Right off the bat, it¡Çs important to note that most of us have seen films that have a foundation similar to this one. A down on his luck, depressed character who gets a chance for redemption and then it is hit or miss as to whether they are successful. In this film, which seems like a citified reboot of ¡ÈHoosiers, ¡É Jack (excellent and perfect for the role, Ben Affleck, ¡ÈJustice League¡É) stars as a construction worker, separated from his wife, Angela (Janina Gavankar, Blindspotting¡É). Jack is also an alcoholic, especially fond of beer, except at work where he preferred the easier to hide, gin. He pretty much avoids everyone except his local bartender. He has a seemingly supportive extended family including his mother, his sister Beth (Michaela Watkins, ¡ÈGood Boys¡É), her husband and 2 kids. Out of the blue, he gets a call from Father Edward Devine (John Aylward, ¡ÈThe Architect¡É) who is the principal at the Catholic high school where Jack attended. Jack was also a highly touted basketball star who refused college scholarships to rub it in his dad¡Çs face. Jack is brought into the school and offered the job of coach of the dismal basketball team. Reluctant (of course), he eventually takes it (of course). The assistant coach is Dan (Al Madrigal, ¡ÈNight School¡É) who primary job is a science teacher. The mostly rag-tag team has a couple of promising players including a kid named Brandon (Brandon Wilson, ¡ÈBeyond the Lights¡É) who is the point guard but is very quiet, a bad trait for that position which runs the offense. The team, who has lost most of their games so far, goes on a winning streak that will lead to the play-offs. But Jack is still heavy on the booze and in the second act we learn what caused him to dive deep into the bottle. One of the things that I was impressed with in this film is that the actors are actually pretty good players and the basketball scenes are quite realistic. This is something usually missing from these type films. We see high school players in football maim other players with no penalty. We see every player on a basketball team showboat. These things don¡Çt happen in the games I actually watch. Some of my favorite scenes are with Jack and Father Mark Whelan (Jeremy Radin, ¡ÈFuneral Day¡É), the team¡Çs spiritual advisor. Jack has a hard time curtailing his profanity, something the Father Mark has to remind him of on a regular basis. In that regard, the film earns its ¡ÈR¡É rating. I also chuckle when Jack is told he has to wear a coat and tie, something he obviously hasn¡Çt done in years. He dusts one off, found in an old box, finds a tie and puts it on. It¡Çs dirty, probably smelly and underneath is his unkempt pants and an untucked shirt. Jack doesn¡Çt think twice about it. He doesn¡Çt care. This is certainly one of Affleck¡Çs better performances. He¡Çs tall, gruff and looks the role. He¡Çs nearly a lost cause, but perhaps he and the team can push forward together. Nothing new here, but it is a well told story of redemption. Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2020 Format: DVD ¡ÈThe Way Back¡É Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, 108 Minutes, Rated PG-13, Released March 06, 2020: Jack Cunningham is a man with a haunted past. Once a high school basketball phenomenon and the star player on his school¡Çs state championship team, Jack passed up a full scholarship to the sports powerhouse University of Kansas for reasons that remain locked in his heart. Now an embittered, hard-drinking, middle-aged construction worker, Jack is offered an opportunity for redemption as the basketball coach at his old high redemption comes at a cost. Directed by Gavin O¡ÇConnor, the filmmaker behind the 2004 hockey-themed drama ¡ÈMiracle, ¡É the acclaimed martial arts-themed drama ¡ÈWarrior¡É in 2011, and the 2016 action thriller ¡ÈThe Accountant¡É (which starred Affleck in the central role), ¡ÉThe Way Back¡É is not an easy picture to categorize or even describe--a hybrid of a sports movie and a character study, with sharp editing and grainy photography reminiscent of a documentary, a quality enhanced by the movie¡Çs cast of relatively unfamiliar performers. For most of the way, the filmmakers seem to think we¡Çve never seen a sports movie before: A hard-luck, losing team of colorful outcasts with the intervention of the tough love of a hard-bitten new coach is surprised when the combination leads to points adding up on the scoreboard, and begins to dream of the championship. But even with the inclusion of practically every sports cliche you¡Çre ever seen, the filmmakers proceed with an earnestness and conviction that makes the picture awfully tough to resist. But the film is driven home by the performance by Ben Affleck as the reluctant new coach. Bearded, bloated, and foul-mouthed, carrying so much extra beer muscle that his eyes seem at times almost swollen shut, the actor contributes an uncharacteristically realistic and lived-in quality that¡Çs authentic right down to his untucked shirt and cruddy fingernails. This is Affleck¡Çs most heart-wrenching and gut-churning performance, since ever. The actor¡Çs performance is so compelling that the audience follows along when events begin to head south for the coach during the picture¡Çs third act and the picture actually becomes uncomfortable, and possibly even difficult to watch for some viewers. This is some powerful stuff, presented by people who seem to know their subject well. The dichotomy is that by the point when ¡ÈThe Way Back¡É appears like it could eschew a traditional wrapup for a more challenging and even existential denouement, the audience might not be in the mood for a challenge. Written by Brad Ingelsby, the journeyman screenwriter behind the wrenching Pittsburgh-based 2013 drama ¡ÈOut of the Furnace, ¡É ¡ÈThe Way Back¡É is a compelling and sometimes difficult motion picture experience. These guys know their liquor--this is a movie which works hard to earn its R rating, and likely contains one of the most realistic depictions of binge drinking ever committed to film. But in a movie which reportedly has a particular emotional resonance to its star, Ben Affleck contributes a performance which might well be remembered during awards season. ¡ÈThe Way Back¡É is receiving enthusiastic reviews from the critics, including an approval rating of 88% from Rotten Tomatoes and a weighted average of 68% from Metacritic. Rotten Tomatoes notes that the picture¡Çs ¡Èoccasionally frustrating treatment of a formulaic story is outweighed by Ben Affleck¡Çs outstanding work in the central role. ¡É Exit audiences polled by CinemaScore award the picture an average grade of B-plus. Playing on 2718 theater screens across the United States and Canada, ¡ÈThe Way Back¡É is rated R for scenes depicting liquor consumption, and adult language throughout.
