On July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II. The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Their extraordinary meeting and the two years they spent in one another’s company serve as the basis for an investigation into the nature of human identity, belief, and delusion that is poignant, amusing, and at times disturbing. Displaying the sympathy and subtlety of a gifted novelist, Rokeach draws us into the lives of three troubled and profoundly different men who find themselves “confronted with the ultimate contradiction conceivable for human beings: more than one person claiming the same identity. ” Now a motion picture starring Richard Gere, Peter Dinklage, Walton Goggins, and Bradley Whitford, and directed by Jon Avnet. ANN ARBOR -- Movie-goers can take a deeper dive into the human mind while watching the Ypsilanti-based film “Three Christs” at the Michigan Theater this week. The film, which runs fromFeb. 7-12 at the Michigan Theater, is based on a true story, adapted from the 1964 book “The Three Christs of Ypsilanti” by Milton Rokeach. Set in 1959 at the psychiatric Ypsilanti State Hospital, the book and film, features Dr. Alan Stone who sets out to ensure schizophrenic patients are treated with “empathy and understanding. ” As a result, confinement and electroshock therapy are no longer options for treatment. Actors Peter Dinklage, Walton Goggins and Bradley Whitford star as Dr. Stone’s first study subjects who all believe they are Jesus Christ. The delusions of the three men are discussed in group therapy sessions, with Dr. Stone hoping his empathetic approach works. “Three Christs” was directed by Jon Avnet and was released in 2017. It was premiered at the Toronto film festival’s Gala Presentations in 2017. The original Ypsilanti State Hospital opened in 1930 and served patients until Michigan closed all psychiatric hospitals in 1991. The now demolished building was located at the corner of Platt and Willis roads. According to the Motion Picture Association, “Three Christs” is rated R for sexual content, disturbing material and drug use.
