towering Cauthan spoke diplomatically while he reined in his mate as tactfully as possible given the situation. "Alice Winters, I have presented the treaty with your people to my fellows here. We are tasked with the burden of guiding our people. And while there is understandable nervousness among us…" Antoth held up a hand as Alice made to speak. "We are cautiously optimistic that your presence will be beneficial to our village. There is much in this document that is…subject to interpretation. We open our gates to you as a gesture of goodwill and as an expectation that our kindness shall be returned. I. I see. Thank you all for your consideration. Alice spoke clearly, allowing her A-MACS to translate for her. Relief spread through her as most of the Cauthan present nodded or ruffled their feathers in a similar fashion to what she'd seen from Veera once things had calmed on the Event Horizon. "My name is Alice Winters and it's an honor to make your acquaintance. I am Russell's older sister. Has he always been such an insufferable human. Ratha demanded haughtily, resting a hand on her hip as her mate growled quietly. "Oh shut it, Antoth. You let him hug me. Would it surprise you to learn that he likes you more than most humans. Alice asked nervously, watching as the elderly couple among the priests smiled widely and nodded to one another, their graying fur and slightly drooping jowls shifting to display what Alice hoped was humor and favor. That theory of cultural evolutionary convergence was already churning in her head at their subtle movements. Ratha did not seem pleased with her answer. "Why me. Ratha demanded of the sky, tilting her head to regard the clouds above. "You've become dramatic now that you're with dramatic. Antoth declared, swiftly moving his hand from Ratha's shoulder to her belt. "This is not a hunt, my mate. It is diplomacy. Keep your knife at your side and give this one a chance. She tore into Winters when he asked about her courtship. You would have approved. Now introduce yourself and do not dishonor our word. Alice watched cautiously, playing with the sleeve of her jumpsuit as Ratha simmered in silent frustration. To her marginal relief it seemed more directed at Antoth than her. Eventually Ratha shoved his hand away from her knife and stared Alice down. "My name is Ratha, servant of Valta and mate of the priest of as he is. she simpered with a coy glance Antoth's way. "So long as you respect the authority of the Huntress and don't go on any crazed hunts like and I will not have problems. Alice nodded, knowing that said brother would absolutely escalate the situation if he were her. She opted to tilt her head deferentially instead, hoping to placate the grumpiest of the priests. "I should like to learn of Valta and your traditions; if you have time, of course. she offered. Ratha looked her over keenly, as if searching for deception or weakness. Alice was reminded of a hawk. "Maybe later. was all she would say on the matter, feeling the eyes of her fellows, her people, and Winters upon her. "Let's get on with this already. Seil is annoyingly warm today. Well if you would stop acting like she's her brother we'd be done by now. Staroth boomed, stepping forward as Ratha shot him a death glare. "Alice Winters, it's a pleasure to meet you. Name's Staroth, village Guardian. Your brother was welcome among us under Antoth, and he remains so now that I've taken up the mantle of Uthos. You're welcome in the barracks at any time. If youre his kin, theres a place for you. Alice glanced around in stunned silence, temporarily shaken by the abrupt reversal in mood. "I…thank you very much, Staroth. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that my brother found his way into your world, should I? Can I ask you a question. Alice ventured, sensing an ease and casual friendliness about the Guardian that she did not feel around the impenetrable bulwark that was Antoth. "Yeah, course! That's why you're here isn't it? You dont seem like the conquering type. Staroth laughed before turning on his heel with surprising speed. "Gael, Rakis, save it for the festival you stone for brains! Pardon me, Alice. You didn't hear that, did you. Uhh…I'm sorry. Alice responded with a shrug, guessing that her hearing, the language barrier, or both had led to her missing something. Staroth shook his head like a father watching his sons do something incredibly stupid that he nevertheless intended to allow them to see through. "Nah, probably for the best. Bunch of young boys with mating on the brain, wanting to know if your fur is soft. I'll drill them hard tonight, dont you fret. So Alice, you had a question. Staroth continued, seemingly unconcerned with most anything. "Yes, actually. Is there a prescribed manner in which a female should greet a male in public? I wouldn't want to offend you and I wasn't sure if it would be proper to shake your hand. Alice explained her hesitation. Staroth brought his hand to his chin as Gentia chuckled and cooed about 'how polite the sister was. Well you don't really have feathers, do you? All that fur up top, can you move it. Staroth asked curiously. Alice laughed and shook her head back and forth, kicking her