And then we danced. ?. And then we danced interview. And then we danced sundance. And then we danced bassiani scene. And then we danced dancing. [UNEDITED] I saw that many of you non-swedes wanted to be able to enjoy the recent interview he did in Swedish. I have not had time to edit the text yet so it will be filled with spelling mistakes and such but if I have time later on I might fix that. The interviewer is called Mats Nileskär and he alternates between asking questions and explaining stuff so that's why sometimes it's just him retelling things that lean said earlier. Anyways here is the transcript: Mats: There was once a sixteenyearold full of love for screw, drill and Florida trap. Full of fascination for fantasy figures and the cinematic. He rapped honest, drowsy, tentatively and almost apathetic to strange, mind expanding beats. Music that didnt exist in reality. Yung leans journey from his laptop in his room in Södermalm, to sold out shows and rock star dreams in the country of Hip Hop. It is one of the most beautiful stories in the history of Swedish music. And like all beautiful stories it holds plentiful of darkness. Yung Lean could have ruined everything and been scarified on the emo rap scene. Instead he became the influential survivor. Yung Lean and the producer friends in Sad Boys changed the world and intertwined with something beyond their own existence. Lean: I usually dont sit and count who my influences are. Because I have always had a lot of my own influences that I have payed homage to. But sometimes I dont think about stuff and then I get a dm on Instagram. Like I got a dm from Trippie Redd that read like “Shoutout to one of my biggest influences. ” Music break Ugly God. Like lots of rappers that I wouldnt think were fans of me. Then there are these that are a bit more obvious like maybe suicide boys, Pouya. When they meet me at festivals, they are fans. And I dont want to come off as bragging, it is the same way when, like I met young thug once in New York, and then I get star struck, I am a fan of him, nothing weird about that. But there is like, you know, group from group, it goes back. If you look at Wu Tang, and then it goes down, it gets weirder, like Odd Future and Asap Mob. And when we started, there was probably more people that thought like, like Yung Sherman, Yung Gud, Bladee, and all in Drain Gang and Sad boys and this is what we look like, we can also do this. I think we made it even more easy to access. And even more like, you only need a computer and internet. And less of, like maybe you dont even have to skate, maybe you dont even have to live in New York. More of like, you have a concept, and we were strict with that concept, we had a clear aesthetic, a clear way of making music videos, a clear message. It was easy to take things from that goth aspect, or the sad aspect, or like, people had purple hair like Ecco had. People dressed exactly like Bladee or Sherman, or rapped like me. And I still think that I see that today. And Im proud, and Im happy. I dont see it as something negative, like, shit these boys are stealing or all these rappers are stealing, its more like, in that case I have also stolen. Everyone has been influenced by something, and as long as you are not ashamed about that, its okay, because that is how it goes. People can be like, Ive never listened to Yung Lean, And I can see that they obviously have, and like… Music break (Unreleased Lean) Lean: We got a lot of the autotune aspect from, like Bladee and Whitearmor started using it a lot, and me and Micke (Gud) used it a lot. For us that was inspired by Future and Atlanta. And Casino and the first FBG mixtapes with young scooter and all those. Like those were using autotune. But we were from Europe, like, we are from The Knife country, Håkan Hellström, Broder Daniel (Swedish artists) it is more like Kraftwerk when we do it. It is more monotone, a bit more dead, maybe a bit more ABBA english. It is a bit more depressing I think. And that is not something you try to do, it just ends up like that. And then I think that, a mix of that, we we got big during 2013, Hip Hop went more Nihilistic, dark, it was grim. The way Chief Keef rapped, everything after Finally Rich, Bang 2, Almighty So, it was like melodies but dark mumbling about killing people. Hip Hop was going that way. You no longer had to have a hook like “Woke up in a new Ferrari”. The whole song could be the same melody. Mats: The bored and monotone mumbling turned into an anxiety lowering melody. And a manic flow of words. Yung Lean and sad boys, deeply uninterested in conventional song structures landed in the beginning of the start of a new era. Post Hip Hops surrealistic and psychedelic era. The new era was open for people that had not belong before. People that looked and sounded like Lean. A new sound, a new way to experience and listen to music. It was perplex and fascinating. Something Sad Boys happily utilized. Lean: Yeah, its true. As long as you, like for us it was the natural thing to do. For us it wasnt that we were exploiting this style of music or what they were doing in the US. For us it was more like, I have rapped since I was a kid, same for making beats for Micke. Drain Gang had a punk band. All of us made music. And when the time came it was just logical for us to take part. Same with rapping in English, it just came naturally. I actually lived in Vietnam three years before that. My mom is a diplomat so I was in the English school and spoke English so rapping in English came naturally. That the beats were slowed down, that, like everything was a bit weird, it came naturally to us. And of course the timing was perfect, it wouldnt have been able to come at a different time. I think Ive said that before. That if that had happened in 2009 it would have felt fake. I would have had to be more of a Paul Wall character or like Petter (Swedish Rapper. I was very lucky with coming up during that time. But after all I was just being myself to 100. I think that if I hadnt been, it wouldnt have worked out. Music break Lean: Except for you and some others it was typically Swedish, a prime example of how it is in Sweden. A Swedish artist comes up, something they dont recognise. They think its embarrassing. A Swedish sixteen year old boy from Södermalm, a middle class boy. He shouldnt be doing this, its embarrassing. They wouldnt want to touch me with a ten foot pole. He cant be included here blah blah blah. But the second that the US started appreciating it and when he was in the New York Times or when he collaborates with Frank Ocean or other big names. Then they are ashamed of themselves. Like “Oh shit, he is Swedish, he is with us now…” Its typical for Sweden, the law of Jante, like you shouldnt think that you are somebody. That was basically what I witnessed since I was sixteen. Its sad that we cant trust each other and support everyone. I really believe that there is room for everyone to make it in Sweden. Mats: What did it do to you, experiencing this? The Journey from hate to understanding and in the end to love. Lean: I think that it might have been easier with hate. To be completely honest, if you look back at a lot of rappers, when they were hungry, when they were still hated or underground, they had so much to give. And I had that kind of idea in my head. That it was more exciting when Sweden hated me and I was only famous in the US. I really thought it was interesting. But I have matured now, time has passed, six seven years since we talked. The music I make now is different. If I had not been loved and was still hated, it would have been a bit perverse. Maybe then I had only been provoking just to provoke. I dont like that. Right now I think I deserve to be where I am. I wouldnt want to be in any other position. Music break Mats: What happened when you got to the US for the first time, as an unlikely star? Lean: What happened? I cant say I remember a lot. We were very young. Suddenly we were sitting in limousines. Lots of drugs, lots of illegal substances. We were very young, you know almost like a Metallica documentary, suddenly someone is sitting there with a knife in some group or something. No but a lot of things went downhill, but all the gigs were so much fun. It was some kind of friendship, like a family. You cant take away all the gigs and the touring we did in the start. When we arrived in the US, its like, you know Femi, Emilios girlfriend, that has been with us since day one. She says its like we were all a part of Lost. Like the airplane crashed and when we meet each other now all of us know that we were part of that. Character wise I dont remember anything that was any special. I remember us playing at Röda Sten in Gothenburg for 150 people. And when we got to New York we sold out Webster Hall twice, back to back. And rappers were contacting us, we were hanging out with artists. It was another level of respect. I guess Im a bit like you there. Im a hip hop nerd, always have been. When I started expressing myself through this music it was easier for Americans to understand what the fuck I was doing than for like a 40 year old Swedish man. So theres nothing weird about that. But I wish I remembered more from the first tours (laughing. Music break Lean: You are sixteen, you go to the US, you are living in some hotel, you get to meet some drug dealers from Florida whom are also promoters, they have a Cadillac, and someone is backstage and lots of different rappers are coming in and suddenly Travis Scott is there and blah blah blah. Things are happening all the time. You wake up in a bed there are people around and then you have to go on stage. (Lean starts talking about something else) Is that David Lynch? Sorry we are watching a movie, we are watching Dumbo. (Back to interview) I wasnt really ready for that. That it was going to be so much work. You dont think that but there is so

