To look at Ashe Spillane’s social media she looks just like any other carefree twenty-something. However, the beauty ambassador who hails from Kerry suffers from the respiratory illness Cystic Fibrosis. The illness comes about as the result of a ‘faulty’ gene which generates a thick mucus which, along with preventing the body from breaking down food, can lead to life-threating lung infections. Ireland has the highest number of incidents of CF in the world with one out of every 19 people believed to be a carrier of the gene. With COVID-19 wreaking havoc across the globe, those with CF including Ashe have been forced to completely shut themselves off, regardless of whether or not they have any symptoms. Pic: Ashe Spillane Ashe grabbed the nation’s attention over the weekend when she condemned those who blatantly refused to adhere to the Government’s social distancing guidelines and were spotted out socialising. Speaking to EVOKE she said: ‘I know a lot of people have this mentality that if they contract it, they’re going to be fine, and it’s great that most people will only have a mild version of this but we need to think about the people around us and that’s what I want people to do, is to consider other people who may not survive this and that’s why social distancing is so important. ’ To put it into perspective, Ashe explains that because her immune system is compromised, catching a common cold or flu can be enough to put her in hospital for several weeks. Ashe’s older brother also has CF while her father who suffers from MS is also self-isolating. It’s up to her mum to keep the household stocked up in an arduous weekly trip which involves wearing gloves and wiping down trollies with Dettol wipes. These are the measures the family must take to ensure their safety and like the rest of us, Ashe has been forced to sacrifice her social life. It’s easy to see why then she finds it frustrating to see people not taking social distancing seriously. Ashe admits that she was ‘delighted’ when the pubs closed ahead of St. Patrick’s Day but still laments hearing about people attending house parties on the day. She also made a point of praising the Taoiseach’s address saying:’I think he did well in addressing the importance of the social distancing, and the staff in the hospitals and you know commending them which is really important as they can’t engage in social distancing. ’ Ashe also spoke out on behalf of those working in supermarkets urging families to stop going shopping together. ‘I see my friends [retail workers]and they’ve said?families are still going in shopping, like the whole family and they’ve asked for just one person to go and not to bring the kids because they have families too and they have parents who are sick. We need to respect them and consider them as well, ’ she says. That being so, she fully accepts that it’s impossible for most people to completely shut themselves away. ‘I think the main thing with the whole social distancing thing, it’s about being smart. People still have to go to work and people still need to use public transport and to be smart about it and try to maximise the social distancing, ’ she says. Ashe has been in self-isolation coming up on two weeks now and is the first to admit that it isn’t easy. The nature of her job has made it impossible for her to work from home. She cannot say enough in praise of her employers Bare Minerals, whom she says have been incredibly supportive and will continue to pay her salary for the 12 weeks while she’s out of work. Ashe has also had to curtail meeting up with friends and even her extended family. ‘All my family actually live around me so generally, we would be in and out of each other’s houses and for them just to be up the road and I can’t go in and visit them, it’s really hard because we’re very close. ’ ‘My nan lives literally across the road from me and not being able to see her, it’s hard. ’ Ashe is lucky in that the remote location of her home up a mountain means that she can still go out for walks. She also makes a point of writing down simple goals to keep the next day ‘productive’ adding that it’s really important to stay mentally productive. She has also turned her hand to gardening, has a skype coffee catch-up planned with a friend for the weekend and neighbour is coming around next week to chat to the family from a distance. For someone coping with so much, she makes a point of asking people to check on elderly neighbours or those living alone by leaving a note and asking if you can get them anything. If Ashe can make those sacrifice surely we all can too.