loosely tied ponytail about. A handful of Cauthan behind them spoke animatedly about the length of Alices black mane of hair. "No sir, not intentionally. Ha! Don't ever call me sir again. Reminds me of being old. So show me a handshake then, eh? Don't think I've ever done such a thing with your brother. He enjoys scale bashing far too much. The guard said with overbearing friendliness. Alice held out her hand, palm rotated slightly upward. Staroth measured her closely for a moment, eventually holding out his own paw and looking Alice in the eye for confirmation. He was only a couple inches taller than her and his brown eyes were quite amicable. She nodded, prompting the captain to turn his head and regard two of his younger charges. "Ha ha. Uproarious joviality rose from the assembled guardsmen as Staroth took Alice's hand in a strong shake, the two of them squeezing harder until a firm pressure was established and the gesture explained. Alice flashed her teeth in a wide smile as her brother laughed from a distance. "A pleasure to meet you, Staroth. I will certainly be taking you up on that offer to visit the barracks and learn more about your ways. You let go of her this instant, you lech. A female Cauthan called from the crow
THAT ARM IS ELECTRIC! ????. Hi, I'm Rushan Abbas. I'm one of the Uyghur People of central Asia, and the Chinese Government has locked up many of my friends and relatives in concentration camps. I'm trying to help bring the worlds attention to this issue, and to shine light on the horrific human rights abuses happening in Xinjiang. I'm the founder of the Campaign for Uyghurs, and I'm a full time activist who travels the world giving talks and connecting with other groups that have suffered from Chinese repression. I've worked with Uyghur detainees in Guantanamo bay and I've raised a family. I'm currently banned from China because of my political work. Today I'm being helped out by Uyghur Rally, a group of activists focused on demonstrations and campaigns around these issues in the United States. Ask Me Anything! Since 2015, the Chinese Government has locked up millions of ethnic Uyghurs (and other Muslim minorities) in concentration camps, solely for their ethnic and religious identity. The ethnic homeland of the Uyghurs has become a hyper-militarized police state, with police stations on every block and millions of cameras. Cutting-edge technology is used to maximize the efficiency of this system, with facial recognition and biometric monitoring systems permeating every aspect of life in Xinjiang. This project is being orchestrated by the most senior officials in the Chinese government, and is nothing less than a full blown attempt to effectively eliminate the Uyghur people and culture from the face of the earth. This nightmare represents a profound violation of human rights on an industrial scale not seen since the second world war. They have gone to enormous lengths to hide the extent of this, but recent attention from investigative journalists and activists the eyes of the world have been turned on this atrocity. What can you do. Visit or for more information. PROOF - PROOF - PROOF - Ask me anything! I'll be answering questions all afternoon. EDIT: 5pm ET; Wow! What a response. Thank you all for all the support. We're going to take a break for a bit, but I'll try to respond to a few more comments at a later time. Follow me, CFU, and Uyghur Rally on twitter to stay updated on our activities and on the cause! uyghurn @rushan614. UPDATE: 12/12: WOW! Front page. Thanks so much Reddit! Well, from Uyghur Rallys end, wed like to say a few things: First of all, we are DEFINITELY not the CIA… we are just a group of activists that care a lot about something. Neither is Rushan. Working for the US government in the past doesnt make you a spy, and neither does working to end human rights abuses. Fighting big wrongs requires allegiances between activists, nonprofits, and governments… thats how change happens! So, for those of you who say we are the US government, you can believe that… but its not true. What is true is that something horrific is happening. Theres multiple ways of understanding it, and some details are hard to confirm, but there is overwhelming evidence of atrocities happening in XinJiang. This nightmare is real, no matter what the CCP says, and we feel that everyone in the world has a moral responsibility to do something about it. A lot of people have spoken about feeling helpless ? so what can you do? Heres a few things: Donate to Uyghur activist organizations ? Campaign For Uyghurs and others. Support other organizations representing oppressed religious and ethnic minority groups, such as the Rohingya in Bangladesh. Support Free Hong Kong. Follow us on social media. UyghurRally, Rushan614. Read and share media articles highlighting whats going on in XinJiang. Western media has done a good job of covering this, but all over the world it is being highlighted. Join our stickering campaign! “Google Uyghur”. You can print out stickers on our website. and distribute them! Boycott Chinese goods manufactured in XinJiang, and avoid companies that do business there or support the technology of repression. Cotton from