Have you tried an Xacto knife? That's worked for us with UGEARS models in the past. Also, wax is definitely a must.

Hobbyist cutting tools (like Xacto knives) are a must.

Personally I use emery boards for removing burrs and an old white 3" candle for greasing gears and shafts, I use a tealight for greasing the ends of toothpicks.

Good tip, candle/bees was also helps with sticky or difficult to open wooden draws (or anything that has moving wooden surfaces). Also really good on metal curtain rails, makes the metal curtain rings slight much easier and quietly.

Gentle sanding so burrs are removed but without making the part smaller because many parts needs to fit tightly. Because they need to fit so tightly rub with a candle. Avoid using anything that penetrates into the wood as that makes the wood swell. Parts like gears and shafts needs extra attention when removing burrs and greasing them with a candle so they run as smooth as possible.

Some issues removing tiny parts, I would suggest getting a sanding sponge ( medium grit ) for the wheel.

Finally finished mine, but I must of not done something right because it doesn't even produce a hum, just scraping noises.

Not too sure if the rosin survived the trip cause it just feels like a dry rock and was just scrapping against the wheel, tried breaking off a piece to see if it'd be fresher underneath, and while it was a bit stickier, don't know if it had much effect.
Ah well, it makes for nice decor atleast!

there is a little baggy of DUST that is supposed to be the resin. How do we get a replacement for this? Or do we just order some off of Amazon or something?

You can collect the dust in a piece of cloth and rub it onto the wheel. In fact many musicians prefer this method of applying rosin to just rubbing the solid block onto their bows.

But the answer is yes, you could just buy some spare on Amazon (or any shop for musical instruments if you have one nearby) but PLEASE don't buy resin. The stuff you are looking for is rosin!!!

By putting the hammer together first- one can get used to the diagrams.

The instructions are thorough- just pay attention to the pictures. Wax when required and use plenty of rosin on the wheel- after sanding.. The wheel assembly is now complete !
To be continued.

To reduce friction/squeaking, sand any rough edges, even if it is just the slightest fraction of wood. Coat all moving surfaces in candle/bees wax. Gets a bit repetitive and annoying, but it makes the end result so much better! These types of model generally won't stand up to being taken apart and out back together again and once a piece has broken you don't get another chance. So take the time to do it right the first time.

Broke the #10 gear (my own fault, tried to push it too far) but a little superglue seems to be holding fine. Going to let my music teacher wife string and tune it to her liking. Assembly was fun if not completely easy; straightforward aside from that #10 gear. Everything moves as expected; we'll hear soon if I didn't screw anything up.

15 gears in the crank system cause a lot of resistance. Extra gearing - the pretty planetary gears do nothing but cause unneeded friction and the box must be taken apart to remove. One might consider not hooking up-
The peg box push buttons require sanding so there is NO resistance-
The crank system would be better as a direct link, rather than going through 3-4 gears on the crank side of the wheel. Needless friction should be avoided at all costs- there are gears added for a wow factor that have nothing to do with the operation.

Can I get some board replacements? #52 pieces on the Hurdy Gurdy broke quite easily even though I took much care after breaking the first piece.

Part #69 I think it was was faulty and twisted until it snapped when I first turned the tuning nut. Managed to fashion a replacement pin from spare sheet material as I didn't fancy taking the whole unit apart by that point. Might be worth trying to thicken it or making it more robust somehow. I'd also like to see improvements made to address wobble in the playing wheel.
I only broke one piece and that was the really slender part in the head where the tuning knob goes through (luckily there was a spare). But use the wax on any small parts and if anything is tough to push through. Just stop wax it and try again.

Along with sanding needed on push buttons, the rubberband return system will not accept double bands, therefore the bands should be used as single bands and knotted as single 1 unit band - due to lack of room for double....
I was able to get the two strand rubberband in the key return slots. Little tricky but it fits. Mine makes a regular clacking noise as the crank is turned. Trying to figure out where that's coming from is a bit difficult.

