It¡Çs no secret that the Hollywood Comet loves musicals. In 2010, I revealed I had seen 400 movie musicals over the course of eight years. Now that number is over 600. To celebrate and share this musical love, here is my weekly feature about musicals. This week¡Çs musical: Doctor Dolittle (1967) ? Musical #623 Studio: 20th Century Fox Director: Richard Fleischer Starring: Rex Harrison, Samantha Eggar, Anthony Newley, Richard Attenborough, Peter Bull, William Dix, Geoffrey Holder, Portia Nelson, Norma Varden, Judy the Chimpanzee, Jack Raine (uncredited) Plot: Set in 1845 in England, Doctor Dolittle (Harrison) is the best animal doctor, because he can speak to animals. Dr. Dolttle and his friends (Newly, Dix, Eggar) travel on a sea voyage to find the giant pink sea snail. Trivia: ? The film is based on Hugh Lofting¡Çs character Doctor Dolittle, who introduced in stories in 1920 and featured in 13 books. The film combines the books ¡ÈThe Story of Doctor Dolittle, ¡É ¡ÈThe Voyages of Doctor Dolittle¡É and ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle¡Çs Circus. ¡É ? Rex Harrison temporarily walked off the film, and Christopher Plummer was approached for the role and accepted. When Harrison heard Plummer accepted the lead role, he came back on the film, and Plummer was paid the full salary, according to his autobiography In Spite of Myself: A Memoir by Christopher Plummer. ? The first film version of Doctor Dolittle. It was retold as a comedy in 1998 with Eddie Murphy and an adventure film in 2020 with ? Samantha Eggar was dubbed by Diana Lee ? Leslie Bricusse wasn¡Çt present at the Academy Awards and Sammy Davis, Jr. accepted the award on his behalf ? Alan Jay Lerner was originally going to score the film but backed out. Leslie Bricusse replaced Lerner. ? The script originally included a character named Bombo and Sammy Davis Jr. was cast. Davis was then replaced by Sidney Poitier, but the character was written out of the story. Samantha Eggar, Anthony Newly and Rex Harrison in ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle¡É Awards and Nominations: ? L. B. Abbott won the Academy Award for Best Effects, Special Effects ? Leslie Bricusse won the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song for the song ¡ÈTalk to the Animals. ¡É ? Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture ? Robert Surtees was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography ? Nominated for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration ? Nominated for Best Sound ? Marjorie Fowler and Samuel E. Beetley were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film Editing ? Leslie Bricusse was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music, Original Music Score ? Lionel Newman and Alexander Courage were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment Notable Songs: ? ¡ÈTalk to the Animals¡É performed by Rex Harrison ? ¡ÈI¡Çve Never Seen Anything Like It¡É performed by Richard Attenborough ? ¡ÈMy Friend the Doctor¡É performed by Anthony Newley Tommy Dix, Anthony Newly and Rex Harrison in ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle¡É My review: I¡Çm convinced that people who don¡Çt like musicals dislike them because of the late-1960s musicals like ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle. ¡É Following the success of ¡ÈThe Sound of Music¡É (1964), studios hopped on the bandwagon in search of the same prosperity ¡Ä and usually failing. Films like ¡ÈGoodbye, Mr. Chips¡É (1969) or ¡ÈFinian¡Çs Rainbow¡É (1968) are all over-bloated epics, running at more than 2 hours and with songs that aren¡Çt very memorable. ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle¡É (1967) is no exception. Running at 2 hours and 32 minutes, the film mashes together several of Hugh Lofting¡Çs Doctor Dolittle stories. The result of this is that the film seems all over the place. The audience first meets Dr. Dolittle when he is visited by Matthew Mugg, introducing him to young Tommy Stubbins and bringing an injured duck. We learn that Dr. Dolittle can talk to animals, is a vegetarian because animals are his friend, and why he is no longer a people doctor. From there, he is awarded a two-headed llama (that they call a push-pull) that he sells to a circus so he can earn money for an around the world sea voyage in search of a giant snail. But before he goes on the journey, he is accused of murder when he tosses a seal dressed like a woman into the sea. No one believes that it was a seal, but they think it¡Çs a woman. Once escaping jail, Dr. Dolittle, Mathew, Tommy and Emma Fairfax travel across the sea in search of the snail. They shipwreck on a moving island, inhabited by well-read natives. Phew! I feel like, maybe, if the writers had stuck to one or two of these stories, this film would have felt less all over the place. But it wouldn¡Çt have saved the film. Leslie Bricusse¡Çs songs in ¡ÈWilly Wonka¡É or ¡ÈScrooge¡É are much more memorable and catchy than they are here. ¡ÈTalk to the Animals¡É is a famous song, but is there a tune? Who can tell with Rex Harrison¡Çs talk-singing. The only other song that was stuck in my head was ¡ÈMy Friend the Doctor. ¡É Rex Harrison is a fine actor, but who decided he should be in musicals? I know he was on Broadway, which makes it all the more baffling. All he does is talk with an orchestra playing in the background. You think, ¡ÈOh, I guess this is a song since there is music backing his talking. ¡É Early in the filming, Harrison walked off the film and was replaced by Christopher Plummer. I like Plummer more, but I don¡Çt think his casting would have made the film any better. The only thing I can say is maybe we could decipher the songs a bit more because Plummer probably would have been dubbed as he was in ¡ÈSound of Music. ¡É Samantha Eggar is in a thankless role as Emma Fairfax, the niece of a magistrate who accuses Dr. Dolittle of murder and stealing one of his horses. Eggar¡Çs singing is dubbed, and her character is a bit fickle. First, Emma seems to love Matthew and then appears to be in love with Dr. Dolittle, who turns her down because he¡Çs terrible with people. I don¡Çt feel like Eggar¡Çs character of Emma Fairfax is ever fully explained, and we are never really given a reason to like her or care about the character. Matthew is played by Anthony Newley, who is not a favorite of mine. Tommy Stubbins is played by William Dix (no relation to Richard Dix). This was Dix¡Çs second film and his last film until 2011. Richard Attenborough plays the circus owner who I didn¡Çt readily recognize. It was interesting to see him sing, as I didn¡Çt know he could! The real highlight was Geoffrey Holder as William Shakespeare X, one of the island inhabitants. I know Holder best from his role in ¡ÈAnnie¡É (1982), so seeing him in an earlier role was a treat! Overall, I found ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle¡É (1967) exhausting, and I felt happy when it ended. I can mainly say, ¡ÈWell, I¡Çve seen it! ¡É and probably will never watch it again. ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle¡É differs from its contemporaries, like ¡ÈCamelot¡É because this film wasn¡Çt adapted from a Broadway play. I¡Çm not sure if that¡Çs a good thing or a bad thing, but it is entirely original for the screen. If you want a fun but mildly irritating animal movie of the 1960s, watch ¡ÈSammy, the Way-Out Seal¡É (1962) or ¡ÈZebra in the Kitchen¡É (1965) instead. They aren¡Çt musicals, but they are much shorter than ¡ÈDoctor Dolittle, ¡É and their plots make more sense. Sometimes you just want more for someone, even if they are rich, famous, and probably doing fine. Today, that person is Robert Downey Jr., star of Dolittle, in which he plays an eccentric doctor who can talk to garish, computer-generated animals. Dolittle is Downey¡Çs first big feature film after retiring from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet he exhibits none of the trademark charisma audiences might hope for after ten years of Tony Stark (and a few years as a pretty fun Sherlock Holmes). Like a good fairy tale, the movie delivers Doctor Dolittle¡Çs backstory via storybook illustrations: how John Dolittle and his wife devoted their lives to helping animals, could speak their languages, and how her death during a voyage at sea caused him to retreat from the world, becoming a hermit in his manor / nature preserve. He¡Çs forced to abandon his agoraphobic lifestyle when two children intrude to tell him the Queen of England is sick, and if she dies, the successor to the throne has plans to take Dolittle¡Çs estate from both him and the animals he safeguards. It¡Çs perfectly inoffensive stuff, until Robert Downey Jr. opens his mouth and starts speaking with a bizarre Welsh accent, one that you¡Çll refuse to accept for about a third of the movie and yet somehow he just keeps doing it. It¡Çs a performance that¡Çs a bummer in more ways than one. Downey Jr. has excellent manic energy that makes him well-suited to playing weirdos and misanthropes, and plenty of folks are probably hoping to see him loosen up a little post-Marvel. Unfortunately, that¡Çs very hard to do when you barely share the screen with another human being. This is where it helps to remember that Dolittle is a very expensive, high-profile kids¡Ç movie, and that these days it¡Çs quite rare to get such an expensive failure in this realm. The movie is mostly a vehicle for talking animals, and like any movie with talking animals, the menagerie talks too much. Some of this is mitigated by the fact that their voices are recognizable ? Kumail Nanjiani voices a stubborn ostrich, Jason Mantzoukas plays a very annoying dragonfly ? but the movie is also aggressively unfunny. The biggest laughs come from surprise at completely bizarre swings: a barely euphemistic dick joke; goofs about divorce and abortion (the ostrich¡Çs dad says he ¡Èshould¡Çve been an omelet¡É); and a bizarre dragon colonic, where Dolittle reaches into the giant lizard¡Çs (obscured) rectum to pull out bagpipes and a set of armor. The best stuff is from human actors who briefly appear in somewhat villainous roles. Antonio Banderas plays the king of a foreign land with a bone to pick with Dolittle, and Michael Sheen is the doctor¡Çs longtime rival. Both actors are no strangers to being the best part of whatever they¡Çre in, and they continue the streak here. Unfortunately, this movie was a disaster before the cameras even started rolling. It was initially written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, a filmmaker mostly known for serious adult dramas like Syriana. Dolittle ? then called The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, much like the classic novel it¡Çs based on ? was retooled by two different filmmakers with more family-friendly bona fides, a process that works for some big-budget films, but absolutely did not help this one. It¡Çs a mess. Dolittle is repeating history. The original 1967 Doctor Dolittle was a legendary flop that was also a notoriously troubled production, a bizarre role for its star Rex Harrison to choose and a questionable choice for all involved parties. Dolittle is much the same, a big disaster on a scale that¡Çs rarely seen ? although this time it¡Çs not because movies are rarely this expensive. It¡Çs because they¡Çre often too expensive to really be a complete failure. These days, money doesn¡Çt buy quality, but it often does buy competence. Just not all of the time. I do not regret my time spent with Dolittle. No one, as my editor reminded me, made me see it. This was entirely my decision. I do, however, feel preemptive regret on behalf of others, namely the parents who will be made to see Dolittle for what¡Çs likely to be a total of 87 times come December. The movie is dreck made just acceptable enough for children with still-developing frontal lobes, one that would bore most adults to tears if it didn¡Çt stop to do things like give a dragon a colonic. I will think a lot about the Monday night I spent watching it for another two weeks, and then I will likely forget it ever happened.

Gg This album is a 10. 0. I¡Çd say it occupies 25% of my music listening. The other 75% by Anima, In Rainbows, and Kid A lol. What can I say? I know people will say 'everyone's entitled to their own opinion etc. ' but why review an album if you're not a fan of that genre of music? I wouldn't go to Taylor Swift's album review and slag it off with a zero review score because I'm not a fan of that type of music, though 'Shake It Off' is quite catchy;-).
