", fragt Teenager Aidan (Jaeden Lieberher) die Verlobte seines Vaters und damit Stiefmutter in spe Grace (Riley Keough). Komische Frage? Nein, gute Frage, sehr gute sogar. Denn zum einen legt die Situation, in der sich Aidan und seine kleine Schwester Mia (Lia McHugh) zusammen mit Grace befinden, nahe, dass etwas fürchterlich falsch ist. Kaum haben die drei die erste Nacht im Ferienhaus der Familie in der tief verschneiten Provinz verbracht, verschwinden Kleider und Essen, fällt der Strom aus, das Wasser ebenso. Dieses Wissen macht in "The Lodge" einen subtilen, aber entscheidenden Unterschied - wie so vieles sonst in diesem exquisiten Werk. Denn Horrorfilme gibt es zwar fast so lang wie das Kino selbst, doch die längste Zeit waren sie in einer Welt angesiedelt, in der es sie selbst nicht zu geben schien. " Frauen gingen deshalb allein nächtliche Straßen ab, Suchtrupps trennten sich, obwohl vorher dringend geraten wurde, immer beisammenzubleiben, und dunkle Häuser, in denen sich womöglich Gewaltverbrecher versteckten, wurden betreten, ohne die Ankunft der Polizei abzuwarten. In den Neunzigern fingen die "Scream"- und "Scary Movie"-Reihen schließlich an, Witze über diese Art von Genre-Unbewusstsein zu machen und verstiegen sich zum Meta-Zitatereigen. "What's your favorite scary movie? ", fragt der Mörder gleich am Anfang von "Scream" (1996) sein erstes Opfer. Eine Kleinfamilie in einem abgelegenen Haus - das hat nicht zuletzt bei "The Shining" zu einem axtschwingenden Vater geführt und mündete auch schon in "Ich seh ich seh", dem gefeierten Spielfilmdebüt von Franz und Fiala, in einem Feuerinferno. Traditionalistische Horrorfans, die stetig anwachsende Spannung und ebenso eskalierende Gewalt erwarten, wird "The Lodge" trotzdem frustrieren. In ihrem Zwillingshorror "Ich seh ich seh" verfolgten Franz und Fiala noch eine Grundidee mit grandioser Unnachgiebigkeit. Von einem Schockmoment am Anfang abgesehen, gehen sie hier nun in die Fläche und schreiten diese zusammen mit Thimios Bakatakis hinter der Kamera ("The Lobster", "The Killing of a Sacred Deer") fast schon provozierend gelassen ab. Im Gegensatz zu Ari Aster, der sich in "Midsommar" angesichts der Fülle von verfügbaren Zeichen und Zitaten in der Beliebigkeit verlor, läuft bei Franz und Fiala jedoch ein Erzählstrang mit, den sie nie fallen lassen: der von familiären Traumata. Die Kinder haben vor Kurzem ihre Mutter gewaltvoll verloren und machen dafür Grace als neue Partnerin des Vaters verantwortlich. Grace wiederum ist in einem evangelikalen Kult aufgewachsen. Als die Sekte kollektiven Suizid begann, war sie die einzige, die überlebte. Womöglich könnten die drei irgendwann den Schrecken hinter sich lassen - wenn Graces Therapeut nicht ausgerechnet Vater Richard wäre, der es zudem für eine gute Idee hält, traumatisierte Kinder und traumatisierte Stiefmutter die Familienzusammenführung allein proben zu lassen. Die grauenhaften Möglichkeiten, die sich aus dieser Konstellation heraus ergeben, sind, wie gesagt, vielgestaltig. Am Schluss ist der größte Horror in "The Lodge" jedoch, mit welcher Konsequenz Franz und Fiala die Psychologie ihrer Geschichte zu Ende führen. That night, Aidan and Mia access their father's computer and uncover Grace's past, including disturbing video footage of the cult, showing each of the deceased followers draped in purple silk with a strip of duct tape across their mouths reading "Sin". Several days before Christmas, the four arrive at the lodge, where the children act openly hostile toward Grace and refuse efforts to bond with them. When Richard departs back to the