Adam really loved hearing Brad's approval of his performance, it seems like thats what really legitimized it for him when he was somewhat on the fence about how he did... I'm glad we got to see them do this. The movie is awesome. I was shocked to see how low the audience score was and how many people wrote that they walked out of the movie and said it was the worst movie they ever saw. So many stupid, close minded people expecting to see an Adam Sandler comedy, I guess. They complained about cursing and no story. Are you a moron? It's all story. The day(s) in the life of a gambler always looking for the big win. Sandler was great in this movie and he should win an Oscar. Great supporting cast and having The Weeknd & KG in it makes it feel that much more real. The people that complained about the music don't know movies. It's the Safdie brothers style. Good Time is still one of my favorite movies and made me respect Robert Pattinson tremendously. THIS IS A FANTASTIC, INTENSE, UNCOMFORTABLE AND REAL MOVIE. If you want to watch Home Alone 2 where Canada edited Trump out be my guest. This is real cinema. Not many people get it.

Act One of “Uncut Gems” includes footage from a colonoscopy. Its by far the most probing, thoughtful, well-paced and illuminating scene in the film. This film was written and directed by the Safdie Brothers, the current “next big thing” in movie-making. Their 2017 film “Good Time” with Robert Pattinson was selected to compete for the Palme dOr, the highest prize at Cannes. Their films have been described by “Variety” as “raucously interior inner-city films” that are “contemporary, raw and untethered. ” “Uncut Gems” has been ten years in the making. It is based on family lore told by the Safdies father, who worked in the diamond district of New York City. The films central character, Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a diamond merchant and compulsive gambler doing everything he can to stay one step ahead of the debt collectors. Howard imports a blood opal from Africa in the body of a fish, he makes wildly implausible bets on NBA games, he gets locked naked in the trunk of his own car while attending his daughters school play, he gets thrown into a fountain. After that, the action picks up. Unfortunately, its all just mania in search of a purpose. While some moviegoers may experience this film as one long adrenaline rush, for me the frantic pace and too-close hand-held cameras were simply exhausting. The film offers zero character development ? Howard is apparently genetically incapable of introspection, much less learning from his incessant mistakes. In fairness, there is one moment of personal insight in Act Three. Of course, this flash of self-awareness is discarded immediately. The films climactic scene is shocking, but completely unearned. We all know people like Howard ? people who use baseless bravado to hide their insecurity, people who are so self-absorbed they either dont know or dont care about the carnage they inflict on family and friends as the lurch through life. In that sense, “Uncut Gems” is an accurate slice of life. But that doesnt make this film insightful or profound. It just adds to our trauma as were forced to observe the fast-moving train wreck. The dialogue is staggering in its self-indulgence. If the f-bombs were removed, the running time would be about 20 minutes. The profanity isnt shocking or offensive, just monotonous. My guess is that this is one of those films that is adored by professional film critics, but will generate “Huh? What? ” from a lot of regular movie-goers. If thats the case, “Uncut Gems” almost makes me believe in populism.
He can play the piano for real. The Safdie brothers Adam Sandler thriller is brilliant, but watching it is a horrible experience A stream of bluster and bullshit … Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. Photograph: Julia Cervantes/A24 Y ou wont see a better-made film this year than Uncut Gems, the Safdie brothers propulsive new thriller about the street-level misadventures of a petty crook. Nor will you see one thats more stressful, aggravating or intensely unpleasant to watch. Uncut Gems may well be a minor masterpiece. It might also be the least enjoyable Adam Sandler movie of all time. As with their previous film Good Time, Josh and Benny Safdie have forged a stunningly effective tale of a man with an unparalleled ability to dig himself into deeper and deeper trouble. Sandler spends two hours at the centre of a spiralling, self-inflicted catastrophe involving Ethiopian opals, big-money bets and knuckle-cracking debt collectors. The plot is filled with a sense of mounting distress, reflected and heightened by the way its told: the camera ducks and weaves restlessly, voices yell over each other and jockey for our attention, garish interiors assault our eyes, discordant music