Levan Akin, a Swedish-born filmmaker of Georgian descent, is in Cannes with his third film, And Then We Danced, about a young mans sexual awakening. The Directors Fortnight titles subject matter required the team to be scrappy while shooting in Tbilisi, he explained during a visit to Deadlines Cannes Studio. The cast and crew had bodyguards, says Akin in the video above, adding, “We couldnt be open about what the movie was about; we had to make up stories. It is legal to be gay in Georgia and there is protection on an official level. But as soon as we wanted to use locations and they would somehow hear what the movie is about, then the day before they were like, ‘No you cant film here. So we were like this ragtag group of people running around, it was pretty tough in that sense. ” In the film, teacher Aliko (Kakha Gogidze) says, “There is no sexuality in Georgian dance. ” That doesnt sit well with Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) who has been training since a young age at the National Georgian Ensemble. His world is suddenly turned upside down when the charismatic and carefree Irakli (Bachi Valishvili) arrives and becomes both his strongest rival and desire. In this conservative setting Merab finds himself having to break free and risk it all. Akin previously made 2015s The Circle which premiered in Berlin, and 2011s Certain People. And Then We Danced is his first Georgian-language film. In the video above, the writer/director explains he was inspired by seeing images of Georgias first pride parade in 2013 which was “attacked by a counter parade organized by the Georgian orthodox church and some far rightwing groups. Those images were really terrible. ” For Valishvili, the response to the films subject matter has been both positive and negative, but there is movement on the plus side. Overall, he says, there is a switch “to a more warm and positive dialogue-style conversation. ” Akin concurs: “There is a vocal young progressive group trying to move this issue forward. ” The Deadline Studio is presented by Hyundai. Macklemore is probably the only rapper who would dare to wear a gold glitter tight onesie. And Then We dance life. “Did you know that early astronomers thought there were oceans on the moon? ” I asked, looking up from my book. My mom shifted in her bed, a tangle of IV tubes shifting with her. “Of course. The moon seems like the perfect place to find an ocean. ” “What a shame we never found water then, ” I said. “Because those false seas, astronomers called them ‘maria. ” Mom smiled. “How sweet of them to name the moon oceans after me. ” “Well, they didnt find any oceans, ” I reminded her. “Maybe they just didnt look hard enough, ” she replied, a little laugh slipping from her lips. For all of the pain she was in, all of the fear she must feel, my mother always had the kind of laugh that could light a candle. We were in her hospital room, the same one wed been in and out of for the last year and a half. Sometimes we had a roommate, sometimes we were alone. Always she held steady enough for both of us, the rock I tied my hope to, the wall against the grief I knew was coming. Cancer is such a mundane word for something so hungry and cruel. Ive noticed medicine does that a lot, covers horror with tedious language like a bed sheet over a body. Malignant. Inoperable. Metastasized. Terminal. But when she she laughed we werent in the hospital anymore, we were home. When she laughed, she wasnt sick, she was young again, and I was a kid, and the world was a bright place begging to be explored. What a miracle my mother was. Cancer had taken so much from her, aged and hurt her, but it could never steal her laugh. That was hers to keep. “How are we feeling today? ” the doctor asked. He came in less and less often. We could all sense this was the final stay in this room. “Just brilliant, doc, ” my mom said, struggling to sit a little higher. “We can still go dancing later if youd like. Though well have to ask for my sons blessing. Ever since his dad died, Brians been very protective of me. ” I put on a stern face. “Ill need to know your intentions are pure, Dr. Bradshaw. ” “As the driven snow, ” he played along. “But I might need a raincheck on the dance, Ms. Willen. Im not as young as I used to be. ” He emphasized his age, running his fingers through grey-white hair. My mom tapped her bare scalp. “Right there with you, tiger, ” she said. Dr. Bradshaw smiled but I could tell he was burdened. I saw him glance at the small idol Id placed on my mothers nightstand. The talisman was a miniature oak tree carved from gray soapstone. There were four faces etched into the tree, a sentry against ill health and bitter spirits. I could tell the stone tree made the doctor uncomfortable. In all honesty, I had a tough time looking at the idol for more than a few seconds. The faces were each whittled in vivid expression. The face closest to my mothers bed was smiling kindly and the face pointed towards the door was snarling, meant to ward away harm. The final two faces were both weeping. All four shapes were too human, too raw. There was a weirdness to the stone tree that put people on edge but Id grown used to every shade of weird you can imagine. My mothers side of the family was full of stories of unexplained luck and mysterious tragedy, whispered secrets and unexplained deaths. By all accounts, my maternal grandmother was either an honest-to-goodness witch or full-bore, high-caliber crazy, or both. Probably both. The stone tree was from a box of my grandmothers things Id found in the attic earlier that month. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but my mom did seem to get a bit better when Id brought in the talisman, at least for a little while. I was daydreaming about family history and the odd box while Dr. Bradshaw checked his charts and moms vitals. “Can I talk to you for a moment? ” he asked, ripping me back to reality. Bradshaw tried to keep a light tone but I could tell he didnt have good news. The hospital hallway smelled like ammonia and birthday cake. Someone must have had a party, maybe a patient, maybe a nurse. Strange how you remember the insignificant details while your world is crashing down around you. “Im so sorry, ” Dr. Bradshaw told me. “The results came in this morning. Its spreading aggressively. held it back as long as we could, Brian. Your mom is a fighter. But right now we just need to, well, to try to keep her as comfortable as we can. Brian? ” The wall was cracking, grief waiting on the other side, heavy and cold as an empty house. Id known for months that this was the most likely outcome but it still hurt to hear. Hurt worse than I could stomach. “Theres nothing left to try? ” I asked, fighting down the urge to throw up. “Anything, experimental, untested, anything? ” Dr. Bradshaw shook his head. “Im sorry. Sometimes we just run out of options. She fought a good fight. ” “How long does she have left? ” I asked, looking back into her room. Shed fallen asleep. “Not long. Maybe days. Have you considered hospice? ” The smell of ammonia and birthday cake. The steady beep of moms heart monitor. I tried to focus on the world around me. My hope wasnt dead yet. If medicine couldnt help my mom, maybe something older could. I thought of the box of my grandmothers things waiting in the attic. There was a lot in there I hadnt gone through yet, books and candles and secrets and lost things. Maybe there was a cure or at least a way to keep the fight going. “No, ” I said. “If all thats left is to make her comfortable, I want to take her home. ” The doctor smiled. “I understand. We can give you some medication, ways to help her with the pain. ” He put his hand on my shoulder. “Your moms been in a lot of pain but shell have peace, soon. Youve done all you can. ” “I know, ” I lied. “Thank you. ” Mom