After a young mother learns that she can stop a young boy from being murdered in the past, she does everything she can to help him. However, altering his timeline causes irreparable damage to her own. Can she fix everything and get her now missing daughter back, in this shocking Spanish-language drama? MIRAGE: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: Directed by Oriol Paulo, Mirage tells a story of how time travel and good intentions can go awry. Twenty-five years ago a young boy named Nico (Julio Bohigas-Couto) was murdered during a 72-hour storm after witnessing a man kill a woman. Nico’s tragic and untimely death has haunted his friends and loved ones for years. So when a modern day Dr. Vera Roy (Adriana Ugarte) finds a way to communicate with the past version of Nico using an old VHS, she does what any reasonable person would do. She tries to save this little boy’s life. Ultimately she succeeds, but altering the past comes with a massive toll on her present. After telling Nico about his fate, Vera wakes up in a parallel timeline. She’s now no longer a nurse, but a doctor. Her husband David (Álvaro Morte) is a stranger to her. And her beloved daughter Gloria no longer exists. Vera has 72 hours to fix what she’s broken and convince Inspector Leyra ( Chino Darín) that she’s not insane. Yet as she continues on this journey, she starts to wonder which of her two timelines is real? What Movies Will It Remind You Of? :? Mirage does an excellent job of blending authentic-feeling parental pain with its sci-fi elements, similar to the Toni Colette scenes in The Sixth Sense. There are also some similarities to be drawn to Stranger Things, though Mirage is far less dependent on ’80s nostalgia. Performance Worth Watching:? Adriana Ugarte steals this film, which shouldn’t be a surprise if you’ve seen her work at all. The movie makes it clear what the stakes of this sci-fi thriller are, but it’s Ugarte’s panicked performance that sells the movie’s drama. Her subtle and shell-shocked search for her daughter is up there with Sandra Bullock’s Bird Box freak-outs. Memorable Dialogue: The use of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” should be eye-rollingly on the nose, but it works surprisingly well throughout this film. The night he was murdered, Nico recorded himself performing an acoustic version of “Time After Time. ” It’s this video that allows Vera to communicate with Nico in the past. Hearing him quietly sing “Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick / And think of you” while a shocked Vera realizes this is a portal into the past is deeply creepy. It’s a moment that feels eerily reminiscent of the first time the tape is played in The Ring. Single Best Shot: This one goes along with the movie’s most memorable dialogue. The moment when the camera shifts from looking at Vera’s television in the present to Nico’s television in the past is unnerving. Especially since both Vera and the audience know that Nico will be dead minutes later. Sex and Skin: There’s one sex scene between Vera’s husband from the first timeline David and his current wife. However it’s pretty chaste. You could easily watch it with kids in the room and not feel completely embarrassed. Our Take:? If you analyze anything about Mirage too much, it starts to fall apart. The time travel dynamics don’t make much sense, and the film’s two final twists land somewhere between cliche and and expected. However, Mirage isn’t meant to be a strict look at sci-fi. It’s a movie about one desperate mom trying to bring back her daughter no matter what the personal cost. It’s a highly emotional drama, and Ugarte’s performance more than delivers. Our Call: Stream it for sure. It’s a good thriller helmed by a great actress. Watch Mirage on Netflix.
