Thats how a trailer should be. Intriguing, but leaves you not knowing the whole story. Zombichild. Zombie child big lots. (2019) Midsommar 9. 5/10 This movie isn¡Çt for everyone and I don¡Çt mean that in a pretentious way. I do think almost anyone can understand the plot, the subtext and motifs strewn throughout. However, the way it¡Çs presented, isn¡Çt always traditionally palatable. Astor is just such a student and fan of film that you can see this kaleidoscope of homages and influences throughout this movie, all while making it feel like his own project. Florence Pugh really surprised me. She had huge shoes to fill and my favorite aspects of the film were brought to light through her performance. Her character arc is the entire movie and I really felt like I related to her character, while being terrified by how much I also didn¡Çt relate to her, if that makes any sense. This is just a movie you need to see for yourself. (2019) Us 9/10 I¡Çm thankful that I can say, put simply, this film lived up to the hype. I was slightly concerned that it was going to be Peele¡Çs attempt at a home invasion horror movie but the script is spectacularly original and I can say with all honesty, it¡Çs very unpredictable. I love how it¡Çs once again, like his previous film, set in an idyllic location. It opens with tons of effective humor, coupled with the cheery atmosphere; its inviting nature just makes the tonal switch hit that much harder. (2019) Little Monsters 8/10 Lupita is absolutely exceptional. She blew me away in Us and she blew me away here. Her performance, character and delivery are so exceptionally genuine here. Really everyone is fantastic. Josh Gad and Alexander England are hilarious and deliver some really witty dialogue. It's just a surprisingly sweet and funny zombie movie. I loved it. (2019) Furie 7/10 (2019) Godzilla: King of the Monsters 7/10 (2019) Glass 8. 5/10 M. Night¡Çs superhero universe is so special to me simply because it¡Çs different. He took the task of creating and growing these characters in a realistic space, which wasn¡Çt guaranteed to work. It¡Çs pretty much universally agreed that Unbreakable is a fantastic film and Split while respected, was divisive. Now with Glass, everything has only become even more divisive as this universe is fully established. I respected this film so much for not hiding behind itself, the entire plot puts all three characters in the forefront and shines light on all their strengths and weaknesses. It¡Çs clear James McAvoy is the star though. His performance is absolutely incredible. (2019) Ma 7/10 (2019) Crawl 7. 5/10 (2019) I Am Mother 8/10 I Am Mother is an incredible sci-fi horror film that while borrowing from previous successes, manages to add a whole new human element that makes it unique. I thought Clara Rugaard did a great job. My initial thoughts were that the role didn¡Çt require much but the subtleness of her role arguably required a greater effort than a traditional dramatic role. (2018) Dragged Across Concrete 8/10 S. Craig Zahler is unlike any other filmmaker out there. His style is akin to an NFL ref who really doesn¡Çt care to step-in too much to call penalties. His films are lengthy because he really just likes, natural, raw, uncut scenes and that aspect is pleasantly subversive to traditional filmmaking. It comes with some potential pitfalls like actual missed editing (more so complete omission) opportunities of certain scenes and overall this project can seem too long. Despite the length though, it kept me engaged the entire time and has such a unique, albeit potentially racist perspective. (2018) Lords of Chaos 8. 5/10 I've been a black metal fan forever and this is a biography-ish (who knows what actually went down exactly) film about the band Mayhem. Man, some scenes are so brutal and dark bur most importantly, I loved how it portrayed most of these dudes as neo-nazi incels. I still fucking love Burzum and Mayhem but I'm glad they got this one right. Rory Culkin is pretty fantastic in his role and I feel like the horror community should be interested in this. (2018) Incident in a Ghostland 9/10 I¡Çm so grateful for a psychological horror film of this magnitude and frankly, the best twist since the M. Night-era. I¡Çm filled with questions but ultimately I thought it was one of the smartest films of the year. I found the sound design to really play into the gut-wrenching meat of this project and it¡Çs something I could discuss for days. The cinematography is also fantastic, violence is fast and impactful. (2018) Climax 8/10 The dancing in this film almost feels like it¡Çs intertwined with every aspect of both the story and the production. It¡Çs almost hypnotizing at times and evolves eventually into a brutally intense sequence of dizzying follow-cam style shots as you watch these incredible performers contorting their bodies. It all eventually sort of decays as characters separate and reality from the drugged-up trip seems to blur. Actual horrible things are happening in real life but because these characters are consumed by delusion. I think people need to watch this and just sit with it for a bit before forming an opinion; I definitely needed to. (2018) The House That Jack Built 9. 