Xinjiang is a big one, as are Chinese facial recognition/AI companies. Contact your government and ask them to do something about it! In the US, this is your senators and your congressmen. There are bills passed and being drafted can do something about this. Other countries around the world are also considering doing something about this, so look into local activist groups and movements within your government to stand up to Chinese oppression. Stay active and watch out for propaganda ? question everything! Its nice to see such a robust discussion occur in the comments section here on Reddit. That couldnt happen in China. Also, a last note. The Chinese government is not the Chinese people ? sinophobia is a real problem in the world. This is one nightmare, and shouldnt encourage further global divisions. The only way forward to find a way to be on the same page, and to support people everywhere all over the world. Freedom is a fundamental human right. "Respect and honour all human beings irrespective of their religion, colour, race, sex, language, status, property, birth, profession/job and so on. Quran 17/70.

Album: There Existed an Addiction to Blood Listen/Purchase: Bandcamp Spotify Google Play Music Tidal iTunes/Apple Music YouTube Background - provided by /u/yung_hokage_stef Comprised of rapper, actor, film producer, Tony award-winning thespian and frequent Sesame Street guest Daveed Diggs, alongside noise producers Jonathan Snipes and Bill Hutson, clipping. is an experimental hip-hop group hailing from Los Angeles, California. Since their inception in 2009, the trio has steadily released numerous projects to online audiences, each receiving acclaim from music publications and experimental fans alike, and in doing so have built up one of the most unique and critically celebrated discographies of the decade. Known primarily for their incorporation of harsh noise elements, clipping. have continuously rejected the comfort of familiar time signatures, standard song structures and catchy beats in lieu of hideously distorting them beyond recognition with unlikely inspiration from early avant-garde musicians such as John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer. Ambient art rap for the apocalypse, if you may. And yet, despite their near-inhospitable soundscape, clipping. have remained firmly rooted within hip-hop, proudly embracing the genres spirit of interconnectivity, anti-establishment and DIY ethics. From collaborations ranging from Hellfyre Club to Gangsta Boo, a consistent use of out-of-the-box samples, and ever-present political undertones, clippings discography is more like the music of yesteryear reprogrammed for a digital age in which every point of history has coalesced into one. Sonic Youth spliced with ODB. Kendrick Lamar aboard the Event Horizon. And now, Afrocentric mythos on Elm Street. Though clipping. consistently push the envelope by seemingly tearing down every expectation of what rap music should be, they simultaneously harken back to its earliest and purest forms. It doesnt take long to see how Public Enemy collaborators The Bomb Squads harsh, music-concrète-inspired production holds as much influence on their sound as industrial pioneers like Throbbing Gristle. Their first release in 2013 saw the group turning West Coast hip-hop on its head with the mixtape midcity, depicting the inner-city life and gang culture of California in perhaps the most disorienting and oppressive way imaginable. The G-funk of Long Beach and the bounce of Bay Area hyphy remained only in spirit as Diggs wove nihilistic passages of drugs, sex, and violence smothered between brash walls of static and ear-piercing synths, sometimes resembing a beat. Like E-40 on a Merzbow record, this dichotomy of old-school hallmarks blended with the hellish pulse of the future was enough for midcity to garner considerable online coverage and favourable reviews despite minimal promotion. They signed to the record label Sub Pop three months later. With Sub Pops backing they wasted no time getting to work on their self-titled debut, CLPPNG, taking the ideas they had with midcity and weaving them into a more digestible offering without compromising the abrasive qualities that drew fans in initially. With the harsh noise infusion taking a slight back seat this time around, clipping. focused their efforts on earworm hooks and upbeat instrumentals that were just fringe enough to keep the party going while making you question what the hell you were listening to. If a commercial rap album was manufactured by the deep web, it would materialize as CLPPNG. Released in 2014, it would go on to receive glowing reception, finding its way onto several year-end lists. In between tours of Broadway juggernaut Hamilton where Diggs starred as both Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette, clipping. dropped the hypersexual EP Wriggle to tide fans over until the release of their upcoming full-length, Splendor & Misery, slated to drop later that year in 2016. An Afrofuturist space opera, Splendor & Misery tells the story of a lone survivor of an uprising on board an intergalactic slave ship where the AI becomes infatuated with the protagonist. A