lived in a small ranch house ten miles outside of town. There wasnt much in the way of neighbors besides some woods and a creek slithering through her yard. It was a windy, warm March afternoon when I took my dying mother home. That night I began my work. I was going to turn the house into a bunker, a maze Death could never solve. I would keep my mother safe, I would find a way to keep her alive. The little red book was full of ideas. Running water was an obvious place to start. The creek behind the house was barely a trickle but it should provide some coverage to the south side of the property. Salt was next, lining the doorways and window frames, then in an unbroken circle around the entire house. This step was to be repeated daily, the red book stressed, or even multiple times per day. Even a moderate breeze played holy havoc with any salt poured outside so it was always best to trace and retrace every few hours. Water and salt were common defenses against mans oldest enemy and well known. The book offered other, less conventional, advice. It took me nearly a week to finish carving the symbols and signs into the walls, the floors, even the trees on the property. Sometime around noon on the third day, on my back in the crawlspace etching strange marks onto the underside of the floor, it struck me how ridiculous I was acting. There was no proof that any of the information in the little red book was anything other than the delusional ramblings of a bizarre woman Id only met once or twice as a child. For all I knew, the runes meant to ward off Death were actually a grocery list written in Cantonese. But I was desperate, and every time I saw my mother she looked frailer, more fragile. So I continued carving and praying and building layers upon layers of protections to keep Death far away. Making my marks took me all over the property. It was a big yard, nearly three acres that blended gradually into the surrounding forest. I wasnt able to pinpoint the exact boundary where cultivated met nature, the edges simply bled together, but I did my best to create a clean border with lines between the symbols. Id always loved the wildness here, the way you could wander a few hundred yards away from home and feel like youd traveled hundreds of years into the past to somewhere primal. This was the perfect playground for a kid, whether I was out exploring trails or trapping minnows or spending the summer building yet another treehouse, convinced this would be the final one. It never was, I was never satisfied. The house itself, though small, was more than enough room for my mother and me. Dad died when I was seven. I dont remember much about him, just how big he seemed, with a bonfire grin and arms that I thought could hold the whole word. My mom often said I took after my father. I could see it in the old pictures of him, we had the same eyes, green as moss in the summer, and the same fiery shock of red hair, enemy to every comb on the planet. The sicker mom got the more often she called me by my fathers name. I worried when she drifted away like that but a part of me was proud shed mistake me for him. After all of the symbols were carved there were a few steps left in the book to deter Death from visiting. There were dozens of charms and talismans in the bottom of the old box in the attic. I sat up there combing through everything my grandmother left behind, referencing the red book, pushing the tiny charms into tidy piles. None of the idols were larger than my thumb. Some were iron and others were wood, some were heavy, others light. All of them were uncomfortable to look at or touch. The attic was drafty but not nearly enough to explain the cold that burrowed into me as I sorted the charms. Im not particularly tall but the attic felt like it was designed for dolls, beams so low I couldnt even walk bent over. I moved around on my knees, rough floorboards threatening splinters even through my jeans. I could have taken the box downstairs where Id have more room but the idea filled me with a deep unease. It seemed better to leave the box up in the attic, only taking down objects as I needed them.

As time progresses, John gets caught up in the lives of those at Miss Mitzi's: his two fellow classmates - overweight Vern who wants to learn to dance for his upcoming wedding, and Chic, who wants to impress the ladies - and two of the studio's competitive amateurs, opinionated and brash Bobbie, who is looking for a dance partner, and one person who surprises John and who just wants to be able to show his true colors to the world while hiding under a mask. But as Paulina slowly allows herself to be involved in their lives as well, despite she vowing not to fraternize with the students, John comes to the spoken realization of what he was looking for when he first spotted Paulina in the window. Similarly, each of those at the dance studio are looking for their small place in life with the right person, Paulina included. John may not get the happy ending that he wants as Beverly, based on circumstances, believes he is having an affair. 9movies - watch Shall We Dance (2004) online free in Full HD 1080p. I finished my morning shift at the hospital and was getting ready to go on a run when my phone went off. The email contained a brief greeting before questioning whether I could come in before my first shift. I re-read the reason for this request a few times to make sure I wasnt misunderstanding. They wanted to know my mile time. In a sense, this would be my try out for recess duty. They were really serious about that 8 minute time. Principal Lucas signed off with a “let me know! ” and his signature. I glanced at the large full length mirror near my closet. My reflection stared back at me, wearing nike leggings and a confused expression. I shrugged at the mirror. Why not? I was already dressed. I called the school, figuring it would be faster, and was directed to meet my former gym teacher near the church entrance. Mrs. Johnson was already waiting for me as I parked in the small church parking lot. She had barely aged. Her narrow 54” frame was unimpressive, but it was wrapped in muscles that were the exact opposite. As I approached, I noticed that the only indication of the years that had passed since Id last seen her were a few pieces of silver now present in her otherwise inky black ponytail. “Well havent you gotten tall! Cant say Im surprised, you always had those long legs! ” She pulled me in for a hug before I could do more than smile. “It looks like youre dressed and ready to go! Perfect. Well be using the biking trail right on the other side of the lot there. ” She gestured behind me to a stretch of pavement that was only briefly visible before it disappeared back into the trees. We traversed the parking lot as I answered all of her questions. Where am I living now? What was my degree in? How are my parents? All of that obligatory small talk. “You can start here. ” Mrs. Johnson stopped walking as we arrived at the running trail and pointed to where it continued into the forest. “Half a mile in, there will be a bright pink “x” spray painted on the pavement. Double back when you get to it and meet me right back here, where you started. ” I took off into the forest, chasing the echo of Mrs. Johnsons “GO! ” as it bounced between the large, ancient trees. I tried not to think of why my mile was being timed by my middle school gym teacher. That was the stuff of nightmares, and odds were, so was the reason this mile time is so important. I had a hard time believing I needed to be in such good shape just to “keep up with the high energy students. ” How did they come up with 8 minutes anyways? Could demons only run a mile in 9? I smiled to myself as the bright pink X entered my field of vision, and planted my shoe right in its center before bolting back the way I came. “7 minutes 6 seconds. Very impressive. Johnson beamed at the stop watch as I tried to conceal the fact that I was nearly dying. “You should have no problem with recess duty then. Come on in for some water. ” She led me back across the parking lot and inside through the church entrance, prattling on about which teachers were still there and which ones had retired. I nodded and offered polite responses as I admired the church wing. We passed through a naturally lit lobby, past the actual church area, and entered the long hallway I mustve seen on the map. Johnson tossed me a bottled water from the fridge in the office as she boasted my mile time. Lori frowned at her computer screen and muttered her congratulations, but Principal Lucas showed more enthusiasm. He offered me the task of supervising morning recess for the younger children, afternoon recess for the older ones, and miscellaneous tasks to fill my time between them. I agreed, staying to chat for an acceptable amount of time before seeing myself out. Aside