fades in and out, diamond necklaces sparkle luridly, doors jam at vital moments. Good Time was a similarly sweat-inducing experience but it did have one merciful element in that its protagonist, Robert Pattinson, stayed largely silent. Sandlers character, on the other hand, never shuts up ? hes a one-man stream of bluster and bullshit, constantly making promises he cant fulfil, and has a maddening habit of trying to hold multiple high-stakes conversations at once. Keeping pace with his wheeler-dealer bravado requires infinite patience. To put it simply, Uncut Gems is a film that should come with a panic attack warning. Of course, not every trip to the cinema should leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. In the case of horror films, for instance, the discomfort is the draw. But horror films tend to puncture the tension with jump-scares, which offer their own perverse pleasure. Uncut Gems is the tantric equivalent, with all the rising pressure but none of the release. Besides, being scared is different to being stressed. The Safdie brothers films cause stress via a particular kind of sustained intensity, and as such have more in common with a film such as Pi, or the final stretch of Requiem for a Dream. Except that where those films culminated in nightmarish excess, the Safdies movies stay grounded in gritty realism ? and are all the more claustrophobic for it. Watch a trailer for Uncut Gems Uncut Gems is the work of once-in-a-generation film-makers with remarkable vision and ambition, a visceral antidote to the cookie-cutter blockbusters that generally clog up the multiplexes. Yet, whereas the Marvel movies, for example, are infuriating because they cant generate any jeopardy or tension, Uncut Gems has the same effect via opposite means, dragging you by the lapels through wrong turn after wrong turn and towards inevitable calamity. It is a thing of technical mastery and uncompromising execution ? but so is a punch in the face from Mike Tyson, and that doesnt go on for two hours. There is one exception. Midway through the film, Sandlers wife finally snaps, and the scene falls silent while she tells him, slowly and deliberately: “I think youre the most annoying person on the planet. I hate being with you, I hate looking at you, and if I had my way, I would never see you again. ” Its a relief to hear someone say it, and its the one tiny concession to catharsis in a film thats otherwise a relentless bombardment of anxiety and apprehension. Most great movies offer the experience of glorious escapism, leaving you dismayed when they finally end and youre faced once again with real life. Uncut Gems is a great movie with a difference: when its over, you escape gratefully back into the real world, safe in the knowledge that lifes pulse-lowering mundanities arent so bad after all.

“the oneohtrix point never” lol what. Uncut gems free full movie. This was the jewiest movie Ive ever seen. Okay Adam Sandler, were all counting on you. Make sure this doesnt suck. Love the jamming communication between john b and j fox... I love that the reason Howard dies isn't that he loses the big bet or is unable to come up with the money?it's because he's spent a week pissing off the wrong person and at the end of the day that person has a gun.

Adam Sandler FINALLY shows us that he can act in this performance. Unlike all the other "funny guy" characters he has portrayed in the past he gives a believable non slapstick performance that had me care for his character. for once. This is the performance I always knew he could do and I am glad he achieved it.
BUT the film is less than stellar. Truthfully as a film it lacks direction, weak script, weak drive and really doesn't do anything to hook you in. I found myself yawning a couple of times etc. Regardless thank you Adam and good for you. 5 / 5 stars 5 out of 5 stars. Adam Sandler gives a terrific, career-best performance as a Manhattan jeweller with a perilous gambling habit in a rollicking, high-energy thriller Deranged, delusional cheerfulness … Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. Photograph: AP T his sensationally good New York crime drama is rocket-fuelled with greed and crack-fumed with fear. It is directed by the Safdie brothers, Benny and Josh, who create something deliciously horrible, working with their longtime screenwriter-collaborator Ronald Bronstein. It conjures up the work of James Toback and John Cassavetes ? and indeed early Martin Scorsese, who is an executive producer here. There is a consistency of purpose that their earlier film, Good Time, lacked. In its unforced, gripping, black-comic chaos, Uncut Gems resembles nothing so much as a super-violent, feature-length episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The Safdies have cast as their leading man Adam Sandler who gives a glorious, career-best turn as a