忘却からの帰還〜Atomic Age

1983年の核戦争テレビ映画"The Day After"に、牧師の説教のシーンがある。破壊された教会で、牧師は次のように語っている。

There was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass.

Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and the power of scorpions. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God upon their foreheads.

We here today counted among god servants. We give thanks to thee, Lord God , for rewarding your servants and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth

大地震が起きて、太陽は毛の粗い布地のように暗くなった。地上の三分の一が焼け、木々の三分の一が焼け、すべての青草も焼けてしまった。

そして、煙の中から、いなごの群れが、さそりの力が地上へ出て来た。いなごは、地の草やどんな青物も、またどんな木も損なってはならないが、ただ、額に神の刻印を押されていない人には害を加えてもよい、と言い渡された。

神の僕の一員として、私たちは今日ここにいます。あなたの僕、御名を畏れる者には、小さな者にも大きな者にも報いをお与えになり、地を滅ぼす者どもを滅ぼされることに、主よ、感謝いたします。

まさしく核戦争を描写し、「いなご」は放射能を象徴するかのように語られている。

11章17-18節

The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth"

こう言った。「今おられ、かつておられた方、全能者である神、主よ、感謝いたします。大いなる力を振るって統治されたからです。異邦人たちは怒り狂い、あなたも怒りを現された。死者の裁かれる時が来ました。あなたの僕、預言者、聖なる者、御名を畏れる者には、小さな者にも大きな者にも報いをお与えになり、地を滅ぼす者どもを滅ぼされる時が来ました。」

シナリオライターはみごとなProoftextingをしている。ただし、最後の11章17-18節は意味が違っている。ここは急性放射線障害の少女が出血して、家族に抱きかかえられて、教会を出て行くのを見つつの説教。怒れる神は消され、報いの時がきたという言葉は、報いているという事実表記に変えられている。