from how seriously the mile time was taken, I started to feel less anxious about volunteering at FTS. By the time I arrived for my first volunteering shift this morning, the ominous “code of conduct” had all but left my mind. I stopped at the office this morning, where I was briefed on recess duty once more and provided with a whistle. As I suspected, the whistle was silver. It hung from a thick black string, allowing it to be worn around its users neck. I dropped it over my head and pulled my hair out from under the string, suddenly recalling the various ways my former teachers carried their whistles. Johnson had hers on one of those spiral cord things people sometimes put keys on. Her cord was red and she always wore it on her wrist. My 8th grade teacher, Mrs. Roller, wore hers on a heavy looking silver chain around her neck. I made my way to the playground and waited for the kindergarten-2nd graders to arrive. It was a decently sized group, probably about 50 kids total. It may not seem like much for the cumulation of three different classes, but when I was a student it wasnt unusual for one grade to have only 5-6 students. The morning recess passed without incident. It was strange to be the adult in charge in a place that made me feel like a child again, but I quickly got used to it. I escorted all of them inside after a successful head count, and was then directed to the middle school class room to help grade algebra papers until lunch. I chose to sit with the middle schoolers at lunch time. I remember when I was that age at FTS, a new staff member did that once. He was our new choir teacher, and he was younger than the other teachers, probably in his mid 20s. He sat at our table and engaged in the conversation like he was one of us. It really won us over. I became familiar with the current middle schoolers almost immediately. Their dynamic made me think of my own middle school class. There was Sophia, who was clearly one of the more “popular” students. She had long red hair and cracked a lot of jokes, making her friends laugh frequently. Then there was Jared. To my objective adult eyes, he clearly had a crush on Sophia, but to them he was the rambunctious class clown. There was Leah, who had bright pink braces and spoke loudly, and April, who was clearly the quiet one of the bunch. There were obviously many more, but I could only learn so many names in one lunch period. I expected the afternoon recess to pass much like the morning one had. This time instead of pacing back and forth and watching the students play, I gave into the middle schoolers begging and joined them in a game of capture the flag. You know the one. There are two teams who each have their respective “flags” (in this case a small rubber traffic cone) and their respective boundaries. Each team hides their flag and “tags” anyone from the other team who enters their territory to steal it. I wont go much more into detail because frankly it doesnt matter. All you need to understand is that there are flags that need to be hidden by the team captains. Jared was ours, and he immediately dipped into the forest to conceal our flag among the trees. We waited for him to return so that we could start the game, but he seemed to be taking a while to hide the flag. I could sense the mounting impatience of his classmates, so I wandered a few feet into the forest. Jared was soon visible, holding the traffic cone limply at his side and staring intently into the trees. “Jared? ” I called, acutely aware that he was standing right next to one of the “boundary” trees. Its bright orange ribbon danced in the cold winter breeze. When he didnt answer, I approached him and touched his shoulder to get his attention. “My mom is out there. ” He said with a wavering voice. “I just saw her. ” I stood there silently for a minute as I tried to think of what to say. “Okay…” Was all that came out. Jared kept staring. “I think you should hide the flag so we can start. ” I told him. “Youll see your mom after school. ” Slow tears started to roll down Jareds cheeks, causing me to rethink my words. Was his mom dead or something? Why would he be seeing her in the forest if that was the case? I was struggling for another genius response when I saw her too. I glimpsed “her” only for a second as she moved swiftly through the trees, but a second was all I needed. She was easily 30 feet away from us, so she shouldnt have looked as tall as she did. What looked like a thin pink night gown was all that protected her against the bitter winter air, and it hung limply against her grey tinged skin. In the second she was visible, her head was hunched down into her shoulders as she peered sideways at us, smiling with impossibly sharp teeth. “Jared. ” My voice was low now, and I spoke quickly. Some memory gnawed at the edge of my mind again, but I didnt bother trying to identify it. “Jared thats not your mom. We have to go. ” I reached for his shoulder again, but before my fingers could make contact, he bolted. “JARED! ” I shouted before taking off after him. He ducked around the trees, pursuing the thing that was not his mother. “Jared! Jared? Jaredddddd! ” my heart jumped and skipped several beats in my chest as voices that were not mine echoed around us. Some were child-like, others the panicked tone of a mother who had lost her child in a store or busy park. Jared stopped for a minute and craned his neck around, trying to find the source of the voices. His bewildered eyes met mine as I caught up to him. “Jared, honey. Come to mama. ” The thing sounded like a grown man speaking in a high pitched tone, attem

I hope you all enjoy the commission. Again. His master shouted, grabbing Antoth under his arm and hauling him upright with rough authority. The young, ebony toned Cauthan stood on unsure feet. His thighs burned with the exertion of endless thrusts and parries. His lungs screamed for more of the humid, evening Maran air. Heat radiated from his many scales and short feathers. The Guardian did not let him wait. "Come. He demanded, rapping his sword against his shield. Wood struck metal and rang out over the enclosed arena, echoing off the barracks to Antoth's right and the houses and storage facilities to his left. Fury and frustration swirled around his chest in equal parts. "Rrrragh. Antoth roared, summoning his strength, digging his talons into the earth, and lunging at his master. The brown furred Cauthan was not as tall as he, nor as muscled, but he followed like the water of the river, easily sidestepping Antoth's attack before delivering a brutal strike to his apprentice's shoulder. The blow had the young Cauthan gritting his teeth in pain, the hardened leather sparring armor he sported barely dampening the force. Antoth swung wide with his shield, anger blurring his vision and opening him wide for attack. His master ducked, planted his feet, and shouldered him to the ground. "Do that in a fight with a half competent opponent and you're dead. Again. You know what they say, ursae. The bigger they are the harder they fall! I felt that one from here. An auburn furred huntress called from the railings, leaning against the wood as she played idly with her brown arm feathers. Shed done so incessantly since her adult plumage had come in. "Stow it, Ratha! Don't you have an animal to skin. Antoth shouted as he clambered to his feet. The Guardian delivered a swift punch to the side of his head with a gloved fist. "Your fight is here. Antoth's elder insisted, standing over him with a disappointed look on his face and Antoths swimming head force him to a knee. Shame burned in his belly as Ratha laughed loudly, enjoying her semi-regular pastime of taunting the village behemoth. "Stay focused, Antoth. I know you can land a hit. A kinder voice called from Ratha's side. A sleek, confident hunter with dark sandy fur, bold black feathers and scales, and sharp amber eyes was overseeing the combat as well. Antoth had passively noted the two of them returning earlier in the day, dragging a large chesko behind them. Ratha was getting better. "Daretho. She gasped, twisting her head towards her elder who'd so casually betrayed her. She couldn't bear to actually frown at him though, the enigmatic male who had refused to take a mate through his teens and twenties. He fascinated her completely and utterly. "I think you've taunted more than enough wild animals for the day, young one. he chuckled, maintaining the required rivalry between the temples of Valta and Uthos as his friend, the Guardian, trained his evident successor. The servant of Uthos only grunted in reply. "Oh come on, we brought it down just fine. Ratha protested. "And were it not for your brazen display, we would have done so without a chase. We aren't like them, Ratha. When we strike it must be true, the first time, just as the hyrven pack. You would not win against a brute like