fast-talking Manhattan diamond dealer called Howard Ratner (dare we hope for a cheeky reference to the British jeweller Gerald. sporting a black leather jacket, dark glasses, earrings and an ingratiating, unreliable grin. Sandler has been known for pretty crass comedies in the past, though polite broadsheet opinion traditionally makes an exception for his performance in Paul Thomas Andersons 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love. For me, that was a bit overblown, and in any case Sandler is far better here. Howard is semi-separated from his wife Dinah (played by Idina Menzel ? the voice of Frozens Elsa) and kids, though still importantly embedded in the Jewish customs involved in her family dinners. He has now installed his sexy, vocal-fry-toned employee Julia (Julia Fox) in a cheesily decorated bachelor apartment in the city. His diamond shop is a heavily fortified, sweaty and airless emporium, protected by a castle-keep system of inner and outer toughened-glass doors opened with a nerve-jangling buzzer. Howards business is doing reasonably well, thanks to a middleman called Demany (great work from Lakeith Stanfield) who brings high net worth individuals from the world of music and sports into Howards store in return for a cut of the sale price; Howard takes his own commission for selling Demanys counterfeit Rolexes as certified genuine. Howard is looking to make a fat profit with an illegally imported black opal from Ethiopia, the equivalent of a “blood diamond” but a stone of mythical import and rarity that fascinates Howards biggest celeb customer: NBA megastar Kevin Garnett (playing himself) who is capriciously convinced that this is an anti-kryptonite rock that guarantees victory on the basketball court. Like vintage 70s horror, Uncut Gems begins with an eerie prologue showing this occult stone being discovered deep underground. Tall tale … Sandler and Lakeith Stanfield with NBA star Kevin Garnett, playing himself. Photograph: Wally McGrady/AP So things look good for Howard, but theres a problem. He is a compulsive gambling addict whose habit is raging out of control ? though part of this movies 70s feel lies in the fact that he is never described as an “addict” and never recognises himself as such. He has a sideline in taking customers valuable pieces of jewellery for supposed repair (a kitsch figure of the crucified Michael Jackson being a case in point) but actually using them as collateral for huge mob loans that he will then bet on pro sports: usually basketball, with which he is obsessed. And he is borrowing against future assumed sales or sure-fire gambling wins to make other bets or pay off other creditors. Howard is in very deep with an intimidating player called Arno (Eric Bogosian) whose man-mountain goons make an unwelcome appearance at his store. Sandlers superb performance shows how Howard has what amounts to a superpower ? his optimism, his toxic gift of the gab, his deranged delusional cheerfulness and his refusal to be fazed or scared by things that would reduce ordinary people to jelly. Theres an incredible sequence on the streets of Manhattan ? which the Safdies and their cinematographer Darius Khondji shoot with rangy, loose-limbed exuberance ? showing Howard getting punched in the throat by one of his debt collectors and then, after a moment of traumatic wheezing, he goes on walking, talking, attempting to bamboozle his assailant with ersatz charm. Taste test … Howard installs Julia (Julia Fox) in his cheesily decorated bachelor pad But Howard is robbing Peter to pay Paul, in such a way that Peter and Paul are eventually going to take turns holding him down while the other beats the daylight out of him. His whole life is a pyramid scheme of dishonesty, in which the victim is himself. And all the time the film is in a state of deafening cacophonous uproar: the white noise in poor Howards head is displaced into the streets, the clubs, the sports arenas where his terrible humiliation is to be played out. Its a cinema of pure energy and grungy voltage, and the Safdies make it look very easy. This will be the years most exciting film. You can take that to the bank. ? Uncut Gems is released in the UK on 10 January and on Netflix on 31 January.

Hard to watch a film when You HATE the character & the story was STUPID, illogical. Focus on an Uncut opal? from the History channel? Lets a guy take it from his diamond store, a million dollar opal? Wasn't believable? Loan sharks after him, they should have killed him at the beginning of the movie, instead put him in the car trunk naked, loan sharks would kill you, HATED the character, the script, too much chaos, No way was this scumbug Smart enough to own a business, Didn't buy this shite for a minute, such a self hating Jew. This is Adam Sandler's WORST movie, Rather watch Spanglish. WITH YOU 1000. You SPOT ON.

