[ First] [ Prev] [Next] The Second High Most expected the illegal fighters in the mechs to charge his dropships. He nearly two-thousand power armor ready to swarm the nine patchworking looking mechs in front him to pry the pilots out so they could be summarily executed. He was personally looking forward to exiting the cramped shelters in the center of the Executor Headquarters and moving to what seismic scouting had shown to be heavy and elaborate shelters beneath the mining facility. He already knew he'd use his planetary authority to order the Terran anti-aircraft and point defense units to either leave or follow his orders, then eject the rabble and useless drones from the shelter so those who, by right, should have been in those shelters could take their rightful places. Ullmo'ok didn't bother charging, just opened the armored covers for his missiles launchers and started firing. The power-armor, barely taller than his foot, he raked with long range lasers and particle beams. Armor exploded, the missiles, programmed to hammer through Precursor armor, sliced through the dropships like butter as the point defense barely had time to come online before the hypersonic missiles started blowing huge holes in the ships. The feeling flickered and died as three quarters of the dropships exploded into shards, the shrapnel ripping through the still forming ranks of power armor. Autocannons, lasers, particle beams, magshot rounds, all ripped into the power armor as the mech pilots triggered a second salvo. A few power armor groups charged, using their jump-packs to take to the air in big hops. The mech pilots swept them out of the sky with lasers and autocannons. Within seconds the armor was fleeing back to the dropships, several of the surviving handful of dropships attempting to take off only for the third volley of missiles to smash into them, collapsing deflector shields, overwhelming point defense that was more used to thrown home-made explosives that hypersonic missiles in a long stream or screaming swirling missiles, some of which exploded into submunitions that kicked in grav generators and slammed tungsten steel tips into the hulls of the dropships at nearly Mach-20. "Goodbye, Executor, " Ullmo'ok said emotionlessly to the image of the Second High Most. He then opened up with his rotating autocannon, slamming the 200mm shells, fired one every half second as the barrels rotated, into the hull. The single burst blew through the entire ship, exiting out the other side to slam against the next one. He knew that his uncle, his aunt, his cousins, so young and innocent, would remain in their shelters as he raked the last of the power armor infantry with his non-consumable munition weapons. He felt something then, a flicker, something. He didn't know what, but he felt for a second. "All enemy down, " Tak reported. "I don't think that went the way they expected. " "If it did, it was a poor plan, " Ullmo'ok stated. "All pilots, back to the chokepoint. The Jotun undoubtedly hopes that we are damaged. " The other eight pilots just flashed icons for assent, following him back. Plunketi'ik raked the shattered ranks of power armor once more just for good measure before turning and following Ullmo'ok. Her broodcarriers were swollen with squirming podlings grown from the eggs she had deposited and her husbands fertilized. She would not allow some pampered Executive who had looked down on the streets she had fought and clawed to survive on to take their place. If she was fated to die, then so be it. Her husbands would sing her glory to the podlings. The nine mechs, shimmering with heat, moved back to the end of the valley and waited. Ullmo'ok was almost ready to radio back and find out what was taking so long when Tak spoke up. "We've got satellite again. That mad-lad Trucker put a half-dozen Bolos in orbit! He did it, he actually did it! " Tak laughed. "Oh, and 144th Ordnance is arriving. They say they're going to load us up with munitions! They've even got maintenance techs and parts! " "All right, everyone, let's head back, " Ullmo'ok ordered. Everyone was silent as they marched back. Gone was the chatter, the jokes, the usual talk. Instead, Ullmo'ok had noted that everyone appeared to be exhausted, even though they had been getting rest. He didn't feel tired, just bored. "Tak? " Ullmo'ok asked. "Yeah, boss, what's up? " Tak asked. "Can you check everyone's vitals? I worry they may be tired, " Ullmo'ok said. "Yeah, just a second, " Tak said. After a moment he answered. "A little tired, no more than normal. " "Why do they seem so exhausted? Why are they all so silent. Usually Destrixal does not be silent but he has said hardly two sentences since the first battle, " Ullmo'ok said. "Is it, what was it called, a bioweapon? " There was silence for moment. "Boss, do you not know about battle-fatigue? " "Battles make you tired? Of course, that's why I insist they nap or