that if he saw you coming. Ratha wasn't sure if Daretho meant the male chesko with the great antlers, or the panting, towering Cauthan in the ring before her. Either way her inflated sense of honor was insulted. Her feathers flared defensively. "There's a reason the hyrven hunt the chesko and not the other way around. Mmm, that is true. the hunter agreed. "But woe to the hyrven who tries to kill a chesko without her pack. You'll understand one day, Ratha. The prideful moments of youth mean less and less as time goes on. You just have to survive long enough. I didn't realize you liked him so much. Ratha pouted as wooden swords clashed and clawed feet scuffled through the mud and well-worn grasses of the training ring. Antoth forced a shield parry from his master, and then another. They were blows that would have landed either of the hunters in the temple of Kel. Daretho laughed. "What's not to like, Ratha? He's your age, isn't he. Yes. She agreed suspiciously. "How incredible, to be so physically gifted at fifteen! He'll make a wonderful Guardian one day. Probably a decent mate too, eh spunky? Give him hell, Antoth. Oh please. Ratha laughed with derision. "He's too much of a stick in the mud to be the Guardian. He'll be old and gray by the time a successor is needed. As for that, he's more likely to squish a female than breed her. I cannot speak for Meylith, but one never knows what Kel may have to say about such things as our Guardian. a wizened voice called from behind them. The two hunters turned to find a short, smiling priest in black robes looking up at them. Daretho bowed as Ratha acknowledged his presence with her feathers. "Good evening to you, Thantis. You're without your mug. Daretho replied. "Priest of Kel. Ratha said with the due respect. Thantis walked forward calmly to join them at the side of the arena, his chin and jowls sporting a few more gray hairs than when they'd last seen him. "And you are still without a female! Good evening to you, Daretho. Thantis chuckled as the hunter took the joke in stride. "I should have known this would be the source of such a ruckus. He's a passionate one, isn't he. The death priest asked rhetorically, watching as Antoth bared his teeth, threw his shield to the ground, and tackled his master into the dirt. "Mmm, quite an interesting maneuver. It seems to have succeeded. Hardly, priest of Kel. That one would have sent him to meet your god. the Guardian called from his position on the ground, having slipped his blade between Antoth's torso and arm. "Heh, told you he's like an ursae. No finesse whatsoever. Woe to the female that ends up under that. Ratha laughed. "That's what it means to be the strongest. Daretho replied wisely. "When he gets better he'll be unstoppable. Stealth can be taught. Brawn less so. Everyone can be stopped. All you need is an arrow to the eye. Ratha insisted dismissively. "Your apprentice is right on this one. Thantis informed Daretho with a wink. "It is interesting, is it not? A life of so many years, snuffed out in a flash. The balance is difficult to understand sometimes, even for me. You've been attempting poetry again. the lean, wiry hunter guessed. Thantis smiled ruefully. "Guilty as charged, Daretho. But it is worthwhile the consideration of you martial fellows as well. Ratha cleared her throat audibly. "Pardon me young one; females too. The blade and arrow, the shield and spear. In a single moment you will kill so our village may live. It is a simple transaction, in some ways. Antoth and his brothers must both wield and defy death, a much more difficult task. I sometimes wonder if they are more qualified to serve the balance than I. Daretho cocked his head in thought, but Ratha's tongue was as swift as her arrows. "Pretty sure that sort of round about wordplay makes you more qualified. Ratha. Daretho scolded her swiftly. The guardsmen looked on during a pause in their struggle, seeing a truly repentant look on her face. "My apologies, Thantis. You are too harsh on her, Daretho. Speaking before you think is part of being young! Besides, I choose to take it as a compliment. And you are too kind to her, Thantis. Valta is a merciless Mistress. I see today is a day for learning everywhere. Thantis observed happily. "Guardian, guardian to be, hunters, I must take my leave. Oh and Antoth, do stop by if you require any bandages. Someday it'll be him needing the bandage- oof! Antoth was cut off by a swift pommel strike to the gut, a sneak attack that had Ratha in stitches yet again. he spluttered, dropping his weapon and placing his hands on his knees. "That wasn't- gasp "fair. No, it wasn't. the Guardian agreed with an uncommon, wry smile. His terse reply summed up a lesson that Daretho and his charge knew quite well, the ring was the only place where one would find a truly fair fight. "Now then, if you two are done appraising my apprentice like one of your hunted beasts, we'll be taking a moment. Well you heard the man. We've got a carcass to skin anyway. Selah Guardian, Antoth" Daretho called, turning and walking north towards the main avenue. Ratha seemed momentarily taken aback by the abrupt change in pace, scrambling to gather her spear, bow, and quiver as she decided making another jest at Antoth's expense was less enticing that spending more time with her erstwhile mentor, occasional hunting partner, and guilty obsession. "What? Hey, wait for me you old man. Ratha called, scampering after him. "Later, Antoth. Heh, later Ratha. he panted, bowing to his master as the Guardian silently motioned for his training sword and shield. Antoth handed them to him before beginning to undo the straps and clasps of his armor. "You and she will be of age next year, will you not. He demanded. "Oh come on, master. We've been over this. Antoth groaned, removing his bracers before working on his pau

Seven years ago I met the girl who could find the seams. “Youve got to see what Dani can do. ” ? I let myself be dragged across the park, passed the swings and to the big oak tree, where a girl with long black hair sat with a pile of books beside her. She looked up at the small crowd of fellow children surrounding her, sighed, and set down her book. “Can I help you? ” ? My best friend at the time, Jacob, beamed and plopped a stuffed bear on her lap. “Do the thing! Luca hasnt seen you do it yet! ” He said. ? Dani looked at me and my gaze immediately went to my shoes. “You dont have to if you dont want to, ” I murmured, feeling embarrassed about all the fuss my friend was causing. Jacob scoffed and crossed his arms. “You dont even know what she does yet! Come on Dani, show him! ” “I dont mind showing you, ” She said before picking up the bear. She brushed her fingers against its face and she smiled before she took her middle finger and ran it from the top of its head to its tummy. Like shed taken a sharp knife to it, the bear split open, revealing white stuffing and the red heart that had been stuffed in there when Jacob got it. She lifted it up to show it to all of us, before plopping it back on her lap and running her finger along the tear. When she pulled her hand away, the bear was whole again, like shed never ripped it open. ? Jacob scooped the bear back up and turned to me. “Cool, right? ” He asked. I shrugged. “I dunno. I guess? ” I said, knowing I probably looked less that convinced. Dani smiled then and got to her feet. “Okay. What do you want to see the inside of? ” She asked. ? I glanced around the playground before pointing to the swing set. “That. Can you cut that with your finger? ” I asked. I mightve only been a kid, but I was definitely not convinced by just cloth. ? Dani nodded and walked over, the crowd of kids following her in awe. She patted the chain of the pink swing before her finger sliced right through one of the links. The chain came free and then she proceeded to slice open the plastic of the seat. She picked up the mangled swing, spinning around to show how it really wasnt attached at all, before she reattached it. All with the touch of her finger. Now that convinced me. I probably looked like an idiot, just standing there with my jaw dropped while everyone else just clapped. “How do you do that? ” I asked in wonder. Dani shuffled her feet, a small smile on her lips. “Everything has a seam I can pop open. I can do it to anything, ” She admitted. ? I dug through my pockets and managed to pull out my 3DS. “Can you open this up? ” I asked. For the rest of the afternoon, Dani demonstrated her unique and bizarre powers to us. She did open up my 3DS, showing off all the electronics inside, and once she fixed it back up it booted up just like nothing had happened. She opened up a Rubix Cube, part of a branch, the monkey bars, whatever we asked she would demonstrate. Only if no adults were close though, one of the other kids suggested she open up one of the cars in the parking