soundtrack born from a barely living hull, the survivor wrestles between relinquishing his freedom in hopes of salvation, or sentencing himself to a lonely existence in the black ocean of space. Intertwining the slave songs of the Underground Railroad with 2001: A Space Odyssey, its an incredibly ambitious work of art that feels more like a play than an album at various points. Aside from clipping. s typical critical fanfare, Splendor & Misery would go on to receive a nomination for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in Short Form, the first album in the awards history to earn that honour since 1970. Aside from releasing aquatic musical novella “The Deep” in 2017 (also nominated for a Hugo Award) clipping. would remain relatively quiet for the next three years. On August 14, 2019, their vow of silence would be broken when they dropped the song “Nothing is Safe” paired with the announcement of their upcoming third studio album There Existed an Addiction to Blood. Billed as a “transmutation of horrorcore”, listeners prepared for a revisiting of classic horror tropes through the lens of clipping. s dystopian workings, supported by assisting singles “La Mala Ordina” and “Blood of the Fang”. Unleashed a few weeks later on October 18, There Existed an Addiction to Blood would arrive just in time for All Hallows Eve. Review - provided by /u/yung_hokage_stef Much discussion can be had from the title of the album alone, There Existed an Addiction to Blood. On the surface, it clearly echoes vampiric imagery, supported by the numerous wooden stakes on the albums cover. But with a few Google searches, one comes to find that the title pays homage to Bill Gunns 1973 experimental horror film Ganja & Hess, specifically a line from “The Blood of the Thing” composed by Sam Waymon for the films OST. Regarded as a landmark within African-American independent cinema, Ganja & Hess tells the story of Dr. Hess Green, an anthropologist studying an ancient civilization of blood-worshippers originating from Africa, the Myrthians. After his assistant attacks him with a Myrthian ceremonial dagger, Hess discovers his newfound immortality as a vampire, and with that an insatiable sanguine thirst. Amidst struggling to cope with his addiction, his assistants wife, Ganja, comes to Hess looking for her husband who has since killed himself. The two quickly form a bond, with Hess turning Ganja into a vampire, and they soon begin to live out their ghastly lives together. Unfortunately for Gunn, Ganja & Hess was the exact opposite of what its financiers had hoped for. Hot on the heels of box-office hits like Blacula and Blackenstein, a modest budget of 350, 000 was supplied to create a cheap, sufficient black horror film that would satisfy audiences with mainstream horror schlock and blaxploitation tropes. Instead they got a challenging, albeit rewarding piece on addiction, religion, black identity and cultural assimilation/extinction. To the chagrin of Gunn, the films producers pulled it from release shortly after its first post-Cannes Film Festival premiere, where its length was cut drastically, its name changed, its rights sold to another company, and it was ultimately forgotten (though it has found a home amongst cult audiences. Why bring all this up? Because the inspiration Gunns film has on clipping. s newest outing goes far beyond a title. Much like Ganja & Hess, There Existed an Addiction to Blood uses the classic horror iconography of violence, mortality and the paranormal as a vehicle for something far more poignant and political. Topped off with masterful storytelling, mind-bending flows and production that is both breathtaking and bone-chilling, clipping. s third LP is a contorted portrait of the fragility of life within a city stained with shit, piss, and of course, blood. In true clipping. fashion, the project begins with an “Intro” track, typically characterized by Diggs setting the stage for what's to come through snappy rapid-fire flows, essentially a capella save for some ambiance and background noise. Over the sound of what appears to be somebody digging a grave, Diggs details a rushed story in second-person about a former drug dealer haunted by past ghosts, the scent of death approaching. Aside from being an enticing introduction, if youre a first time listener its an apt summation of Diggs capabilities as an MC. In a near-robotic fashion, Diggs breakneck vocals start and stop on a dime, with the ability to switch between intricate flows fluently as his sharp, careful diction enunciates each and every word with a precision that demands your attention. Amongst clipping. s organized chaos, Diggs is alarmingly calm and calculated. While his all-too-perfect delivery has been criticized in the past for being monotone and hollow, I think its a perfect match for There Existed an Addiction to Blood s grisly themes as he approaches the macabre with the numbed ease of a seasoned killer. A testament to the trios appreciation of horror media and its history, the following 10 tracks each contain their own concepts inspired by specific films or tropes, but still ultimately come together. Take “Nothing is Safe” for example. A faithful ode to the works of John Carpenter, “Nothing is Safe” features a sparse piano-based instrumental eerily reminiscent of the score to Halloween. Continuing the Carpenter homage, Diggs bases the plotline of the track on a clever reimagining of Assault on Precinct 13, a personal favourite of his. The original film follows a team of police officers tasked with defending a defunct precinct from swarms of gang members in response to brutal police killings. The album, however, puts things in reverse. The protagonists are now