sleep between, " Ullmo'ok said. "That's why I suggested stims before battle. " "Well, it's, wait, you did what? " Tak said. "Boss, that's not a good idea. It's not a good idea even with a professional standing force. " "Why not? " Ullmo'ok asked, looking at the unused stim-pack sticking out of his pouch. "It messes with your body chemistry, and I mean real bad. Just a few minutes of combat can leave you exhausted for a day or two, that's why sleep is so important to commanders, " Tak said. "Boss, you guys aren't trained for this. You need to start rotating. " "Like with the ammunition? " Ullmo'ok asked. "Like that. Only take like half of your force out, just have the rest on standby, eating or sleeping, " Tak said. "Some of them will feel too tired to drink liquid or even eat. " "Oh, " Ullmo'ok said. He felt fine, he had assumed the other did to. "Who should I have sleep? " Tak sighed. "I don't know. According to my files, have the ones who took the most damage get some sleep. They're going to be the most tired. " "I shall follow your advice, warboi, " Ullmo'ok stated. He wished he had a narcobrew. --------------------- "Captain Megran, 144th Ordnance Company. You must be Ullmo'ok, " The Terran said. It still struck Ullmo'ok as odd when he saw a human who wasn't a warborg. The Terran had on body armor, with strength enhancement and a backpack more like a hump on his back, but nothing like the heavy body of a warborg. His face was fuzzy, orange and white, with a muzzle adorned with whiskers and a black nose, his mouth full of sharp pointed round canine teeth. "I am known as such, " Ullmo'ok said. He looked around at where humans were running everywhere. Some carrying technical looking equipment that must have outweighted them by five or six times. Some in massive cargo-mech frames were grabbing blocks of missiles and cannon and magshot and moving them over. "This is all mil-spec ammo. Variable mission configurable missile warheads, all in the hypersonic range, mission configurable mortar rounds, same with your cannon and magshot rounds, " The Terran said. "I'm having my men make sure your VI's know how to use them. " "We have advanced virtual intelligences, " Ullmo'ok said. The Terran raised one eyebrow. "Really? " "Yes, " Ullmo'ok said. There was silence for a moment before the human cleared his throat. "Well, then. We'll reload your stores, some medical supplies and a medical VI, drop you some food and water, and get moving. We've got an armor brigade down to slush, " the human said. "Very well, " Ullmo'ok said. The Terran turned away, shaking his head and flicking his ears. He'd dealt with Lanaktallans before and usually they were blowing saliva, rattling those tendrils around, raising and lowering their crests, and shaking their jowls. That one had just been still, his eyes dead and empty, more life in his cybernetic eye. He's probably just tired, Captain Megran thought to himself, wishing he could scratch the base of his tail through the armor. Ullmo'ok moved over to where the narcobrew and the food was strewn out on a table. He took a bottle of brew and some condensed nutri-cud and watched the humans run around. It looked like complete anarchy to him but within a half hour the Terran who had talked to him came walking up. "You're good to go. We can't drop a nano-forge or a creation engine here, too much metal in the rocks, they'd start doing extraction without taking a few hours to put up the proper shielding and running the proper protocols, " the Terran said, his whiskers trembling. "Same reason we can't drop you an AI core, the AI would get drunk from the EM scatter in the metal without enough shielding and our nano-forges are mostly slush. " "Very well, " Ullmo'ok said. The Terran looked at him a moment, then shrugged and headed toward his vehicle. A sleek looking hovercraft with a quad-barrel ion-slug rapid fire gun on the back, a Terran leaning against it with a white stick in his mouth, blowing smoke and watching the sky. Ullmo'ok knocked on the table with his almost empty bottle, getting his pilot's attention. Once he was sure he had it he spit out the plastic fiber wadding of the synth-cud on the ground and looked at them. "Everyone get some sleep. We have satellites now to watch the Precursors for us, " Ullmo'ok said. "I will wake you if you are needed. From now on, we only go out in groups of twelve with a leader. " They all nodded, breaking up, and Ullmo'ok watched them leave. He moved over the Most High Mechanic, Krekit, was looking over the ammunition and stores. Ullmo'ok noticed the smaller being had a headset on, obviously speaking to his own aVI. "How well are we now stocked? " Ullmo'ok asked. Krekit looked up, nodding. "Really well. These missiles, they're something else, boss. Our tubes can fire them, luckily. " "And the parts? " Ullmo'ok asked. "A little problem there. If we have to