lot and she refused. ? One by one we all went home for dinner until it was just me and Dani. I was pretty awkward at that age, so we just stood in silence for an uncomfortably long time before I finally piped up with the question on my mind: “What do you want to open up? ” ? She stared at me in surprise for a bit before she shrugged. “I… I dont know. I dont really do it for myself anymore. I just do it so everyone else likes me, ” She said. ? I plopped down on the ground and pulled out my 3DS. “I dont have to be home for a while longer, my parents are working late. Want to play some games with me? ” I asked. I dont think anyone really asked Dani to do something with them before that didnt involve her cutting some random object open. But she slowly nodded and sat beside me, and until it got dark we played games. I probably wouldve stayed out longer if the red light signifying red battery didnt start glaring at us. ? “Ill come back and play with you tomorrow, okay? ” I said, sticking it in my pocket. Dani was grinning from ear to ear, her smile filled with joy. “Id really like that, Luca, ” She said. That summer I spent a lot of time in the park. Of course it was fun watching Dani cut open whatever object we brought her, but it was more fun just…. Talking with her. She was a really nice girl, after all, just quiet. There were several times Id be playing my 3DS while shed watch and shed end up falling asleep on my shoulder. She told me most nights she spent wandering around her home rather than sleeping. She never slept well. Then one day I came to the park while it was raining. I had the stomach ache of a lifetime but I wanted to see Dani. And she was there, as always. The rain was more of a mist in the air rather than a downpour, but I was more than glad to take a seat under the tree. ? Dani, of course, immediately picked up that something was off. “Whats wrong? You dont look so good, ” She asked, pulling her knees up to her chest. “Stomach ache. Mom said theres a flu going around, so dont get too close, ” I said. “What, or youll barf all over me? ” Dani giggled before something clicked in that head of hers. “… Luca, you know when you asked me earlier this summer what Id really want to open the seam of? ” ? I nodded. “I lied… I… Kinda want…” She blushed a little and murmured the next sentence so quietly I could barely make it out. “I kinda wanna see if a person has a seam. ” I responded by wiggling out of my t-shirt. “Sure! Maybe you can see whats wrong with my stomach! ” I said. I know, what kind of dumb ass move is that, but I was a kid and what kid isnt a little curious about what goes on inside them? Dani clearly didnt expect my enthusiastic consent, but she did a little dance in place before glancing around. “No one else is out here, but lets go behind the bushes. Just in case, ” She said. Excitement brimming between the two of us, we hid behind the bushes as I laid down on the ground, staring up at the gray sky. It was peaceful back here. “Okay, just start checking, ” I said. Dani knelt above me and her cold fingers ran over my chest. I tried not to squirm since I was so ticklish. For several quiet seconds I just laid there, wondering when shed start. “You can start whenever, ” I said, thinking she was losing courage. “Ive already started…” I glanced down and sure enough, she had. I hadnt felt a thing but my skin over my torso had been opened right up, cut down from the top of my sternum to below my belly button. Skin, muscle and ribs were just pulled open and to the sides so Dani could dig around in my guts. She slit open my stomach and I saw remnants of digested food, the pancakes Id had for breakfast. She sealed that back up quickly so nothing was disturbed as she proceeded to run her fingers through my intestines. “Thats so cool, ” I whispered, afraid if someone caught us now the little spell she had over me would be broken. “Im not even bleeding. ” ? It was true, there was not a single blood drop lost. Nothing seemed desperate to pop out of me either. It was just… there. I could see my heart beating, my lungs inflating and deflating with each level breath. I shouldve been afraid, but I wasnt. I was just fascinated to see what was going on inside of my body. “Theres something wrong. ” ? Dani scowled as she continued to prod and then I felt a bit of hot pain. “Careful! ” I hissed. “Sorry! I dont really know how, but I think somethings really wrong in here. Hold still, Im putting you back together. ” ? I stayed still as she finished zipping up my chest. I sat up and poked at my chest as if I expected my seam to burst open and everything to come spilling out all at once. “What do you mean, somethings wrong? ” ? Dani shrugged. “I dont know. I really dont. I just looked around in there and something doesnt feel right to me. Go talk to your mom, I think she needs to take you to the doctor. Did you really not feel anything? When I cut your seam? ” ? I shook my head and got to my feet, grimacing as that pain from my gut flared up. “Not a thing. Youre awesome, Dani. Im gonna go home now though, ” I said. “Please hurry. ” I went home and somehow managed to nag my mom long enough into taking me to the doctors office about my stomach ache. Course, Im sure you guessed by now it wasnt just a stomach ache. Appendicitis. Luckily it was all taken out before anything bad happened, but I was bedridden for two weeks. When I was finally well enough to play, I couldnt find Dani at the park. Asking around revealed she hadnt been back since that rainy day. ? She was gone. And she didnt come back into my life until the beginning of this school year. ? I barely recognized her at first. Im not really a tall guy, but even compared to your average guy Dani was practically a tree. She cut her hair short and shed grown up, but I saw her face and I knew. “Dani! ” ? I ran up to her and nearly plowed her over in my eagerness to get to her. Dani nearly jumped out of her skin as she looked down at me, then she realized who I was. “Luca? Is that you? ” She asked. I nodded eagerly, probably looking like an idiot. “Yes! Oh my god, Dani, youre tall! ” I said. When she smiled, I felt like I was a kid in the park, all over again. “… And youre still Luca. Im so glad… Im so glad to see you, ” She said before giving me a quick hug. “Do you have lunch next period? We can talk then, catch up? ” I barely touched my food because I was just too excited to talk to Dani. She was on the girls basketball team, was already saving up money for college in a few years. She wanted to be a vet. Meanwhile all I did was join the schools anime club and still have no idea what I want to do for a living, but she still listened. We didnt talk about seams. It was a silent agreement between us not to. I knew it happened, it wasnt something I made up. But the seams were something fro
And then we danced bassiani. And then we danced csfd. [Previous] p. First] f. Chapter 9 Art: Sybela Chapter 10: The Team. Seth and Keiko sat patiently through a tense, late lunch, constantly watching and waiting for Sybela or anyone else to provide a glimpse of what was going on out in the capital. Keiko was about to request that Seth contact the rabbit when an alert reached them both. The boys are going to be real damn surprised when they update theirs. Welcome to the team I guess, Sunburst. Anyway, I haven't seen anything all day. Seth, if we're going to move I think we need to move now, make sure we're in position before things get hot. "Well that settles it. Seth declared. He activated his lens and leaned closer to his terminal. "Argos, Talon, we're green. Sybela is sending you what she estimates are the best positions to observe and engage any anti-Sekhama activity. I'll be on-site soon. Seth out. Keiko regarded him acutely, finding his face was already an impassive mask. She imagined he was focusing on the things he'd need to do to ensure he was the animal who killed and lived that night. The human stood and casually threw off the baggier shirt and pants he'd been wearing so he could equip his armor. Keiko whined appreciatively, garnering his attention. "If that was intentional, keep doing it, Seth. The sculptors don't really seem to have captured the glory of the human posterior in the flesh. Perhaps it's been too long since they had a living model. He fixed her with an inscrutable look. "I have already received a death sentence for holding your hand so I suppose going further is technically an option. Are you feeling pent up, lady Keiko. He asked with the barest hint of mischief in his tone. The wild dog held a hand dramatically over her heart as Seth strapped on his greaves and did up his boots before moving on to his chestplate. "That's not a question you ask a lady of quality, Seth. We do not get 'pent up. How presumptuous of me. I beg your forgiveness, my lady. he replied, strapping a belt diagonally across his chest