Columbia Pictures | Sony Pictures | Emma Watson Instagram In the murky sea of Hollywood remakes, there are a few that actually deserve our attention. One of them is Little Women, based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved 1868 novel of the same name about an aspiring writer and her three sisters in Massachusetts during the Civil War. The 2019 movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, will be the eighth film adaptation of the novel. Here’s what we know about the remake so far: 1. Greta Gerwig wasn’t always attached to the project. Writer, actress, and director Sarah Polley ( Away from Her, Stories We Tell, Alias Grace) originally wrote the screenplay for the Little Women remake under Amy Pascal at Sony in 2015. In 2016, Gerwig took over screenwriting duties and officially signed on as director two years later. 2. A different “Emma” was also involved. Along with Gerwig, Sony originally announced that Emma Stone would be part of the remake’s main cast. In August 2018, she was replaced by Emma Watson. According to Variety sources, Stone left the project due to promotional obligations for her period film The Favourite, an award season contender. 3. The complete cast is a dream come true. It’s since been confirmed that Emma Watson is Meg (the oldest sister), with Eliza Scanlen ( Sharp Objects) as Beth (the pianist who gets sick), Florence Pugh as Amy (the youngest), and Saoirse Ronan as Jo (the writer, who was played by Winona Ryder in the 1994 film). Timothée Chalamet will be Laurie (who was played by Christian Bale in 1994), which means, yes, this is a wonderful Ladybird reunion. Meryl Streep will play Aunt March while Laura Dern is the March girls’ mother Marmee. Bob Odenkirk and Chris Cooper also have roles. 4. Timothée Chalamet only recently read Little Women for the first time. In an interview with Variety in October 2018, Chalamet admitted, “I knew Little Women; I hadn’t read it. But I’ve read it since. I understood it to be a literary classic, but it’s crazy, day by day in the rehearsals, I get more imbued in the legend of it all. ” 5. Filming commenced in October 2018 in Massachusetts and lasted for just over two months. The wrap date is according to Laura Dern, who wrote on Instagram, “What an incredible family. What an amazing time! Thank you Louisa. And thank you Massachusetts. ” 6. The film will open on Christmas Day 2019. Thank you, Greta Gerwig and company, for already giving the world the best gift of all. Mulherin's philly reservation. Mulherzinhas cinema lisboa. I see Saoirse Ronan as guest, I click (and watch. When I heard Greta Gerwig was directing a new adaptation of Little Women my heart sank. Was Hollywood so devoid of new ideas that we needed yet another remake? As a fan of the 1949 and 1994 versions, did we need another retelling? Well yes we did! This version is moving, uplifting, heartbreaking and beautifully shot. The characters are more rounded and even though it's Jo's story, each of the sisters shine. Particular plaudits to Florence Pugh, Emma Watson and Eliza Scanlen, none of whom are American, for their impeccable accents and performances. However, the heart that beats the fullest is Jo, played by a wonderful Saoirse Ronan, who is caring, spirited and a joy to watch. Could she finally win a deserved Oscar? Thank you Greta. Louisa M Alcott would be proud.
Jo y laurie tuvieron que terminar juntos. I loved the new movie because it made Amy into a real character. She's always been the one I identify the most with, so it makes me sad when people hate her. I understand what it's like to be the bratty one in the family, and want everything your sister has. The scene where she burns the pages because Jo left her could literally be a scene from my life (albeit one I'm not proud of) and I've felt the hurt of having your sister care about a thing more than you. Amy ends up getting everything her sister had, but my interpretation of that was a bit different from yours. With a lot of the subtext, I felt like Laurie didn't really love her that much, but she wanted so badly to be happy and have him that she ignored it. Amy gets what she wants, but she understands that by the time she does, it's often hollow or meaningless. But I don't know, that could just be me projecting onto her. Anyway, great analysis for a great movie. Keep up the good work.

Sorry, but I don't need the crew of a new adaptation telling me how 'unhappy' Jo & Laurie would have been together. People have said for years that they hated Laurie ending up with Amy, because he was basically forced into that position out of heartbreak and it seemed more like a revenge thing towards Jo than a genuine love for Amy. Jo turned down Laurie's proposal out of fear of growing up too soon. It wasn't because she was waiting for a better man to come along.