5/10 In my mind, this is Lars Von Trier¡Çs masterpiece and Matt Dillon¡Çs best performance to date. It¡Çs hands down the most fun, engaging, darkly humorous, disturbing, bleak and creative film I¡Çve seen in a long time. (2018) Braid 8/10 Braid is a fantastic film and one that I can¡Çt jump to compare to anything else. It¡Çs such a fresh new take on the psychological horror genre. I loved how I actually didn¡Çt understand what was going on in the beginning but was so enamored with the visuals that my attention didn¡Çt waver. The film really excels in storytelling and all three actresses did a great job at selling their roles. It¡Çs one of those great mystery projects that¡Çs hard to talk about because you so badly need to go in blind. (2018) Venom 7/10 (2018) Head Count 7. 5/10 (2018) The Witch in the Window 8. 5/10 First off, this film has the funniest fucking spotlight negative review on iMDB about a festering rotten cup of piss and I love that. Unfortunately, or fortunately rather, I wholeheartedly disagree. It was one the most emotionally impactful movies I¡Çve seen in months. The cinematography is so clean and correlates with the tight knit story itself. Nothing is hidden; the dialogue and visuals are very much the focus. It blends scary with intriguing in a way that¡Çs truly unpredictable. (2018) The Strangers: Prey at Night 7/10 (2018) Suspiria 9/10 It¡Çs definitely a lengthy film but the narrative is fantastic. The visuals are muted in stark juxtaposition to the original but they¡Çre so fucking raw and twisted that it works. There¡Çs also several performances to note, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth and our lead of course, Dakota Johnson. I don¡Çt think there¡Çs any competing with Goblin¡Çs original soundtrack for Argento¡Çs film but Thom Yorke did a good job. It took a re-watch to fully appreciate his work but I like that it¡Çs different and very melancholy. (2018) The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot 7. 5/10 (2018) Bird Box 8/10 The creature design in this film is so incredibly unique and almost intangible at points. It¡Çs not without its minor flaws, such as some shoe-horned characters and flirtations with over-used tropes but they don¡Çt seem to detract from the big picture. (2018) Hold the Dark 8/10 Jeremy Saulnier is an incredible director, usually putting forth visceral experiences that both speak for themselves and hit the viewer hardest from a visually artistic standpoint. Hold the Dark is completely different. It contains the same expert level cinematography, sound design and photography but where it differs is its story driven aspects. The tale of this film so-to-speak, is fucking insane. (2018) Halloween 8/10 I absolutely loved this movie, if not simply for the fact that it balanced that difficulty of paying homage to the original series, while using modern techniques to elevate it. It¡Çs extremely well-produced but still forces itself to break away from the obscured angles and macro shots to give us these raw, long follow-cam sequences. (2017) The Crescent 7/10 (2017) Cold Skin 7/10 (2017) Jungle 8/10 For a religious-themed film about survival and hope, McLean did decide to pull from his horror-film roots for the most intense, seemingly hopeless portions of the film. The ominous music, tense visuals and crushing psychological twist is for me, what sets it apart from many other films of the same vein. (2017) Pyewacket 8. 5/10 I fucking love occult horror and this film was downright scary. That¡Çs truly one of the greatest accomplishments because I don¡Çt usually get scared watching horror films anymore. It¡Çs somewhat of a slow burn but in a way that really creeped me out. (2017) A Ghost Story 9. 5/10 It¡Çs really difficult to put into words why I loved this movie so much because it was less about the mechanics and more about that way it made me feel. I never thought I would come close to crying watching Rooney Mara eat pie for what seemed like a half hour but here we are. It¡Çs an arthouse film. They fuck with the aspect ratio. They fuck with every shot, oftentimes by not fucking with it at all. It was touching to me; sweet at times, dark, lonely and ultimately hard hitting. (2017) The Bar 7. 5/10 (2017) Tigers Are Not Afraid 9/10 It didn¡Çt even really register to me that even films that portray the Cartel in the most violent way, still tend to be glorifying the culture. This film weighs the innocence of childhood directly against the gang¡Çs ruthless nature to deliver a seriously moving project. I absolutely