and tightening it against his armor. She saw it contained a couple of magicite heat sinks, a grenade, and other tools of his trade. "I was unaware ladies of quality lusted for the bodies of mercenaries…in a not pent up way, of course. We lust for the bodies of the Sekhama, Seth. Keiko said unabashedly as he checked and holstered his pistol before moving on to his knife and sword. The movements were methodical, practiced, as though he'd been through this routine hundreds of times. "My handmaidens never cease their adoration of Idris and the others. Some have given themselves to Sekhama in the harem; no strings attached, just to indulge. Others have fallen in love. she said adoringly. "Hosting a single man in their chambers or in the harem again and again and again. I like those stories the most. They're always more intimate, more detailed…" Seth had finished arming himself during Keiko's reminiscence. He stood before her, armed and armored to the teeth save his mask. "You're nothing like I imagined you, Keiko. he said, almost hungrily. His eyes were alive and danced against his stoic face. "You are so very wild, full of vigor. I'm surprised you didn't run off sooner. And you're nothing like I imagined you, Seth. she whispered, not moving an inch as he stepped towards her and then again. He was close, very close, close enough that she couldn't even bring her arms up between them. "Please help my people, help them destroy the cancer that's killing my city. And then come back. She watched as the corner of his lips hooked into the faintest of smiles. "Yeah, I can do that. he replied softly but confidently, resting a hand on her shoulder. She cocked her head at him, her golden chains shifting slightly under her ear. "I'm already on death row, right. Keiko's heart leapt into her throat and strangled her reply. Who was this compelling man before her? He certainly wasn't the human who had folded over in Sybela's presence, who had spoken so disparagingly of himself as unworthy of his ancestry. No, the human standing before her was something else entirely, a confident killer. My sword? For a moment Keiko was willing to believe that she might be able to have one of those stories her handmaidens wove for her with such reverence. "I daresay you are, mercenary. Then it can't get any worse, can it. He asked coyly, his voice like sandstone as he brought his head lower and closer. She could feel his heat on her nose, could sense the light wind of his breathing. "No…" Keiko whispered, wondering if he was really about to do what she thought he was going to do, what she desperately wanted to do. "Then it's time to claim my reason. Seth purred, reaching up and cupping her cheek as he pressed his lips against hers. They were chapped and rugged, but the muscle underneath was soft and gentle. Keiko barely had time to gasp and respond with her own before he moved away, leaving her heart pounding and her muzzle tingling. "I think I like that look as well, Keiko. Seth. Keiko whispered, grabbing his armored hand with urgency. Their eyes searched one another. "Come back…the job isn't done yet. The mercenary slowly lifted his mask to his face, fixing it in place and activating the program in their lenses. His terminal was already tuned to the correct, encrypted channels. She was going to witness their operation from the inside. He left her side and opened the door, casting one final glance behind him as he departed. It was something he'd never done before on an op. Seeing Keiko standing gracefully, draped in cloth and gold within his shrine was more than worth it. "I will. Hey hey, look what the Captain dragged in. A veteran Sekhama called, pointing to Spot as the young wild dog entered the palace armory. "Time to earn that badge, Spot. Another called supportively, banging on his locker as the rest soon joined in, raising a cacophony of noise typical of a group of young men whose job it was to kill in the name of the crown. Spot replied to the attention with a brief wave, hustling to his locker to throw on his helmet and equip his sidearm. He'd already dressed himself in the rest of his urban combat gear, the ballistic and magicite resistant plating easily doubling his profile. The young Sekhama moved on to the rows of primary weapons and shields of various makes and sizes. He selected a non-elemental shotgun with a bayonet mount, receiving a handful of approving looks. Such makes and models were considered rare, but the old weapons based on older human technology could not be matched in terms of raw stopping power. "Going big, Spot? Your shoulder's gonna be aching tomorrow. Another of his brothers called. Spot remained calm under his helmet, accepting of whatever his fellows decided to throw his way. It was all in fun, and if he survived he'd be on the other end the next time a greenhorn got his first sortie. He nodded to acknowledge them all before heading to the armory door. "Woah buddy, you psyched yourself out. An imposing water buffalo asked, reaching out to grab him by the shoulder. "Transports are that way, kid. There's something I need to do in the infirmary. Spot replied. "I won't miss the transport. See to it you don't, Spot, or Octavia's going to have your hide. With that he was allowed to leave, his brothers in arms watching as he went. The locker room banter continued unabated. "Hey, isn't that whore in the infirmary, the one Oz is patching up? She's the only one, right. What do you think? Spot's got a taste for the underbelly? Kinky shit, man. Heard she's got no tail and crazy eyes. Didn't think he had it in him; kid might not be a total fish after all. He passed his sims, focus on yourself. Fuck you man, you know the sims ain't shit. Yeah, but if he's got some street pussy waiting for him…" She's full tubes you dipshit, not that that would stop you. Just cause I killed more Trang'aul than you did. That only counts as one and you know it. Bullshit. Dude they shot each other, give it a rest. All of you best get your heads in the game. The Trang'aul were easy mode. Bro, the Oro ain't got shit on us. That assumes we get in there alive. Why the fuck are you such a downer. Cause cynical assholes like me tend to make it back alive. Hey Eina. Spot called softly, lifting his visor as he approached the bed. He could see more of her now. The breathing tube had been removed, as well as the coverings over her face and chest. Most of the tubes remained however, as well as the azure IV. The beeping of her heart monitor was the only other sound in the infirmary. "I just wanted you to know that Jace and Keiko are doing well. The handmaidens can barely keep themselves under control trying to baby them. Keiko acts like she's used to it but Jace is constantly gaping at 's cute. Spot trailed off, finding it hard to keep looking at her unmoving form. "I'm going tonight, on my first op. I'm going to kill the bastards that did this to you. he promised, reaching tentatively over the railing of the gurney and softly taking a couple of her fingers in his hand. He couldn't feel much through his gloves, they were limp. "I'm going to come back too for me, please. Spot blinked rapidly and clenched his jaw, trying to keep himself under control as he laid her hand gently back on the bed. "Goodbye, Eina. Feel better, alright. The young Sekhama turned away and headed back to the entrance, his boots falling heavily on the floor. He didn't notice as her head shifted slightly, blurry and weak eyes opening just enough to make out a spotted tail as the doors to the infirmary slid shut. "I thought I might find you here. Octavia called, the armored lion resting against the wall as Spot entered the hallway. He saluted his superior. The lion had changed out of his ceremonial palace armor and into his street gear. With his tower shield he'd be as wide as the small alleys of the slums. "I was just heading to the transports now, sir. I'm so