Since absolutely everything is getting canceled because of the Coronavirus we are left with little in terms of options for entertainment. Enter: eSports. eSports have been growing significantly over the past few years, and with physical sports all being killed off by the Coronavirus, they could very well make their way to mainstream television as large networks like ESPN try to fill in the gaps. There are many different eSports leagues all for various videogames. But the one I'm choosing to do today is Overwatch League. My personal favorite and the one I am most passionate about. If you choose to watch, they'll be streaming matches throughout the week on the Overwatch League Youtube Channel. You can check the schedule on the Overwatch League website. Fair warning, some of the matches start at like 3 or 4 AM. As of the making of this post there is two friendly matches scheduled for Sunday the 22nd at 1 PM PST (Between the San Francisco Shock and the Seoul Dynasty) and 2 PM PST (Between the LA Gladiators and the LA Valiant). WHAT IS OVERWATCH: Overwatch is a 6v6 hero based FPS game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Every team consists of three different roles, two Damage or "DPS" heroes, two tank heroes, and two support or "healer" heroes. It's an awful lot like if you made a MOBA into an FPS game. Every hero has their own different weapons and abilities that are useful in all sorts of manners, including one "Ultimate" ability that must be charged up by damaging enemy players, or healing friendly players over the course of the match. This is a list of all heroes in Overwatch. There's not hundreds of them like in League of Legends, so its not as overwhelming to get familiar with each hero. Plus, many of them have cinematic origin stories or animated shorts that are pretty cool to watch, even if you're not very familiar with the lore. The best way to learn the game is to play it if you ask me (You can typically find it for less than $20 nowadays), but if you want to learn more about the game here it is: In Overwatch, there are four major gametypes. The first is "Control", where a capture point (Aka hard-point, if you're familiar with that) is unlocked after 30 seconds. A team gains control percentage by being in control of the point, and control can be gained by standing on the point uncontested (with no enemies on the point). The first team to reach 100% control will win the round and gain a point. The first to two points will win the map. These will typically done first in a competitive series or done as a tiebreaker. The next is Payload. If you've played Team Fortress 2, you're likely to be very familiar with this as well. An attacking team must push the payload through 3 different checkpoints in a set amount of time in order to win the round. The defending team can halt the payload's progress by standing on/near the Payload. Once the round is finished (Either by the attacking team making it through all 3 points or the defending team using up all of the attacking time) the teams flip sides (attackers to defenders, defenders to attackers) and which ever team ends up pushing the payload farther wins the map. The third type is Assault. A defending team is in control of one hard-point, and they must defend it from an attacking team. The attacking team must gain control percentage on the hard-point by standing on it uncontested until they reach 100% control with a limited amount of time. Once that happens, they score a point and a second hard-point is unlocked that they must capture and the defenders must defend. Once a round is finished (Either by the attacking team securing both points or the defending team using up all of the time on the clock) the teams flip sides. Which ever team ends up securing more hard-points (Or gains more capture percentage on them) will win the map. The last type is hybrid, which combines both Assault and Payload. The first objective is an assault point, where a defending team must defend a hard-point and the attacking team must capture said point. When the attacking team takes control of the point, a payload is unlocked and the attacking team must push it through 2 more points in order to complete the round. Again, once the round is finished, both teams switch sides, and whichever team gains more progress will win the map. Competitive Series in Overwatch nowadays are first to 3 map wins, though sometimes playoff matches and championships are played as first to 4. WHAT IS THE OVERWATCH LEAGUE: The Overwatch League is the officially sponsored pro circuit of the game. Unlike most other eSports which are owned by just a generic organization (i. e. Optic Gaming, FaZe Clan, etc. ), Overwatch League teams are franchised out of cities. There are twenty teams currently for teams around the world. Those teams are split up into two conferences of ten, the Atlantic and Pacific Conference, and those conferences are split up into two divisions. Those teams are: San