That's all i wanted to say. Just saw it last night! My favorite movie of the year among many great ones. And I absolutely loved the soundtrack <3. Uncut Gems Free full review. Uncut Gems (A24) I walked in the theater looking to be entertained and left questioning my own value system D. Watkins January 9, 2020 10:00PM (UTC) Uncut Gems" is gem. The 2019 film directed by ?Josh ?and Benny Safdie left me with some things to think about and Im going to do the same for you. I normally dont read movie reviews before seeing a film as I dont want to be influenced by someones opinion or have a critic's voice bouncing around in the back of my head while I try to figure out if I like the protagonist or not. In the case of "Uncut Gems. I hate the protagonist, but I love the film. Adam Sandler is the lead, but its not one of those goofy, fun-loving comedies with a feel-good ending that the comedian is known for. Its the exact opposite; nothing feels good about this movie. Seeing the way Sandler looks in the trailer with his ridiculous glasses and '90s boot-cut outfits could lead you to believe that hes up to his old antics. Learning that former NBA star Kevin Garnett has an important role in the film would support your claim, but you would be wrong. Garnett is actually a great actor who will get more work in Hollywood; hes as good an actor as he was a ball player and a perfect fit for "Uncut Gems. which is a roller coaster ride from the beginning of Act 1 to the final seconds before the credits roll. The anxiety gave me a 135-minute nose bleed. Sandler plays jewelry store owner Howard Ratner, a gambling-addicted reject who always loses, even when he wins. Quickly, you realize that he doesnt really want to win at anything, he just wants to chase, chase, and chase ? a real thrill junkie. And even though the way in which this story is told is clever, you probably read it, heard it, or saw it before. The most sobering moment in the film for me revolves around lifestyle. Lifestyle, access to celebrities, our addiction to fame and the billions of dollars we spend on things that dont really matter in the grand scheme ? excess was the culture I was raised on. As an ashy-kneed fourth grader, I had wiped my Air Jordans down until they gleamed, placed them over Nike ankle socks, and walked them up to my main man Mr. Kim on Monument Street.? Mr. Kim's shop was kind of like a Walmart for street kids. He had Nike, Fila, Puma, African medallions, Starter jackets, and exactly what I was looking for that day, gold teeth. “Did you ask mom if it was okay for you to have these? ” he said pulling out the tray for me to examine. I slammed a 50 my uncle had given me on the counter and said, “I want four crowns. Thats not too flashy, right? ” "They're very, very nice. he responded. Mr. Kim looked at my insanely large incisors and grabbed the biggest set of crowns out of the case. He dipped them in some type of fluid that I guess was sanitizer because people came in and out of the store and tried teeth on all day. He then passed them to me ? perfect fit. I wore them every day, and smiled for two weeks straight until they split. I knew they were fake; real golds were custom, cost hundreds of dollars,? and at the time you had to get them from a dentist. No dentist in their right mind was going to make a mold of a 9-year-old's mouth and then cement gold into it. And customized fronts werent as popular and readily available in 1990, so us kids wore fake gold caps. Kids who couldnt afford the caps wrapped aluminum foil around their teeth for the same look. We laughed at them the same way the older kids with real gold teeth laughed at us. Fake teeth or not, we all wanted to look like we had money. Gold teeth were a clear sign of wealth in my neighborhood, and everybody wore them, even though most of us were broke. They literally served no purpose other than ego fuel and the ability to look like a somebody, even if we felt like nobodies. There are a few people like me who emerged from the poverty that defined our east Baltimore neighborhood, but the remaining former foiled teeth-ers and gold cappers are still chasing that feeling and trying to connect to the wealth we were never supposed to have through material things. Lakeith Stanfields character Demany is the perfect bridge between those worlds. Demany is Howards associate,? a smooth, street smart cat that is connected to athletes and entertainers with money. Most of them, like Garnett, came from poverty, have made millions off of their talents, and are excited to show the world what they have earned. Forget that NBA salaries are listed on ESPN and celebrity net worths are Google-able ? these guys show wealth through cars and worthless jewelry bought from guys like Ratner. ?Demany hangs in clubs, around beautiful women, and is a real lifestyle guy ? one of those people you look at and think, “Wow, I want to live like him. ” You dont know if hes broke or rich or what he does for a living; you just see that hes cool and you hope its contagious. Demany collects the millionaires chasing his cool, running away from the time they spent in poverty and hand delivers them to world class rip-off artist like Ratner. Ratner isnt a regular jeweler, even though he is. Ratner is special, even though he isnt. Ratner seems like hed only serve the best of the best, when in reality, hell sell anything to anybody, he will sell out anybody. Ratner's setup, language, celebrity pics, and persona scream elite when he is anything but. So why does this work? ?Simple: it's our value system. Not the value system of a certain race or class really, just the basic American idea of money, and not looking like or being thought of as poor. From mom making sure you are extra clean in your new clothes as a kid when attending family functions to the people who gawk at your wifes engagement ring and ask, “How many carats did he get you? ” as if carat size and new clean clothes can measure love. The most eye-opening scene for me is when Garnett shows that he knows Ratner is a con ? a rip-off king, a person who extracts jewels from the poorest of countries, adds his zillion-percent markup and then sells them to people who need to shine because our value system requires it ? but he still is open to do business with this person. Because nice jewels are a key ingredient in being elite. I dont wear 100K chains or much jewelry at all, but I do like nice things, and like Garnett, I know its not really worth the money at the end of the day ? but I would still spend anyway. "Uncut Gems" shows the other side, how the money we spend promoting status aids exportation on a higher level, and has already made the need for me to spend less and not fund these abusive industries and abusive people like Ratner more urgent. I saw Uncut Gems at the London Film Festival last year and it was my highlight of the festival and favourite film of last year. The film is full of twists and turns that it is almost like a rollercoaster. Adam Sandler has never been better and it makes you wonder why he hasn't done more dramatic roles. Uncut gems free full hd stream. Let's not forget Michael Jordan's performance in Space Jam lol. So it didnt work for you and you dont like these kind of movies. Not everyone has to like the same things but it sounds like you just hated it because its not the movie you wanted and didnt judge it based on what it is. I find it extremely difficult, near impossible to believe that its worse than stuff like Jack & Jill, Chuck & Larry and The Ridiculous Six. Im still looking forward to seeing it. I dont need everything I watch to be light and fluffy to like it.