You know the feeling you get when something just isnt right? That feeling of some unseen eye crawling over your body, making a shiver creep up your spine and goosebumps prickle on your arms…that feeling of dread as the primal, lizard voice screams in the back of your deepest thoughts “Danger! Danger! Proceed no further…”? Sure you know it. Everyone has experienced it a time or two. Were trained from a young age that the monster in the closet isnt real, that nothing is under our bed and the shadows on the walls are our minds playing tricks on us. Unlike hunger, or our need for oxygen, the “somethings off” feeling is one our species purposely dampens. Were taught to seek out the logical reason, to assume were paranoid and laugh it off. The truth is, the feeling IS a survival instinct, and sometimes, something just ISNT right. The lizard voice was blaring, clawing at my brain as my cars headlights sliced through the darkness and fell upon the weathered wooden sign. Faint, white letters read “Welcome to Cedar Hollow”. The planks of wood making up the sign were an ashy gray, and someone had clearly taken potshots at the unkempt monument. Yes, as we neared the roadside sign, overgrown with weeds and its foreboding letters, my lizard voice was begging. Alas, Id been trained so well that I chalked my bad feeling up to the late hour and the fact that our GPS had lost signal miles before, not to mention our phones were useless with their own “no signal” messages. Good old Appalachia. “Thats weird…” The bookish young woman riding shotgun uttered as she trailed her index finger along the accordion map. “What is? ” I asked keeping my eyes on the road. “Cedar Hollow isnt on the map…” She spoke, moving her index finger to the bridge of her nose where she pushed up her stylish glasses. “Well baby, that map is newish…” I reasoned. “West Virginia isnt like Florida. Hills and Valleys galore, and I wouldnt be surprised if some places just get forgotten out here…” Forgotten. Poor choice of words, as they did nothing to assuage my discomfort, and I could tell that Jordans unease was just as palpable as she folded the map and crossed her slender arms over her university sweatshirt. Perhaps her own lizard voice was hissing. I tossed a glance her way as we passed the ancient sign, autumn leaves billowing around our tires, fluttering down in the darkness behind us as we traversed the winding road. “How you doing? ” I asked her. She turned her eyes from the dense woods outside of the passenger window toward me. She truly was stunning in an unconventional way. With one hand she pushed the shaggy, shoulder-length mahogany hair behind her ear, and looked nervously at me with amber eyes. She took a deep, wavering breath before speaking. “My parents arent racist-” She started but was cut off by my sigh. “Cmon Jord, you said youd tell them-” I got out before the petite girl interrupted. “I know, I did, and I tried Ben…I just dont know how to bring it up. ” She said, sounding sincerely apologetic. “Whats wrong with, ‘Hey mom and dad, the guy supporting me through this tragedy and driving me all the way to Delaware…who Ive been dating for the last year…happens to be black. ” I said, slyly grinning as I gave her a side-eyed look, my dorkiness apparently shining through as she cracked a smile. “I really am sorry, Ben. ” She said softly through her grin. “All good baby, if they dont like me, its whatever, as long as you do. ” My words oozed cheese. “Besides we may not even make the funeral, I have no clue where were at. ” I added. My bad news seemed insignificant compared to hers, so I was confident I would stay out of the doghouse. The endless forest that surrounded us all but blocked out any light from the sky, and the moonbeams that did manage to cut through the foliage made the trees look skeletal…sinister. Even the pines looked like they were watching with an unnatural amount of glowing eyes as we traveled the barren road. Again, that primal voice did its best to reach me, but I told it that those weren't eyes, of course they weren't. Logic said that those pinholes of glowing light were nothing more than the moon peeking through the branches. Nothing more. “Hey! ” Jordan said, tearing me from my thoughts. “What is that? ” She squinted behind her glasses and pressed a finger against the windshield. “Some kind of sign, maybe? ” I offered, looking at the blue glow in the sky that peered back at us through the branches. “Oh my god! Can we stop? I have GOT to pee, and we should call Mom and Dad…let them know where we are. ” Jordan spoke, a certain chirp of relief in her voice. I suppose signs of society had brought down her stress level. Not mine. It was 2AM and we were deep in a West Virginia hollow…what business, out in the middle of nowhere, was open? “Maybe you can finally tell them youre bringing a black man to their nephews funeral? ” I asked in a scolding tone. “Suck it. ” She returned, rolling her lovely eyes. No further words were exchanged between us as we closed the distance to the glowing light. As the trees became less dense, their naked branches parted…the pole sign became clearer. A faint, white glow emanated from the sign, welcoming us with blue, cartoon letters to the small gas station between the road and tree line. It was literally the only building wed seen for miles, and its very existence felt off. “Gasser Up…” I read the marquees words and followed it with a long, exasperated sigh as I pulled the car next to the lone pump beneath the canopy connected to the small mart. Jordan groaned at the hillbilly name of the service station before asking, “Are they open, you think? ” with a bit more hesitance in her words. Her lizard voice must have been whispering. “Lights on inside…” I said, throwing the car into park and gesturing with my head toward the illuminated frosted glass door that read“WELCOME”. “…And look. ” I finished by pointing to the only other vehicle in the modest parking lot. It sat cater-cornered in a space to the right of the buildings entrance. A deep red sports car with tinted windows and a decal on the back reading “Its a Way of Life” next to a graphic of a palm with the ring finger tucked under. “The Shocker”. “Great…maybe Chad in the douche-mobile can give us directions to the nearest rave…” Jordan huffed. “You can stay here if you want. ” I offered as I opened my door. Cool, night air tickled the flesh of my neck, and the sounds of nature filled my ears…insects chirping, owls hooting. Then came the smell. Sulfury…burning…the vague hint of roadkill. “Yeah…no thanks. ” She said. Still, she didnt move to open her door until Id exited and crossed the vehicle and stood nearby. That “off” feeling was in full force as I stood there waiting for my girlfriend. I felt watched, but not only that. I felt vulnerable, like an ant beneath a magnifying glass under the hot summer sun…I felt exposed. The light breeze surrounding me caused it to feel as if something were softly brushing against the left side of my face, and sound of breaking twigs and crunching leaves unsettled me. I wasted no time grabbing Jordans hand and leading her past the pump, toward the glowing doorway. I had to force myself to keep my cool, to tell myself that I was just being paranoid, as we crossed the small parking lot hand in hand. There was something about our footfalls, the sound and feel like we were walking through something sticky, and more than once Id glanced down to verify that the asphalt was simply that. In moments, we reached the lit door, the inside of the store obscured by the frosted glass. I placed my free hand on the handle, but before I could open it, Jordan spoke. “Ben…this feels bad. ” She whispered, squeezing my hand and shifting her weight between her feet. I tried reassuring her with a smile, to tell her with my eyes that everything was okay, but the truth is that we were both feeling that discomfort, but moreover, I didnt want to walk back to the car and drive further into the unknown without some semblance of a plan. Who knows how far wed have to drive before another opportunity presented itself. It was my job as boyfriend to protect Jordan, and at the time I felt the best way to do that was to project a false bravado, to convey to her that Id keep her safe. I tugged on the doors handle, and was actually a bit surprised when it opened with no resistance, a little jingle accompanying the motion. I stepped inside with Jordan following closely. The place looked…normal. Well, normal for Appalachian back woods. Drab, mustard-colored wallpaper lined the shop, and a couple of mounted buck heads flanked a stuffed bobcat above a door directly in front of us. The male and female stick figures adorning said door marked it as a unisex restroom. Jordan let out a relieved sigh and released my hand before pushing past me and making a beeline for the door. I couldnt help snickering ad rolling my eyes as I watched the petite girl scurry, doing that dance where youre on the verge of bursting. She disappeared into the room a second later, and I took a moment to observe the convenience store. To my right I saw a small refrigerated cooler housing a variety of beverages, and between where I stood and the restroom was a couple of rows of products. Chips, candy, knickknacks…they made the small building feel cramped. Then there was the checkout counter to my immediate left, and the small cigarette display behind it. No one was manning it, and I took note of what appeared to be a tiny office behind the desk. I took a few steps closer to the counter, and saw that sitting upon its surface was a silver bell. The kind youd see at a hotel…god, its always awkward when you have to hit one of those things. You feel so, I dont know…needy, I guess. I hesitated for a second before placing an open palm over the device, and giving the bell a soft slap. A sharp “DIN