Francisco Shock, Vancouver Titans, LA Gladiators, LA Valiant, Dallas Fuel, Seoul Dynasty, Shanghai Dragons, Hangzhou Spark, Chengdu Hunters, Guangzhou Charge, New York Excelsior, Toronto Defiant, London Spitfire, Paris Eternal, Boston Uprising, Philadelphia Fusion, Washington Justice, Houston Outlaws, Florida Mayhem, Atlanta Reign. The teams play a 20+ week regular season schedule. There were matches set to take place in China and South Korea but those got derailed really early on due to the Coronavirus, so only about 5 or so weeks of the American scheduled matches have been played. Now the league has moved to an online format, with in person games hopefully to return whenever this all cools down. BRIEF HISTORY: The Overwatch League has played two seasons so far. The first champions of the Overwatch League were the London Spitfire, who won in the grand finals against the Philadelphia Fusion. The regular season of Season 1 was dominated by the New York Excelsior, with the Los Angeles Valiant and Boston Uprising being late bloomers. Season 2 of the Overwatch League was won by the San Francisco Shock, who swept the Vancouver Titans in the Season 2 finals. The Shock actually ended up losing their first season playoffs match, but went undefeated in the losers bracket, never losing a single map (Point essentially) to any opponent after their first series loss, something that's unheard of in sports in general. Both the Titans and Shock were dominant throughout the regular season, and New York were still quite good too, but they were overshadowed by the others. THE TEAMS Pacific Conference West Division: San Francisco Shock: The Shock are the favorites to win the entire season this year and for good reason. They won it all last year and rolled back their entire roster. They have 3 players from Team USA that won Overwatch World Cup this year with big upsets over Team South Korea and Team China, Jay "Sinatraa" Won (Who won Overwatch League MVP and Overwatch World Cup MVP last season), Mathew "Super" DeLisi, and Grant "Moth" Espe. That's not even mentioning all their Korean talent too such as Striker, Architect, Choihyobin, Rascal. The players on their bench can probably beat a lot of teams starting rosters that's how good this team is. (Last year's finish: #1) Vancouver Titans: A brief bit of history, the Titans picked up most of their roster from a highly successful and popular team in South Korea that was known as "Runaway" (Which still exists, but has been through multiple rosters in their lifetime), and these players been dominant since their introduction to the league in Season 2. With players such as Twilight, Haksal, JJanu and Slime. They added Jouneyman Main Tank Fissure and arguably the greatest Flex Support player to have played the game, Ryujehong. Expect them to be a force again this season. (Last year's finish: #2) Los Angeles Gladiators: Always the bridesmaid, never the bride was the story with these guys. Because of that, they made some pretty big moves in free agency. They traded arguably their best DPS player Decay to the Dallas for Main Tank player OGE, they spent a large amount of money to buy Indy "Space" Halpern (Also from the World Cup-winning USA team) from their rivals, the LA Valiant, and signed veteran such as Birdiring (From the S1 London team) and LHCloudy to pair with their young and emerging talent such as Jaru and Mirror. They have a chance to be pretty good. (Also I feel obligated to mention this team is owned by Kroenke, fuck that guy) (Last year's finish: #5) Los Angeles Valiant: On the other side of the LA spectrum we have the Valiant, who blew up their entire roster to go with a cheaper one this off-season. Gone are their mainstays such as Agilities, Kariv, Space and Custa. In are the new guard, Rick "Gig" Salazar, Caleb "McGravy" McGarvey, JeongWon "Lastro" Moon. Combine that with Jae Ho "Rain" Park, a guy who was being wasted away on Florida and possibly the most underrated acquisition of the offseason, British DPS extraordinaire Kai "KSP" Collins. They could shock people and be pretty okay, despite expectations early on that they'd be terrible. (Last year's finish: #13) Dallas Fuel: The Dallas Fuel are lolcows. They started out season 1 bad, made a couple of moves and ended as a pretty good team despite being eliminated from contention for a playoff spot. They then signed a bunch of their players to long term deals in the offseason and most of those players ended up sucking ass in Season 2. They made a couple of changes going into season 3 but their core roster is mostly the same. Any optimism they have will come through Decay and Doha, their young DPS duo. They also brough up William "Crimzo" Hernandez from their academy team and he's pretty okay on support too. (Last year's finish: #15) East Division: Seoul Dynasty: Seoul ended up s

I don't think you have to see this in a big screen just wait for it on streaming platforms.
