Observing

In a Puyo speedrun, the players' stacking is the most important to get best record.
But also "Observing" (¶Å»ë) is important in the speedrun. Maybe it's more important than the stacks in some case.

Observing means itself, this is just to check the opponent field.

You can get following information:

  • height at middle
The information of height can decrease lethal amount.
The enough amount is around 10 rows. So the chain is required to be a 5 chain or a 4-double. but if there is 4 Puyos on opponent's middle, the lethal amount is 8 rows. And then if there is over 7 Puyos, the lethal amount is only 5 rows. this amount is same as a 4 chain.
More decreasing lethal amount, more small chain is enough. This is very advantage in the speedrun.
  • Can detect enemy attacks in advance
This is difficult in the most stages but an especially stage, for example it's effective in 2nd stage.
2nd stage, Frankly uses the Tara-stack. So his stacking is regular. You don't have to observe all moving of the enemy.
  • Pseudo next
Especially is's effective in 4th stage, coconuts. You can know the pairs that come later by checking opponent's next box. This is "Pseudo next".
The condition under which this can be done is that the opponent must be ahead of the player so that 4th stage and 2nd stage are appropriate.

My recent speedrun is with observing. Particularly it makes easier to defeat 1st stage Arms more faster.

Characteristics of the enemy

Common Feature

  • Put the Puyos to add more linkage

For example, enemies tend to put it on 3rd column. In this case, linkage of red increases 1 Puyo.

In this case, greens increase 1 Puyo and blues increase from 3 to 4 Puyos and it triggered.
And I think enemies tend to add links vertically though I'm not sure.

Enemies seem not to understand to connect separated Puyos in such situations.
  • Soft drop in case that an enemy can't put Puyos at the place enemy want to put them.
Hard drops are made after moving the puyos to the desired row, so if the puyos cannot get to the desired row, they will not be hard dropped.

For example if an enemy wants to put Puyos at 6th column but Puyos blocked by a wall in the 5th column, an enemy do the soft drop at 4th column.

Coconuts often does like this.
  • Place the different colored Puyos away from each other

So the Puyos of new color in Coconuts's field tends to be put on 3rd column.

Enemies in Later Stages

They tend to try to set up the chain. To create over t chains, it's is superfluous thinking to add linkages to 4 because it triggered by a 1 chain.
So they often deny to add link and make like a sandwich chain.

Especially they stack like this.

The priority of dining is very high so sometimes it is prior than avoiding to put on 3rd column 12th row to survive. Though very rarely, there is the case an enemy suicide.

But dining adding linkage is noise information to concern about their routine. So it's better to ignore their AI in speedrun.


Arms

  • Put 1st pair on 3rd middle.
  • He put Puyos only vertically. He never put them horizontally.
  • Before hard drop, his Puyos wander aimlessly. This is by RNG and it seems that moving is different in case that the RNG of piece table is same.
  • When Arms is gonna put Puyos on 3rd column, he doesn't wander aimlessly.

By the way, other Original Puyopuyo series, the enemy doesn't put Puyos on only 3rd column.

Frankly

  • Use Tara-stack
The Mega Drive version and the AC version have different numbers of puyos to place by Tara-stack.

Coconuts

  • Use Harpy Stack

Sprocket

  • Tend to stack over 2 chains.
  • So his space tends to be narrow.

Skweel

I think his routine is same as Humpty but Skweel use hard drop anytime so his rush attack is with garbage by falling score bonus.
