Computer tycoon Bill Gates, 52, will log-on at work for the last time today as he steps down from Microsoft Corp, which he founded more than 30 years ago. Here we look at the life and times of the world's third richest man and his beloved company... Microsoft's iconic frontman Bill Gates is finally stepping down to devote time to charity work Early years William Henry Gates III, was born in Seattle, Washington on October 28th, 1955, and excelled at school. It was at the private Lakeside school where he programmed his first computer at age 13 and became friends with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Gates and Allen developed a passion for the school's Teletype machine - a typewriter that sent electronic messages down a phone line to a primitive computer at the local university. They spent hours creating basic programmes for it.. Microsoft is born In 1973, Gates enrolled at Harvard College. An article appeared the following year in Popular Electronics magazine about the 'Altair 8800' - a computer developed by a company called MITS. MITS invited readers to develop a programming language for it and Allen and Gates successfully co-wrote a programme for them. In 1975 Gates dropped out of Harvard to focus on his passion for computer software. He set up Microsoft with Allen and by 1976 they were hiring their first staff. In 1978 Microsoft's revenue exceeded £1million and the next year the company moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Seattle. Microsoft made its next leap forward in 1980 when the company was chosen by IBM to create the operating system for its first PC. Microsoft bought the software for $50, 000 from another company and called it MS-DOS. Gates insisted that IBM let Microsoft keep the copyright on the operating system. This would prove the making of the company's fortune. Bill Gates persuaded his old Harvard friend Steve Ballmer to join Microsoft in 1980 as the business manager. Up and running On August 12th, 1981, IBM introduced the first Personal Computer (PC), running on MS-DOS. Two years later Microsoft introduced its 'Word' word-processing program and announced plans to create a Windows operating system. The first version of Windows was duly shipped out in 1985. By this point the company was worth $140million. In 1986 Microsoft's stock went public. On the first day of trading, the share price rose from $21 to $28. The next year a young Texan woman called Melinda French joined Microsoft as a marketing manager. She and Bill started dating. By 1989 Microsoft introduced the earliest version of the Office business software suite. The next year Windows 3. 0 was launched and sold 100 000 copies in two weeks. By 1991 Gates sent out a memo announcing the OS/2 partnership with IBM was over and they would focus on developing Windows. Bill Gates introduced the company's Windows software in 1990 The Federal Trade Commission started to investigate claims Microsoft was monopolising the PC market in 1991. However, the investigation closed two years later without a formal complaint. In 1992 Forbes declared Gates to be the richest man in America, worth $6. 3bn. In 1995 he was declared the richest man in the world - a title he would hold until 2008. Seven years after they first met, Bill Gates and Melinda French tied the knot on the Hawaiian island of Lanai in 1994. She persuaded him to take his second proper holiday in 20 years to China in 1995. They would go on to have three children: Jennifer in 1996, Rory in 1999 and Phoebe in 2002. Birth of the internet Microsoft launched Windows 95 and online service MSN together in 1995. This was followed by Internet Explorer 2. 0, challenging Netscape's Navigator Web browser. Gates was the driving force behind the new online focus: 'I now assign the internet the highest level of importance, ' he told senior staff in a memo. In 1996 Microsoft released Internet Explorer 3. 0 and Microsoft and Apple Computer agreed to share technology, setting aside a long-standing feud. Investigations Bill Gates testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1998. He was asked if his company restricted Internet businesses from promoting Netscape products Netscape asked the Department of Justice to investigate Microsoft's discount to computer manufacturers that installed Internet Explorer 3. 0. in 1996. In 1997 the Justice Department sued Microsoft, saying it violated the 1994 consent decree by requiring computer makers to use its Internet browser as a condition of using Windows. The next year the Justice Department and 20 states sued Microsoft, alleging it illegally thwarted competition. One state later dropped out of the suit. The antitrust trial ran from October 1998 to the summer of 1999. In November U. S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson released his findings labelling Microsoft an 'abusive monopoly'. In 2000, Gates stepped aside as CEO of Microsoft and gave the post to Steve Ballmer although he remained Microsoft chairman. He also took on the title of chief software architect. In June, Judge Jackson ordered the breakup of Microsoft into two companies. The Supreme Court refused to hear Microsoft's appeal of Jackson's decision, sending the case to a federal appeals court. The Court of Appeal overturned Judge Jackson's ruling to break up the company. However, it upheld his ruling that Microsoft illegally used licensing agreements with internet service providers and PC manufacturers to freeze out the Netscape browser. Bill Gates met then Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1997. Mr Gates promised to give advice about bringing computers into schools New directions In 2001 Microsoft launched Windows XP. It also branched out into the gaming console market, launching the Xbox as a direct competitor to Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's GameCube. This was followed by the Xbox 360 in 2005. In 2003, Microsoft announced Windows Mobile for handheld computers and phones. But the company was still dogged by legal actions. In 2004 the European Commission brought an anti-trust action against Microsoft. Microsoft was fined a record $613million by the Commission in 2008 because of the company's failure to comply with earlier anti-trust rulings. Microsoft is currently appealing against the fine. However, Microsoft agreed to pay old ally IBM $775million in money and $75million in software to settle antitrust claims. It then settled with RealNetworks for $761million. In June 2006, Bill Gates announced plans to withdraw from day-to-day duties at Microsoft in July 2008 so he could focus on his charitable foundation. Later that year Microsoft released the long-delayed Windows Vista and Office 2007. The company made an unsolicited offer to buy Yahoo for $44. 6 billion but walked away after Yahoo refused a higher offer of $47. 5 billion. June 27th, 2008 - Gates stepped down from a full-time role in the company although he remains chairman. He plans to focus on charity through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which he has endowed with $29billion. Bill and Melinda Gates married in 1994. They have three children together and a charitable foundation.

I studied fashion right after high school and I pored over magazines and papers over and over again, meditating on and getting inspired by his images. He was such an amazing individual, he made me happy everytime I saw his smiling face. I've watched the doc on him and have looked at it from time to time to get inspired by his dedication to his craft. I never met him but boy did I love this man He'll continue to inspire me for many years to you so much for posting this. May you rest in peace, Bill. We'll never forget you.