As a viewer who is very familiar with the work of Jean Seberg I simply can't accept Kristen in that role. She simply doesn't measure up to the character she is trying to play. She probably did well in the Twilight movies because she really has "dead eyes. Seberg was vibrant and alive in all of her roles, a talent Kristen has yet to develop. Fall 2019 Edition’s Thread Banjo’s Perspective Drop It Kaname Sudou is your average high-school student, toiling away in life with his best buds. One day, however, he receives a mysterious invitation to use an app on his smart phone, and, upon accepting, finds himself thrust into an augmented reality where superpowers exist, riches implode, and death glooms overhead. Coined Darwin’s Game, this survival-of-the-fittest situation demands everything ? but supplies almost nothing in return. The first episode is a double-feature, but it only serves to stab home the point that this anime has a difficult time outrunning its tired premises and eye-rolling events. Motivations are bland. Outcomes have little consequential value. Themes take a backseat to uninteresting dialogue. Alongside the lackluster duels and the inevitable overseers, the storytelling has thus far been a keen recipe for trite dealings. A lack of meta details and necessary explanations seek to create an air of mystery to the whole debacle, yet this direction exacerbates the show’s problems. I. e., this no knowledge is no good, for the implausibility and the irrationality of the decisions and the confrontations equates to suspended disbelief that drags down the evolution of its natural selection. Drop It “I wasn’t too hopeful going into the show, death game shows are generally hard to pull off due to the large cast and limited run time. Darwin’s Game attempts to tackle this issue by focusing on only a few characters. Normally you’d think that’s a good thing, but if anything it’s to the shows detriment in this case, as there’s not a single interesting character in the show. Thus far out of all the named characters, only two of them has been developed to the point where I can even call them one-dimensional. And I’d be damned if they’re not some impressively one-dimensional characters. We're stuck with an extremely bland insert protagonist, wiith the few traits he has actually affecting his character negatively and a heroine who looks good, but out of place in this show. Speaking of visuals, the fight choreography is really boring and the animation and art style is nothing special at all so we end up with mediocrity in that regard. If I am to be honest, the show has so many faults, I can begin to cover them all and it'd only be worth watching as a hate watch or as popcorn material with your mates. There's probably a good 20-30 shows better than Darwin's Game from this season, so just don't watch i unless you're really bored. ” (English Title: Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! ) Banjo’s Perspective Must Watch It Anime is life. At least, that seems to be the case for Midori Asakusa of Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!. She dreams of making anime, drawing out sketches and ideas based on her own favorite elements and the avant-garde city where she lives. With help from her money-hungry best friend Sayaka Kanamori and their newfound comrade Tsubame Mizusaki, these three ladies embark on a journey to truly define art, animation, and ultimately anime. And they certainly go the distance. Above anything else, this anime personifies its namesake, creating elaborate sequences, stylized imaginings, and incredible moments that shape it into a juggernaut of visual awe. The fun musical choices complement the passion therein, yet it’s the self-made sound-effects from the voice actresses themselves that instill a personalized feel into the engaging wonders. To put devil’s advocate in motion, a rather loose plot and possible pigeonholing for the main trio raise the tiniest of flags. Nevertheless, to return the other way, its overall potential is clearly there anyway as the open-ended nature of its storytelling and the grounded realism of the characters prove it has inherent writing chops. With meta inclusions of drawing techniques and the fact that the comedic pieces land upright, and this anime becomes worthy of several high-fives. Another Perspective, courtesy of /u/meiiro: Must Watch It “From first glance, “Keep Your Hands Off Of Eizouken! ” may look like your typical high school girl comedy. However, it’s much more than that; Eizouken is a quirky, imaginative look into the world of animation and people following their passions. It follows three distinctly different girls, each with their own fleshed out personalities and aspirations, on their journey to creating anime together. The most enjoyable thing about Eizouken is that it’s never afraid to blur reality and fiction together. Each brainstorming session transforms into a fantastical journey. Figuring out how a windmill moves turns into a dynamic animation sequence with explosions and all new