EDIT: Ive made some editing corrections and combined all the sections into one place. Please let me know if you see any other corrections that need to be made and thanks for reading: Lixial ran through the streets, his breathing sacs working overtime, their constant wheezing matching his rapid heartbeat. The night sky overhead was lit up by the scores of vehicles flying through the sky lanes. Monolithic towers rose up into the abyss, rising higher than he could see. Turning a corner, Lixial thundered on, his tiny legs screaming in agony. Two days. For two days hed been on the run and theyd been on his trail at every turn. What had he been thinking? It was foolish and rash to think he could even survive, let alone have a life outside the palace. Shivering, he wished hed brought more practical clothing, but hed had little time. His father would have his agents hunting for him throughout the entire universe, Oligarchical borders be damned. Ducking into an alleyway to catch his breath, Lixial buried his face into his grippers, breathing heavy. He just couldnt take it anymore. The atrocities his father, his people had committed. The slaves, the exploitation of planets. The destruction of entire worlds. It had all been too much for him. He couldnt see it, as a child. But over the years, his eyes were opened more and more, until the overwhelming guilt consumed him. For years hed been a spoilt brat, squandering his opportunity and privilege on flamboyance and indulgence. It appalled him to think of all the pain he had caused, and worse still all the pain he could have tried to stop. He could never stone, but he could try. He just needed to escape hs fathers reach, then he could begin to try and make change. It wouldnt be easy though. As one of the founding races of the Elipsisial Oligarchy, his people had vast amounts of wealth and influence. While some races may have frowned upon their activities, there was little that could be done short of open war between the peoples, and that was something nobody wanted. Switching on his holo-pad, Lixial checked the location. He was close now. If he could just make it to his transport, he would be in the clear. He had enough funds to buy passage out of the galaxy. He could flee to somewhere the Oligarchy and his father couldnt reach him. Pausing to regather himself, he couldnt help but laugh. Whatever happened, hed done something no one else had done for decades. Hed stood up to his father. Hed defied the great ruler of the Inner Systems. Hed done something to be proud of, and it filled him with joy. Chasing this feeling, this sense of purpose, was something he could die doing. Something he would die doing, and soon, he reminded himself, unless he made it to the transport. Pulling his hood down over his face, he slipped into the crowd. As a Nautillian, he had excellent vision, his species large eyes having evolved over thousands of years to hunt in the deep sea. He used that to his advantage, one of the few advantages he had at his disposal. Hed always been frail, and hadnt felt the need to belittle himself with training or working to better himself. Such a stupid child hed been. His own arrogance sickened him to his core. Weaving through the crowds, Lixial slowly approached the transport yard. A poorer, more rundown part of the city, Lixial had never known it existed. He imagined there were many such places like this. Hidden from those who lived in the palace. Spinner Rats screeched at him, their spines raising up like fans from their filthy grey fur. Fluid leaked from their fangs and hatred shone bright in their beast eyes. He shuddered, and tried not to bother them. This was their home, he told himself, much more than his. He buried the other voice that told him the Rats would probably eat him. Gingerly stepping between the destitute and rundown ships, scanning their identification codes with his holo-pad. As much as he wanted to escape, a lot of these “vessels” appeared to view cleanliness as more of Finally, his holo-pad identified the ship. As he approached, Lixial felt incredibly uneasy. Something about this vessel was just off. The shape, the design, it was technology hed never seen. Heavy wings, covered in what looked like weapons of some kind, spread wide from the central body. Blocky and heavy, the main shape was nothing like the smooth sleek vessels of the Nautallins. Checking himself, Lixial shook his head in anger. His pride and attitude were something hed have to correct if he wanted to help people. No one wanted aid from a rich brat. Bringing up the ships specs, he approached the rear entryway. Nervously peeking round one of the stabilizer legs, Lixial looked up the ominous walkway. Shadows obscured