Flo and Saoirse are the women of my life. Miss Emma tho

Mulherzinhas netflix. | Roger Ebert December 21, 1994 This is a surprisingly sharp and intelligent telling of Louisa May Alcott's famous story, and not the soft-edged children's movie it might appear. There's a first-rate cast, with Susan Sarandon as the mother; Winona Ryder as the tomboy, Jo; Trini Alvarado as Meg; Kirsten Dunst and Samantha Mathis as Amy, younger and older; and Claire Danes as Beth. As the girls are courted by their neighbor ( Christian Bale) and his tutor ( Eric Stoltz), and as Jo comes under the influence of a German professor ( Gabriel Byrne), the film is true to Alcott's story about how all of life seems to stretch ahead of us when we're young, and how, through a series of choices, we choose and narrow our destiny. Advertisement The very title summons up preconceptions of treacly do-gooders in a smarmy children's story, and some of the early shots in "Little Women" do little to discourage them: In one of the first frames, the four little women and their mother manage to arrange their heads within the frame with all of the spontaneity of a Kodak ad. But this is movie is not smarmy, not dogooding, and only a little treacly; before long I was beginning to remember, from many years ago, that Louisa May Alcott's Little Women was a really good novel -- one that I read with great attention. Of course, I was 11 or 12 then, but the novel seems to have grown up in the meantime -- or maybe director Gillian Armstrong finds the serious themes and refuses to simplify the story into a "family" formula. "Little Women" may be marketed for children and teenagers, but my hunch is it will be best appreciated by their parents. It's a film about how all of life seems to stretch ahead of us when we're young, and how, through a series of choices, we narrow our destiny. The story is set in Concord, Mass., and begins in 1862, in a winter when all news is dominated by the Civil War. The March family is on its own; their father has gone off to war. Times are hard, although it's hard not to smile when we find out how hard: "Firewood and lamp oil were scarce, " we hear, while seeing the Marches living in what passes for poverty: a three-story colonial, decorated for a Currier and Ives print, with the cheerful family cook in the kitchen and the Marches sitting around the fire, knitting sweaters and rolling bandages. The movie doesn't go the usual route of supplying broad, obvious "establishing" scenes for each of the girls; instead, we gradually get to know them, we sense their personalities, and we see how they relate to one another. The most forcible personality in the family is the tomboy daughter Jo, played in a strong and sunny performance by Winona Ryder. She wants to be a writer, and stages family theatricals in which everyone -- even the long-suffering cat -- is expected to play a role. The others include wise Meg (Trini Alvarado) as the oldest; winsome Amy (Kirsten Dunst) as the youngest, and Beth, poor little Beth (Claire Danes), as the sickly one who survives a medical crisis but is much weakened ("Fetch some vinegar water and rags! We'll draw the fever down from her head! "). There isn't a lot of overt action in their lives, but then that's typical of the 19th century novel about women, which essentially shows them sitting endlessly in parlors, holding deep conversations about their hopes, their beliefs, their dreams and, mostly, their marriage destinies. The March girls have many other interests (their mother, played by Susan Sarandon, is what passed 130 years ago for a feminist), but young men and eligible bachelors rank high on the list. Their young neighbor is Laurie (Christian Bale), a playmate who is allowed to join their amateur theatricals as an honorary brother, and who eventually falls in love with Jo. Then there's Laurie's tutor, the pleasant Mr. Brooke (Eric Stoltz), who is much taken with Meg, but is dismissed by Jo as "dull as powder. " Jo, who moves to New York and starts to write lurid Victorian melodramas with titles like The Sinner's Corpse, falls under the eye of a European scholar, Friedrich Bhaer (Gabriel Byrne), who takes her seriously enough to criticize her work. He knows she can do better -- why, she could write a novel named Little Women if she put half a mind to it. "I'm hopelessly flawed, " Jo sighs. But she is not. And late in the film, when she tells Friedrich that, yes, it's all right for him to love her, Ryder's face lights up with a smile so joyful it illuminates the theater. "Little Women" grew on me. At first, I was grumpy, thinking it was going to be too sweet and devout. Gradually, I saw that Gillian Armstrong (whose credits include "My Brilliant Career" and " High Tide ") was taking it seriously. And then I began to appreciate the ensemble acting, with the five actresses creating the warmth and familiarity of a real family. The buried issues in the story are quite modern: How must a woman negotiate the right path between society's notions of marriage and household, and her own dreams of doing something really special, all on her own? One day, their mother tells them: "If you feel your value lies only in being merely decorative, I fear that someday you might find yourself believing that's all you really are. Time erodes all such beauty, but what it cannot diminish is the wonderful workings of your mind. " Quite so. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

With her husband off at war, Marmee (Sarandon) is left alone to raise their four daughters, her Little Women. There is the spirited Jo (Ryder); conservative Meg (Trini Alvarado, Paulie); fragile Beth (Claire Danes, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet); and romantic Amy (played at different agesby Kristen Dunst, Wag the Dog and Samantha Mathis, Broken Arrow). As the years pass, the sisters share some of the most cherished and painful memories of self-discovery, as Marmee and Aunt March (Mary Wickes, The Man Who Came to Dinner) guide them through issues of independence, romance and virtue.