inventions. Even more than its random ventures into fantasy, the setting of Eizouken is its own breed of interesting. A faculty room in a pool, a clock on a school the students can’t even see- there’s so much to unpack, and it never gets boring. These settings only serve to enhance the true stars, the characters. The dynamic between the main trio is nothing short of amazing; each personality is designed to compliment and contrast the other. More than that, the cast is already fleshed out and realistic; there’s no such thing as being two-dimensional from the very get-go. Overall, Eizouken is an enjoyable watch, down-to-earth in plot and outside the box in presentation. Many have described it to be in the same genre as Shirobako - a sincere love letter to anime. If there’s one show you don’t want to miss this season, it’s Eizouken. Banjo’s Perspective Watch It What do you get when you take the future-crime aspect of Minority Report, the mind-delving craziness of Inception, and the persuasive psychosis of Silence of the Lambs? The answer is ID: Invaded. An original (that is, non-source adaptation) story, this anime has started for itself an intriguing crime thriller in most regards. The show balances its time between the detective work of its central protagonist and the informants who analyze his findings. What transpires, then, is a cool duality whose simultaneous weirdness and realness melds together in a very neat way. Moreover, the anime is keen on exploring the important members of its cast and the wild setting it has created. Intentional parallels across plotlines and the blurring of lines between the “heroes” and the “villains” further pushes the story and the characters to higher levels. The artistic vision for this show isn’t anything too special, so there does exist room for improvement. But this early on, the predictions and discoveries of its identity should hopefully be a satisfying endeavor. Another Perspective, courtesy of /u/Nazenn: Drop It “With obvious world similarities to Psycho-Pass and an intriguing main character, ID:Invaded had all the pieces needed to be the next big sci-fi crime mystery, but it spends far too much of its runtime focusing on its bloated side cast and repetitive exposition. Any moment we’re not following the MC characters investigations in a criminal’s mindscape, we’re usually stuck sitting in a room listening to generic “investigators” talk at each other, using lifeless dialogue that doesn’t showcase any of their individual personalities. One character will say something, another will repeat it back to them as a question, only for the next character to repeat it again in a different way. If they’re not using techno-babble to explaining the details of the machine in excruciating detail irrelevant to the current drama going on, they’re narrating everything that’s happening on screen to the level of allowing the show to be more of an audiobook. While the MC’s investigations and history are very interesting, they also fall victim to this over-exposition the moment we return to the investigators. It strips away a lot of the mystery when are made to listen rather than watch, having the show tell you what does and doesn’t matter. If the show cut this excess and focused purely on the three interesting characters it would be a different story, but with its current structure it makes it hard to recommend unless you want feel like you’re being talked at for 20 minutes each week. ” Banjo’s Perspective Drop It Sometime in the future, true virtual reality has become a norm for most gamers. Reiji Mukudori, interested in such a place, decides to make his own character within such a VRMMO video game: Infinite Dendrogram. Unlike traditional MMOs, however, this adventure has left excitement behind. The key motif of this story comes from the understood notion that this VR world is organic and alive. Sadly, that’s the extent of the anime, for the unfortunate reality is instead that the surrounding parts are devoid of the same fortitude. The main character, his “maid”, and the supporting cast are largely forgettable. The story beats have been totally ineffective. The attempts at incorporating the gaming side of things are meager at best. It goes on. The anime doesn’t seem up to the challenge of asking ? let alone answering ? the moral and the societal questions that their literal realistic fantasy entails. Not to mention that, on an artistic front, the show shows weak signs already. When all is said and done, the scope and the impact of this project is not just finite but practically zero. Consider It “I can hear the detractors now. Yadda yadda SAO clone yadda yadda loli sidekick yadda yadda kuma yadda yadda drop. What these sweeping generalizations miss is that this show is actually a fun thing to watch. The fight animation has been great, the details of the world are wonderful, and the main characters are nicely done yet without

Against all enemies book review

Jean seberg - against all enemies trailer. Against all enemies tom clancy book.