his vision, and a dread sense of foreboding warned him against going any further. Yet, if he was to atone for decades of horror, this was his path. Stepping forward, he called out into the darkness. “Uh, hello? My name is Lixial. I arranged passage on this ship. This is The Dolly Parton, yes? ” Lixial hated how frail his voice sounded, but he couldnt control his fear. Before he could call out again, a terrible growling emerged from the bowels of the ship. Lixial fell back in fear, trying to crawl away from the monstrosity that had emerged from the shadows. The access ramp of The Dolly Parton shuddered underneath the weight of the creature prowling down its length. As it fully came into view, Lixial almost relieved himself in the mud. Four hugely muscular legs, each taller than a fully grown Nautillian, ending in wide clawed paws. The beasts body would seem comical if it wasnt so terrifying, slabs of muscle making it look almost as wide as it was tall. A dark shaggy mane grew from its back and neck, course and rigid fur standing up almost like bristles. Its head was enormous there almost no distinction between head, neck and body. The creatures cavernous mouth opened up in a mocking grin, its tongue hanging loose in its maw. Panting, the beast approached even closer, its intelligent eyes peering into Lixials very soul. “Oi! Leave the fucking kid alone ya big brute. ” A scolding, muffled voice yelled from behind the beast. Lixial tore his eyes away from the visage off death to look at whod spoken. He had to warn whoever this was, to get them to flee while they still could. “No, run! I. Ill distract it. You get out of here. ” Lixial almost squeaked the words out. Hed done his best to sound commanding, but again, his fear had bled through into his words. The stranger stepped into view and Lixials heart sank. Now both of them would be killed. “I appreciate the sentiment mate, but I reckon Ill be fine. ” The stranger was laughing now, much to Lixials confusion. Looking at him, Lixial couldnt determine what species he was. The stranger had on clothing the likes of which Lixial had never seen. What looked like combat gear had been repurposed and modified to such a degree that he couldnt trace its origin. A ragged shawl of some kind obscured most of its upper body. Some obvious cybernetic enhancements could be seen on its arms though, with the strangers entire right forearm being a prosthetic. Its face was obscured by some form of mask, and a strange headdress sat atop its head, the tight fitting cloth hugging the strangers dome. His fear and despair rising, Lixial almost choked on his own breathing sac as the stranger softly kicked the huge beast in the rear. It stood almost at the strangers shoulder height, yet he showed no fear. Amazingly the creature didnt attack, but turned to face him, barking sheepishly. The stranger affectionately ruffled the beasts head, then pushed it towards the Dolly Parton. “Back on the ship ya mongrel. And dont shit in the cockpit again! ” The stranger called out after him as turned away from the departing creature, shaking his head. Offering a phalangeal limb to Lixial, the stranger inclined his head. Pulling himself up, Lixial shook his head in awe, his facial tentacles twitching in distress. “What was that? And why did it listen to you? ” Lixial stared at one of the huge paw prints left behind, not even realizing hed spoken. “Mungo? Hes my best mate. Had him since he was a pup. ” The stranger laughed at Lixials confusion. “Hes a pitbull. A dog. My people have been breeding them for centuries. Used to be way smaller. ” “That things your pet? ” Lixial couldnt believe what hed just heard. To willingly breed something like that. Who was this stranger? “Yeah, course he is. Though I reckon hed say its the other way round. Still, hes a good dog. Not many would wanna have a go with him. ” The stranger activated his holo-pad and was scanning Lixial. “Righto kid. Youre the one who booked passage yeah? Where we headed? Pretty strange, last minute request with no destination, but Im not one to judge. ” Forcing himself to focus, Lixial nodded his assent. “Yes, Im the one who booked passage. I need to get out of Oligarchy space as fast as possible. Whatever route and destination you deem safest Ill accept. ” Lixial tried not to reveal too much, but he was desperate at this point. His fathers agents would find him soon, then it would all be over. “Righto, seems pretty straightforward. I got a good route through some of the smaller systems. ” The stranger cocked his head, staring at Lixial for a moment. “Who you on the run from kid? ” Lixial froze. Stammering, he couldnt come up with a story quick enough. After a brief moment of spluttering and half formed words, the stranger laughed, waving him off. “Its fine mate, your business is your business. Lets get on with it, aye? ” With that the stranger grabbed him around and the shoulder and began walking him towards his ship. “Listen kid, I dunno where you come from or what kinda music they got there, but Im gonna introduce you to some of the best tunes youve ever heard. ” Feeling more at ease, Lixial smiled. “Id like that, where exactly-“ A shout from behind interrupted him be