city for a work obligation, the children continue to act abrasively toward Grace, often completely ignoring her. Grace's stress is compounded by the abundance of Catholic iconography in the cabin, which causes her to have nightmares about her father. Buried in the snow, she discovers a photo of Aidan and Mia in a memorial frame, and inside, finds the children frantically praying over a newspaper article detailing the deaths of all three from carbon monoxide poisoning on December 22nd. Aidan hysterically insists they are in purgatory, and appears to hang himself in the attic?which he survives?as proof that they are dead. Grace suffers a nervous breakdown, which intensifies when she finds her dog frozen to death outside. She then enters a catatonic state on the porch. Worried she might die of exposure, the children finally admit to Grace that they have been gaslighting her the entire time, having drugged her, hidden their possessions in a crawlspace, and played recordings of her father's sermons at night via a wireless speaker; Mia has been calling Richard daily so he will not suspect something is wrong. With their own phones dead at last, the children unsuccessfully attempt to start the generator and bring Grace her medication, but find her wholly convinced they are in purgatory and must do penance to ascend to heaven. That night, the children find Grace burning herself on the hearth. They barricade themselves in the attic, but are confronted by Grace in the morning, who insists they must "sacrifice something for the Lord. The lodge season 1 episode 1. The lodge www. I came in and thought this is going to be a 'sinister, paranormal' type of a horror movie (according to the unreliable trailer) but it turned out to be a psychological thriller that rattled me.

All through the movie i was trying to realize what is this dark entity that is haunting the characters. Then it turned out to be nothing but a faux that shocked me. I liked this film. It was definitely a nice experience watching it. But during the watch i was so confused on what was going on. If this is what the creators intended to do by making this film then very good job. But I feel that that confused feeling is kind of what made this film not as good as I wanted it to be. Other than that- great making. Photography is good and the main atmosphere this film has is a character on its own.

Der Hype um das österreichische Regieduo war, auch international, durchaus vergleichbar mit jenem um einen Ari Aster, dessen Erstlingswerk ?Hereditary? vier Jahre später von vielen zu einem der besten Horrorfilme aller Zeiten auserkoren wurde. Nun finden diese beiden Beiträge in Franz? und Fialas Folgefilm ?The Lodge? auf gewisse Art und Weise zusammen. Optisch und akustisch erinnert der Schneehüttenhorror nämlich derart stark an Asters Debüt, dass man fast schon von inszenatorischem Abschreiben sprechen möchte. Allein der Trailer funktioniert nach demselben audiovisuellen Prinzip. Das muss aber erst einmal gar kein Problem sein. Gut kopiert ist immer noch besser als schlecht selbst gemacht. Doch wie schon der sich einzig und allein auf einen vom Prolog an vorhersehbaren Twist stützende ?Ich seh, ich seh? ist auch ?The Lodge? in erster Linie Blendwerk, das sich auf Mechanismen und Motive verlässt, die sich andere (Horror-)Filmer aktueller Generation längst zu eigen gemacht haben. Und verlässt man einmal den Filmsektor, kommt man im Falle von ?The Lodge? sogar noch zu weiteren, deutlich abstruseren Vergleichen: Die Handlung erinnert zum Beispiel stark an einen mehrere Jahre alten