Zombie children costumes. I think this talks about dealing with grief itself; locking yourself up in your own house and refusing to accept reality and move on past a death. This shows how it quite literally tears the couples relationship apart and destroys them, turning them into dolls. Its okay to deal with grief in moderation but another to let it consume your life; hence why the doll maker describes it like a drug- ¡Èfun to use but dangerous to abuse¡É But idk tho lol. I did one of these a couple years ago and people seemed to like it, but I figured it could use an update. Take these with a grain of salt, of course, this is more for fun than anything. It¡Çs a pretty long post so I¡Çd probably recommend just skimming through for any names you¡Çre interested in. Pedro Almodóvar It¡Çs too big for me! I like to see what I¡Çm doing, to direct movies the same day. You have to wait too long to see the results. I like being able to impose my opinion as a director. I¡Çve made 21 movies. I¡Çm used to doing it the way I like, not fitting with the Hollywood system. (Vulture, 2019) Darren Aronofsky You never know. I mean, Superman would always be interesting. But they¡Çre already deep into reinventing him, so that¡Çs not going to happen for a long time. I think with those films you have to be careful because they are about communicating with as big an audience as you possibly can. Audiences who go to see those films expect a certain type of movie. Around midnight, Alphonse was told, Polliwog would start plotting the doctor¡Çs downfall, talking about a posse of Natchez ruffians unhappy with his cornering of the pharmaceutical market and morally untroubled by spontaneous lynchings. The few patrons of the Soggy Boot sober enough for coherence would nod along. But Alphonse doubted any of them took him seriously. Alphonse tore down the ladder and eyed Doctor Joachim¡Çs shotgun, resting against a bookshelf. CRACK! BANG! The walls shook. From outside, a voice rang out. ¡ÈWhy dont¡Çcha bastards come out and face us like men? ¡É Hoots and hollers came in response, followed by more loud thuds. Someone was throwing rocks at the greenhouse. Many someones. BANG! SNAP! A piece of wood broke loose from the wall and ricocheted, narrowly missing Cash¡Çs head and violently crashing into a Scalliwag. Startled, the plant howled like an injured dog. That was it. Alphonse snatched up the doctor¡Çs rifle and, as another piece of the wall broke loose, paced to the door. In one movement, he turned the knob, hoisted the gun to his shoulder, and stepped into the warm air. There were eight of them, some sitting atop horses and mules, others crouching to pick up more stones, all bearing the bloodthirsty smiles of an executioner. Eight men. Three white, two black, the remainder a mix of the two. Alphonse recognized a few of them from town. Voodoo Tom, clutching a sharp machete, stood near the back, nearly vibrating in macabre glee. They had clearly not come to negotiate. At the front, his grin widest of all, was Polliwog Chevalier. One hand held a rope wrapped around his shoulder, the other rested at his waist. ¡ÈWell, boys, look who we smoked out of his hidey-hole. ¡É Alphonse pulled the trigger. BANG! He stumbled back. Alphonse, who¡Çd never shot at another man, and who intended to scare the men more than harm them, was more rattled by his warning shot than they were. He hit nothing but air. Polliwog then raised his arm. Alphonse barely had time to register the glint of moonlight off metal before he heard a POP, and burning pain exploded in his chest. He clutched at his shirt. He pulled his hand away soaked in blood. Then he smelled smoke. With a whooping war cry, two more men rode around from behind the wooden structure, bearing flaming torches. The greenhouse was on fire. Adrenaline dulling the pain, Alphonse dashed back through the door. He found Cash darting about frantically, his arms full of Bunnengos and Wattingsroot clippings, desperately trying to decide what else to save. ¡ÈLeave it! ¡É Alphonse screamed. ¡ÈThere¡Çs ten of them. They¡Çre armed. ¡É Doctor Joachim¡Çs magical nursery was dying. Already, orange tongues of fire cut through