NEW YORK (CNS) -- The reasons the church continues to honor the Apostle of Ireland more than 1, 500 years after his death shine forth in the film "I Am Patrick" (CBN), a docudrama screening in theaters for two nights only, March 17 -- St. Patrick's Day -- and March 18. Written and directed by Jarrod Anderson, the profile -- subtitled "The Patron Saint of Ireland" -- seeks to debunk many of the myths and legends that have grown up around its subject over the centuries. The goal is to capture who Patrick really was as a man and a follower of Christ. John Rhys-Davies (Gimli in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy) plays Patrick in old age. With his distinctive voice and stately bearing, he brings the patriarch to life as he reflects on his past and writes his "Confession, " laying out the facts about his work to refute the detractors who have arisen during his evangelization of Ireland. Anderson has brought together an impressive array of people to lay out what is known about Patrick. Those interviewed include historians Charles Doherty and Elva Johnson as well as authors Thomas O'Loughlin and Father Billy Swan. They weave a narrative that reveals Patrick for the amazing missionary he was. The exact dates of Patrick's life are not known but the historical consensus identifies him as a fifth-century figure. Probably born in Roman Empire-controlled Britain, he was the son of a deacon, though his father's position was more that of a civil servant than a church leader. Because Patrick (played as a teenager by Robert McCormack) was also expected to enter the civil service, he was taught to read and write. But all the youth's plans for the future came to an abrupt end when he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to their homeland as a slave. In his "Confession, " Patrick describes his descent into slavery as a wake-up call from God. His duties as a shepherd meant that he was in danger from other raiders, but his solitude gave him ample time to reflect on God's goodness. As he came to think of God as a father he could trust, he began to pray and developed a personal relationship with him. One night, Patrick heard a voice urging him to go home, "for a ship was prepared. " Traveling 200 miles through lands where he was constantly exposed to the danger of being recaptured, he reached the coast and found safe passage back to Britain. During all that time, he was not afraid "because he had come to know God. " Unsurprisingly, his family was thrilled to see him. But the Patrick who returned to them was very different from the Patrick who had left six years previously. He followed his desire to become a cleric, first, serving as an apprentice to the local bishop, and then being sent to Gaul (modern-day France) to study theology. In explaining Patrick's journey to ordination, the film falters a bit, failing to clarify the process by which he would have become a priest, and then a bishop in late Roman times. Simply saying that Patrick "worked his way up the ranks to become a bishop, " seems vague and inadequate. The film then fast forwards to the middle of Patrick's life. After a decade in Britain, Bishop Patrick (now played by Sean T. O'Meallaigh), acts on a call from God to return to Ireland as a missionary. Of course, everyone thinks this is a crazy idea because, legally, he would still be considered a fugitive slave. But Patrick insists that it's God's will that he go. And go he does. It's no spoiler to say that Patrick's evangelizing mission was a great success. And the film does a splendid job of detailing just how much of a change it was for the Irish pagans to become Christian. Some back in Britain, however, were uncomfortable with Patrick's efforts and with the way the church was developing in Ireland. Even after decades of work, Patrick still had his critics. It was for them that he wrote his "Confession, " saying that his only motivation in all the preceding years of labor had been "to bring people to Christ. " The live-action and documentary elements blend well, keeping the pace moving along as the story unfolds with the help of Moe Dunford's narration. The actors who portray Patrick at different stages of his life successfully capture the excitement, determination and zeal Patrick consistently displayed. Anderson gives moviegoers an opportunity to view this popular saint as the lover of Christ and proclaimer of the Gospel that he was. His screen biography thus makes especially apt fare for Lent. Perhaps in witnessing the radical way Patrick responded so fully to God's calling, we might take a moment to reflect on how we live out our own vocations. For theater and ticket information, visit:. Ministry organizations did not learn what Patrick knew until the 20th century. By the mid 20th century, missionary organizations realized that forced conversions and dismissal of native culture did not make for permanent or long term (generations after generations) conversions. By then, the gospel was presented in the language of the people, the culture of the people were embraced, the new converts were not isolated from their people, and the people were treated with love and respect. God definitely had to have shown St. Patrick this almost 1500 years before the church realized it. I am patrick trailer. Escape from the slavery From the villain he ran for his life Left the island far behind To study the heavenly might Many lessons yet to be learned But he would return Rise up to meet his fate To cast the druids away Sent from the God above A weapon to teach heathens pray Many worship his name Got his portrait in frame Now listen to me, it is more than a tale In times of rage and fury You are the pride and glory The world is mad it has gone insane When stormy night keeps roaring I hear the spirits calling We'll meet again along the way Saint Patrick's Day Life is a clever path A riddle of Good versus Bad Friends turn to enemies This breakdown makes me so sad All these wars and we never learned Shall he return? Guess it's built on a lie Not a heavenly sign What can I do? I just cry out your name Many worship his name Got his portrait in frame Now listen to me, it is more than a tale.
This tugged something in my heart. There was not a single moment my eyes were off the screen, my ears constantly attentive for each sound, and my heart racing in a beautifully painful nostalgia. Watching this felt like coming home, like this was a place I had not been in so long. Glad she kept the ring ????. Seeing James Arnold Taylor fighting against Obi Wan Kenobi Ironic.