Donald-Duck-Cartoon. Von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten Journalist Richard (Richard Armitage) beschließt, die Weihnachtsferien mit seinen beiden Kindern Mia (Lia McHugh) und Aidan (Jaeden Martell) sowie seiner neuen Freundin Grace (Riley Keough) in seiner gemütlichen, verschneiten Waldhütte in den Bergen zu verbringen. Doch seine Kinder sind davon alles andere als begeistert: Sie trauen ihrer ?zukünftigen Stiefmutter? nicht über den Weg ? und lassen sie das auch bei jeder Gelegenheit spüren. Als Richard beruflich für ein paar Tage in die Stadt fahren muss und seine Familie alleine in den Bergen zurück lässt, passieren jeden Tag neue, unheimliche Ereignisse, die Mia und Aidan in ihrer Meinung bestärken, dass mit Grace irgendetwas nicht stimmt. Und als die Geschwister dann auch noch äußerst grausamen Details aus Graces Kindheit auf die Spur kommen, beginnt ein zunehmend eskalierendes Katz-und-Maus-Spiel, das die Drei an die Grenzen des Wahnsinns ? und hindurch ? führt? Zugegeben: Der Einstieg in ?The Lodge? trifft einen mit voller Wucht in die Magengrube. Dabei packen die auch für das Drehbuch mitverantwortlichen Franz und Fiala sowie Autor Sergio Casci (?The Caller?) hierfür noch nicht mal einen besonders innovativen Überraschungseffekt aus, sondern bedienen sich ganz einfach an Genre-Großmeistern wie ?Psycho?-Regisseur Alfred Hitchcock oder ?Scream?-Mastermind Wes Craven, indem sie für wenige Minuten Alicia Silverstone (?Book Club ? Das Beste kommt noch?) als Hauptfigur etablieren, eh diese sich kurz darauf vor laufender Kamera in den Kopf schießt. Im ersten Moment ist das schockierend, im zweiten aber schon gar nicht mehr so sehr. Das direkte Zeigen des Selbstmordes hätte es ohnehin nicht gebraucht. Zwischen diesem und den eigentlichen Ereignissen vergeht ein Zeitsprung über mehrere Monate, sodass die direkten Folgen des Suizids gar nicht so sehr thematisiert werden. Die Erwähnung des Muttertodes hätte völlig genügt, um das Szenario zu etablieren, das Zeigen des Selbstmords entpuppt sich somit schnell als Effekthascherei. Im Fokus von ?The Lodge? steht nämlich ohnehin der fragwürdige Patchwork-Familienurlaub, den Vater Richard gemeinsam mit seinen Kindern und der von ihnen verhassten neuen Freundin unternimmt. Und schon da beginnt das Problem. Denn High-Concept-Prämisse hin oder her: Um zu schlucken, dass ein Vater seine noch deutlich vom Tod der leiblichen Mutter gezeichneten Kinder mit der neuen, alles andere als in die Familie integrierten Partnerin alleine lässt und diese aufgrund einer Sekten-Vergangenheit zudem in einem psychisch äußerst labilen Zustand ist, muss man schon beide Augen ganz fest zudrücken, um nicht durchgehend die Grundidee infrage zu stellen und den handelnden Figuren die aus dem Ruder geratenen Ereignisse dadurch irgendwie auch ein Stückweit zu gönnen. Schneehorror auf den Spuren alter Meister Aber nehmen wir einmal an, dass man sich mit der Grundidee halbwegs arrangiert, funktioniert zu Beginn von ?The Lodge? zumindest das Spiel mit den Feindbildern. Wie es das Skript nämlich hinbekommt, dass sich über einen ziemlich langen Zeitraum gar nicht so recht erkennen lässt, ob nun Sektenflüchtling Grace oder doch die beiden Kinder Böses im Schilde führen, ist über weite Strecken die größte Stärke des Films. Sowohl Riley Keough (?American Honey?) als auch die beiden Filmgeschwister Jaeden Martell (?Es: Kapitel II?) und Lia McHugh (?Along comes the Devil?) nehmen einander nichts an unnahbar-düsterer Präsenz, indem sich beide Parteien immer wieder gegenseitig testen und provozieren. Inwiefern bei Grace Unsicherheit die Ursache für ihren