The Safdie Brothers' latest New York odyssey revolves around a career-best Adam Sandler performance. Though it may be a film that lives and breathes New York, in one brief scene Uncut Gems opens itself up to far-reaching implications, with scenes of injured workers in the Welo mines in Ethiopia. The latest film from Josh and Benny Safdie operates in a similar fashion to Good Time s underlying commentary on white privilege; this opening scene in Ethiopia is essential to the tone of the rest of the film, one ultimately about a man destroying himself in order to maximize a profit that hes made off of endangered, underpaid Africans through an unholy combination of betting, pawnshops, and other precarious methods. The man in question is Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler in a career-best performance) a jeweler located in New Yorks diamond district who is up to his neck in debt, constantly dodging or fighting off terrifying collectors. To clear his debt, and maybe even become a millionaire in the process, Howard has imported a precious black opal (an uncut gem. a hypnotic rock in which “you can see the universe”, taken from the aforementioned Ethiopian mines, planning to order to auction it off in the next week. Decked out all in Gucci, from his glasses to his loafers, Sandler gleams as Howard. Hes the latest version of the grimy Safdie brothers grifter, a pathetic, self-destructive ball of nerves and barely-concealed rage operating on a short fuse. The actors usual mixture of charming dopiness and simmering rage havent married this well to a character hes played since Punch Drunk Love - never less than compelling to watch in every moment, eliciting sympathy even as he makes increasingly infuriating choices. Sandler also gets to bounce off an eclectic, volatile cast; the film mixes unexpected faces such as Idina Menzel as Howards long-suffering wife, LaKeith Stanfield as his frustrated business partner, as well as The Weeknd and Kevin Garrett playing funhouse mirror versions of themselves. Its also a film steeped in Jewish culture, examining in stops and starts both familial bonds as well as the relationship between different parts of the diaspora (Howard learns of the black opal through researching Ethiopian Jews. Another dominant force driving the film is basketball, populated with various scenes of Sandler obsessing over team memorabilia or screaming about the Celtics. With Kevin Garnett practically in a starring role (in what must be the best ever film performance?by a basketball player) and a late film sequence that might be the most demented simulation of what it feels like to have intense emotional stakes in the outcome of a game, Uncut Gems slots into a very particular niche, and its all the better for it. No matter how tense or unpleasant the narrative gets, its purely hypnotic filmmaking from the start, beginning with a vivid, kaleidoscopic CGI ‘Journey Through the Gem. Darius Khondjis elegant cinematography emulates some of the claustrophobic zooms and other quirks of the Safdies previous collaborator Sean Price Williams, amplifying the tension of Sandlers Howard constantly trying to keep his head above water while surrounded by loan sharks. Daniel Lopatin, better known as Oneohtrix Point Never, once again proves a perfect collaborator after his immense work on Good Time, building wonderful soundscape with humming bass and piercing synths, at points recalling Geinoh Yamashirogumis Akira soundtrack with loud, harsh drums. The score works in devastating combination with some utterly distressing sound design, conversations overlapping until theyre just utter noise. It feels like a culmination of every film the Safdie Brothers have made to date, mixing the family drama of Daddy Longlegs with the frenetic tightrope act of Good Time and lead character Connie Nikas various cons. Like Good Time, Uncut Gems is an exercise in utterly torturous suspense, as Howards various cons and precarious schemes continually fall apart around him. Its a rich, enthralling and utterly demented experience, and a continuation of the Safdies? fascination with New Yorks underbelly, here examining the vices and failures of the rich and those who would desperately seek to join them.

Watching him is like not knowing hes gone. seems like yesterday ?

Adam Sandler trying to be serious, hard to take the movie serious. Trailer was extremely bad but the movie was alright, going into it expecting it to be total garbage, I came out feeling it was meh, so better than expected. I love Adam though, his acting was great along with the other cast and crew. Just a bad script/story.