I find it nearly impossible to adjust the height of the melody string without slackening the tension completely- the end of the string near the knot bears against the adjusting knob so firmly that the knob will not turn.

The space where the parts are cut out is so narrow it's impossible to get any kind of box cutter knife in there. Yes, I've already started working on it. Getting the parts out is really tricky. The tolerances on each item is a bit too tight as well, and I didn't get a rosin block.

I finally got the whole thing put together. I broke one piece but the other pieces around it hold it in place so I'm hoping it won't affect the sound. I realized after I had gotten much further that there was a duplicate of the piece I broke and I didn't feel like taking it apart to fix it. If it does prove detrimental I will try to replace it.

we definitely are using Xacto knives and waxing. Just happened to break one of the skinny pieces that hold the wheel gears together and now it can't be completed.

making parts E2 when refer page 18, be careful!
when you push the gears forcefully, the gears will be broken
and need to fix it.

ok, I found my mistake: when putting together part H and D I didn't push hard enough. Now everything seems to be fixed :-)

The hole in part #97 is a little bit too big so the part does not work like a sping holding the lever in place. Fixed it by filling out the gab with a thin piece of wood.

My drone string will not sound and my wheel is different to turn to the point it won’t stay in my lap when turning. Everything is sanded and waxed. I’m afraid disassembly will be difficult and possibly break my hurdy-gurdy. :(

please find some tips:
1/ Check if the bourdon string is switched on (you can switch it on and off using a little lever in the keybox). 2/ You can adjust the height of bourdon string turning the small wheel on the bridge to get the optimal connection of the string with the wheel.

My gears squeak/chirp so loudly that the tuner can't really pick up on the sound. Is there any way to reduce the chirp/squeak sound?

before tuning the melody and then the bourdon string to the note you wish (we recomend - to the D note) and to make the sound softer please adjust the height of the strings turning the small wheels on the bridge to get the optimal connection of the strings with the wheel. The strings should touch the wheel gently.

he sound is very scratchy.

please adjust the height of both strings. The strings should touch the wheel gently. Turn the small ventils clockwise on the bridge to decrease the height and counter-clockwise to increase the height of the strings.

I got mine working after borrowing someone's rosin (cello rosin). They suggested maybe bass rosin would work even better (not as hard).

I also noticed in the Ugears videos by the pro guy that he added a bit of thread where the wheel touches the string. Googling this, it appears that gurdy players do add a bit of cotton onto the string to make a less scratchy sound. There are tutorials that show exactly how to do it.

I would also be curious if anyone does a hack to see if they can simulate a buzzing bridge. I think I'll have fun playing with an ensemble as is, but having that iconic trompette would be great.

Overall very nice design and everyone was awed by it. I hope the elastic lasts a while because I think it would nearly be impossible or very difficult to replace it without taking the thing apart (it doesn't seem like you can). I hope you work on other instruments. I think you could easily design a rebec, a dulcimer, a tromba marina or some percussive instrument.

With a bit more tinkering and rubbing weith the rosin I've started to get sound!

the last two high notes are out of tune. Is there any way to tune individual pegs?

Burdon string

I saw that the Burdon string always touches the stopper for the lever that turns off the string. Is this on purpose? Because it sounds awkwardly high.

A lot of hurdy gurdy players are saying on forums to wrap the strings with cotton for better sound quality. Has anyone tried this? If not I will report back once I get my hands on some cotton.

I put cotton on mine. It's a more mellow tone now. The pro playing it in the Ugears vid has cotton on his, if you look carefully.

I replaced the fishing line with a nylon G-String for guitars. Mine is much louder now. Could you elaborate on the cotton? What exactly do I need to get and how do I apply it?

everytime I get the strings close to or at D Frequency ~560 .... the string breaks on the wheel. What am I doing wrong here?