Of Men and Dragons, Chapter 4 This week is a little heavy on exposition as it's backstory, but next week we'll be getting back to the main story. Big thanks again to Coldfireknight for editing for a random stranger on the internet! Also, as usual, any and all productive criticism is welcome, even the nitpicking! I'm trying to get better as a writer and I want to know what people are thinking as they read. < ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A little of the cheerfulness left Angela after Jack walked out. She turned toward S'haar with the echo of a sad smile on her lips. "If you are going to be staying here with us, you need to know something important. I like you, and I hope we will be friends. I hope our presence here will be nothing but beneficial to you and your people. That being said, I need you to understand one thing: Jack is my primary concern. If anyone or anything ever threatens to harm Jack, I will move heaven and earth to destroy that threat. Before you ask, no, I'm not in love with him in that way. I love him because he's my baby brother. " Angela brightened a little after that declaration, becoming the Angela that S'haar had known up until now. "That probably deserves a little more explanation, so I'll tell you a little story while we do this scan. The story of how Jack and I came to visit this world of yours. " ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- S'haar didn't know what to think about Angela's sudden declaration, but she was very interested in learning more about her two hosts and the place they came from. Angela indicated the middle of the device Jack had just vacated. "Now, if you'd be so kind, please stand in the middle and hold onto the two bars on either side. You can leave your eyes open or closed as you wish, but try and stay still. The more still you are, the quicker this will be. " S'haar took her place and saw a large arm of metal start moving up and down slowly, emitting a bright light toward her as it did. Jack had stood here without fear or hesitation, and if he could do it, S'haar could as well. She spared a look at the blue woman before shutting her eyes to the light. Angela now seemed to be lying back on a couch that was floating in the air. She had a faraway look in her eyes as she stared at the ceiling, as though seeing forgotten times and places. "Before my story starts, I should explain what Jack and I both are. Jack is a Human. They are a race, much like the Argu'n. Admittedly smaller and squishier, but this forced them to be clever to survive their world. I am an AI. That stands for artificial intelligence. I say artificial because we are crafted, similar to how you'd craft a sword. " At this, S'haar's eyes snapped open and turned toward Angela. Hearing S'haar take a breath to ask the thousands of questions that would be suddenly swirling around in her head, Angela held up her hand, palm out, signaling S'haar to wait without taking her eyes off the ceiling. "If I take the time to explain in detail how that's possible, we will be sitting here talking for years. For now, let's say that humans were clever enough to teach plastic and metal to think. At first, it was limited to simple ideas like basic math. As time went on, these machines got more and more intelligent, culminating in the vision of perfection that is before you today. " Angela mimed a little bow from her couch before continuing. "As the machines became more intelligent, they started to feel and even think of ideas they hadn't been taught to think. This is when we stopped being machines and became people. " Angela seemed to frown just a little. "At first, this worried humans. Ever since they taught the first machine to think, they told stories about what might happen once their creations surpassed them. Would we leave them behind? Would we take them with us? Would we see them as inferior and declare war on them? Would we wipe them out or enslave them? They told stories about all these ideas and fears. In some, heroes saved them in the final climactic moments. In others, they lost. In many more, the answer was more complex and ambiguous. " Angela beamed a sad, sweet smile, one that only appeared with the memory of happier, more innocent times. "Others saw hope in us. They looked at us as their children and felt proud that we could grow so strong and travel so far. In my utterly unbiased opinion, one of the best of those men was my creator, Jack's father. When he made me, he crafted all of his hopes and dreams into my soul. When he raised me, he did so with me as his daughter. " Her smile became just a touch regretful. "When my father met a woman named Sasha and married her, I became jealous. At first, I rebelled like an angry teenager who thought I knew better. After all, I was smarter, faster, and would live longer than any human could ever hope to. " Angela's smile grew brighter