bisweilen ungelenken Umgang mit den Kids ist, oder sie ganz bewussten Psychoterror betreibt, bleibt ebenso lange offen wie die Frage, ob die diabolischen Gesichtsausdrücke der Kinder eher der der Marke ?Hunde die bellen, beißen nicht? entstammen, oder ob man es bei Aidan und Mia mit den inoffiziellen Nachfolgern der sadistischen Zwillinge aus ?Ich seh, ich seh? zu tun hat. Darstellerisch ist das hier in den ruhigen Momenten jedenfalls ganz großes Kino, was sich allerdings ändert, sobald die Geschehnisse in der Hütte schleichend eskalieren. Was mit verschwundenem Proviant und stillstehenden Uhren im ganzen Haus beginnt und mit unheimlichen Stimmen und Geräuschen weitergeführt wird, mündet schließlich in immer hanebücheneren Symbolen, Motiven und Visionen, eh Aidan eine obskure Erklärung nach der anderen auspackt, bis man schon allein deshalb auf Graces Seite sein muss, weil man genauso wenig wie sie weiß, was hier eigentlich ? im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ? gespielt wird. All diesen skurrilen Verwicklungen gleicht sich auch das Spiel des Dreiergespannes an, das groß gestikulierend beginnt und schließlich am Overacting kratzt. Im Anbetracht des erzählerischen Verlaufs ist das allerdings sogar konsequent; Aus dem Psychodrama wird heillos konstruierter Over-the-Top-Horror, den man, wie schon die eigentliche Prämisse, jedoch kaum ernst nehmen kann, wodurch er einen Großteil seines Schreckens verliert. Das können die Macher mit ihrer zwar sehr stark von bestehenden Horrorfilmen und Regiestilen inspirierte (oder eben geklauten), aber immerhin wirkungsvollen Inszenierung ein Stückweit ausgleichen. Wenngleich das Puppenhaus-Motiv gen Ende des Films sogar inhaltlich seine erzählerische Zweckdienlichkeit offenbart, erinnern die Aufnahmen aus dem Inneren des Spielzeughauses sowie die Übergänge von dort in die echte Lodge einfach derart stark an ?Hereditary?, dass man den Vergleich einfach ziehen muss. Nur leider ist ?The Lodge? längst nicht so penibel durchdesignt, dass seine Kopie dem Vergleich standhalten würde. Auch die Tatsache, dass Kameramann Thimios Bakatakis bislang für einen Großteil der Yorgos-Lanthimos-Arbeiten (unter anderem ?The Killing of a Sacred Deer?) verantwortlich zeichnete, ist dem Film anzumerken. Die verzerrten Perspektiven und ungewohnten Kameraeinstellungen, die die Darsteller stets deutlich kleiner erscheinen lassen als die eigentlich ziemlich beengte Hütte um sie herum, sorgen automatisch für Unbehagen. Kein Zweifel: Inszenatorisch verstehen Severin Fiala und Veronika Franz ihr Handwerk. Auch der Verzicht auf typische Jumpscares ? selbst in Momenten, die sich ganz hervorragend dafür eignen würden ? zeugt von einer Ambition, mit denen ein Großteil aktuell geschätzter Horrorfilmer ihre Werke in Szene setzen. Wir erinnern da neben Ari Aster auch an einen Robert Eggers oder Jordan Peele. Doch letztlich stellen sich die österreichischen Genrefilmer mit ihrer von Anfang an an den Haaren herbeigezogenen Geschichte selbst ein Bein. Und dadurch, dass ihr Film eigentlich nur deshalb okay ist, weil sie munter von deutlich besseren Genrevertretern kopieren. Da greifen wir doch lieber gleich zum Original. Fazit Ganz viel ?Hereditary? hier, eine Prise Yorgos Lanthimos dort und eine Story, die man aufgrund ihrer schmerzhaft konstruierten Grundidee eigentlich von Anfang an nicht ernst nehmen kann: Auch für ?The Lodge? bedienen sich die ?Ich seh, ich seh?-Regisseure Veronika Franz und Severin Fiala lieber an Bekanntem, anstatt Neues zu kreieren. ?The Lodge? ist ab dem 6. Februar in ausgewählten deutschen Kinos zu sehen.
