忘却からの帰還〜Atomic Age

ラスベガスは、ネバダ実験場から150kmほど離れた場所にある。そのようなラスベガスのホテルでは、1950年代後半に、核実験を鑑賞するというアトラクションが行われていた。この鑑賞パーティーを彩るショウガールたち。その最後の、そしてもっとも有名なのがLee Merlin:

On May 24, 1957, the Las Vegas News Bureau released the last and arguably most famous "Miss Atomic Bomb" photo of all to coincide with Operation Plumbbob at the NTS (Nevada Testing site).

1957年5月24日に、Las Vegas News Bureauは最後の、そしてもっとも有名な"ミス・アトミック・ボム"の写真を、ネヴァダ核実験場でのオペレーションPlumbbobの日に発表した。

Copa Room showgirl Lee Merlin poses in a cotton, mushroom cloud swimsuit as she is crowned "Miss Atomic Bomb" in this 1957 photo. Above-ground nuclear testing was a major public attraction during the late 1950s and hotels capitalized on the craze by hosting nuclear bomb watch parties which usually included the dubbing of a chorus girl as "Miss Atomic Bomb."

ミス・アトミック・ガールとして、1957年の写真で、コパルームショウガールであるLee Merlinが、コットンのキノコ雲の水着をつけてポーズをとっている。地上核実験は、1950年代後半のメジャーな一般向けアトラクションであり、この熱狂に投資したホテルは、ミス・アトミック・ボムと呼ばれるコーラスガールの参加する、核実験鑑賞パーティを開催していた。

Photographer Don English was assigned by the Las Vegas News Bureau to take a picture outside the Sands Hotel in connection with an above ground atomic test. By 1957 the repetition of the tests had inspired English to become creative in his photography on this theme. He and his colleagues designed the striking mushroom cloud that adorns the bathing suit worn by Merlin. Don English did not photograph Merlin at the exact time of the detonation. Also, the landscape behind Merlin demonstrates that the picture was taken facing east, away from the test site.

写真家Don EnglishはLas Vegas News Nureauから、Sand Hotelの外で、地上核実験に関した写真を撮ることを依頼された。1957年までに、繰り返される核実験から、彼はこのテーマでの写真はクリエイティブになってきた。彼と同僚たちは、Merlinが着けている水着につけられた、衝撃的なキノコ雲をデザインした。Don EnglishはMerlinの写真を核爆発の時刻に撮ったわけではない。Merlinの背景は東向きであり、核実験場の方向ではない。