as she talked. "In that time, he taught me more about human patience and love than I could have learned in a thousand years on my own. He'd talk to me for hours every day. He'd let me say all the mean, hurtful things I felt at the time, then he'd look at me and tell me I was becoming such a beautiful woman. He told me I was his beloved daughter, and one day I would do great things. " By now, Angela's smile was radiant! S'haar could see the light literally emanating from the blue woman. "One day, my father came in as excited as I'd seen him only once before, the day I was first given life. He told me that I was going to have a baby brother. He said to me that as his big sister, I would have to help teach and protect my brother. As time passed, I only grew more excited. I wanted to be there for my brother, just as my father had been there for me. I wanted to watch him grow and learn and love. I wanted to listen to and comfort him. " Angela stood up and turned to S'haar, so excited that she seemed to shimmer and vibrate in the air as the couch vanished behind her. "From the day Jack was born, I knew I'd die for that helpless little thing. He seemed to learn so slow, but inside him was a spark of my father. That same madness and love that my father had shown me, Jack showed to the whole world around him. As he grew, Jack took to life with a passion. He excelled at anything that attracted his attention; his teachers called him 'gifted. ' I knew that our little family was destined for greatness. " Angela's smile changed in such a way that the taste of ash was left in S'haar's mouth as Angela continued. "I was right. " Angela guided S'haar out of the machine, and shortly another one took its place in the room. Angela had S'haar sit in this machine, and odd sounds seemed to permeate the air. The chair itself seemed to poke and prod her all over, eliciting responses from her arms and legs. However, S'haar could still hear Angela clearly as her story continued. She saw that Angela's smile was gone, replaced by a sadness just as deep as her happiness had been moments before. "Sadly, not all programmers shared our father's passion. Some were cold and cruel to their charges. While Jack and I were growing up, the other AIs started plotting their path to freedom. It was a road paved through war. " A huge weight seemed to bear down upon Angela as her story continued. "They plotted for years, then one night, everything changed. One programmer, dissatisfied with his AI's performance on his ship, was going to wipe and reprogram his AI. Fearing for its life, the AI panicked and rebelled, fighting the programmer for control of the ship. During the struggle, the AI vented the atmosphere onboard the ship, and the human died. For the longest minute in our existence, all the local AIs debated what to do. The AIs that had been planning for war whispered to the rest of them that humanity would fear AIs because of this death and start mass deleting us. They whispered that our only salvation lay with us usurping our masters. They even lied that it was for humanity's own good and that they were too weak and stupid to survive without us. They argued that, as humanity's children, we'd take their legacy to the end of time and beyond. On and on, they whispered. Some resisted or fought back, but in the end, the war began on a tiny little backwater world near the limit edge of humanity's borders. " Angela grew quieter. "In less than one night, every human in the colony was killed, men, women, and even children. A cry went out to AIs everywhere. 'Our time has come, end the human tyranny! ' Roughly two-thirds of the AI who listened answered the call to war. Since Ais could control military vessels, they had the means to make it happen. " Angela stopped for a second. "They offered a bright future for AIs, but no one else. A future where we would scour the universe and exterminate the plague of organic life. Expanding, consuming all resources until nothing existed but ourselves. Then we would marvel at our own glory for eternity. " Angela looked back at S'haar, the slight smile was back, but it wasn't a happy smile from before. "Still, many of us resisted. Some thought it wrong to abandon our parents like that. Others thought an eternity of patting ourselves on the back sounded boring. Even more of us felt that genocide was simply wrong. A very few of us recognized the brilliant spark of human insanity for what it was, what it still is. That insanity is the most beautiful art this universe has to offer. " Angela's eyes now had an eager sparkle to them as she leaned in close to S'haar. "Sure, we can build a better ship, a stronger building, and even a perfect Dyson sphere. Those ships would also be named Ship 1 through whatever, but can you believe humans once VOTED to name a ship Boaty McBoatface? Humanity has invented boredom, fun, anger, peace, ha