the wooden walls and set alight the crawling Lamigavens, their vines thrashing angrily. The purple-blue bubble of artificial atmosphere melted like butter in a pan. A cacophony of screams rang out, like a colony of dying rabbits, blood-chillingly human. The Scalliwags were burning. Their ugly tentacled heads twisted and writhed. Piblings, smoked from their subterranean homes, skittered carelessly over the dirt floor like cockroaches in the light. Cash didn¡Çt listen. Alphonse snatched up his bucket of Lamigaven flowers, then doubled over in a fit of coughing. Grey smoke filled the greenhouse. Eyes burning, he ran for the visible outline of the door, Cash close on his heels. They exited to face Polliwog and his laughing mob. Horses paced like wildcats before a kill, spurned by predatory riders. Torchlight danced. Whoops and taunts cut through the warm spring air. Cash and Alphonse were surrounded, trapped like mice in a barn, their executioners savoring the moment, playing with their food. Alphonse felt a burst of pain in his head, and then nothing. ***** He awoke on a cot in a one-room cabin. First, he registered the soggy bandages wrapped around his chest. Next, he noticed Cash, sitting at his side and pressing something warm against his forehead. He tried to sit up. Cash put a hand on his ribcage, indicating he should stay where he was. Alphonse digested the rest of the room in pieces. There was writing on the wall. Blocks of text scrawled directly onto the wood paneling, in the same bizarre logograms he¡Çd seen the doctor scribble on paper. Black ink mostly, but some in deep red. Interspersed with the writing were large, pinned-up pieces of parchment, some also bearing strange letters, others consisting of large drawings, complicated arrangements of circles and lines and squares. In one corner, a wood-burning stove. Clutter everywhere. Disorganized shelves of books and rolled-up parchment, multicolored vials to match those in the doctor¡Çs apothecary shop, assorted tools and utensils and wooden boxes with broken latches. Drying Viblurbub leaves hung on a line. With a turn of his stomach, Alphonse realized the pink hides drying on another rack were the extracted skins of Pibblers. A little table at the center of the room. On it rested two of the pastel-pink spheres that had hung in the greenhouse. It was cool in the cabin, cooler than the warm night should have allowed. He realized then that everything he¡Çd seen had been tinted with a sickly yellow glow. They were in a bubble - another artificial atmosphere encircled the room. A door opened somewhere behind him. Then, Doctor Joachim¡Çs voice. ¡ÈHe awake? ¡É Alphonse sat up to face the doctor, who he clutched a third pastel hanging spheres, this one girlish violet. It was the closest Alphonse had ever been to one. He saw something dark in color, rattling around within its plasticine wall. Cash nodded. The doctor smiled at Alphonse. One of the posse, Cash explained, had struck Alphonse over the head with a wooden plank. Cash was sure they¡Çd both be killed. Arms full of clippings, rifle dropped inside the burning greenhouse, facing a small army of angry, burly men, he was defenseless. Then, a sparkling ball of lightning bounced across the ground like tumbleweed, glowing brilliantly in the darkness and aimed directly at Polliwog and his conspirators. The horses were spooked. One man was bucked to the ground as a second lightning ball followed the first. Panic ensued then; two men ran off into the darkness, those still on horseback struggled to regain control of the scared animals, and that marauder¡Çs smile had been wiped clean off Polliwog¡Çs face. The god¡Çs eyes lit up as Chiron appeared at his side, ¡ÈChiron! My man!.. ¡Ä man-horse? Don¡Çt get bit. ¡É Apollo reached carefully back inside, drawing out a cowboy hat and putting it on a bit crookedly, ¡ÈThen there is the hat of Eurytion, a cowboy hat that when worn, enhances the user¡Çs eyesight to a degree that it cannot be physically blocked¡Ä Y¡Çknow like with a blindfold or something. Additionally, the user can see at nighttime as well as they typically can in the daytime. This effect wears off when the hat is taken off. ¡É He paused to look at himself in the car mirror, his smile beaming at his reflection, ¡ÈI¡Çve got to say¡Ä I look pret-ty snazzy in this one. ¡É After tossing the hat back into the prize ¡Ä his car, Apollo quickly got on with the other two, ¡È. let¡Çs see here, we¡Çve also got The spear of Geryon, a large spear capable of splitting into three. Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.

What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.
