忘却からの帰還〜Intelligent Design

2010年3月12日、テキサス州教育委員会は反進化論を公教育の持ち込む以外に、歴史・社会・経済などのカリキュラムにも修正を加えている。

Since January, Republicans on the board have passed more than 100 amendments to the 120-page curriculum standards affecting history, sociology and economics courses from elementary to high school. The standards were proposed by a panel of teachers.　... There are seven members of the conservative bloc on the board, but they are often joined by one of the other three Republicans on crucial votes. There were no historians, sociologists or economists consulted at the meetings, though some members of the conservative bloc held themselves out as experts on certain topics.

“I reject the notion by the left of a constitutional separation of church and state,” said David Bradley, a conservative from Beaumont who works in real estate. “I have $1,000 for the charity of your choice if you can find it in the Constitution.”

They also included a plank to ensure that students learn about “the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s, including Phyllis Schlafly, the Contract With America, the Heritage Foundation, the Moral Majority and the National Rifle Association.”

Dr. McLeroy, a dentist by training, pushed through a change to the teaching of the civil rights movement to ensure that students study the violent philosophy of the Black Panthers in addition to the nonviolent approach of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He also made sure that textbooks would mention the votes in Congress on civil rights legislation, which Republicans supported.

Other changes seem aimed at tamping down criticism of the right. Conservatives passed one amendment, for instance, requiring that the history of McCarthyism include “how the later release of the Venona papers confirmed suspicions of communist infiltration in U.S. government.” The Venona papers were transcripts of some 3,000 communications between the Soviet Union and its agents in the United States.

The board Thursday rejected a proposed standard that would have required teachers to examine the Founding Fathers' reasons for prohibiting the government from favoring one religion over another. Conservatives also prevailed on an amendment aimed at instructing students on the dangers of over-regulation on industry.

テキサス州教育委員会は木曜日(2010/03/11)に、特定宗教を選好することを政府に禁じた建国の父たちの論理を教師が試験することを義務付けるカリキュラム基準案を却下した。保守派は産業界に対する過剰な規制の危険性について生徒たちに教えることを目指した修正をしようとしている。

The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum’s world history standards on Enlightenment thinking, “replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.”

“Teachers in Texas will be required to cover the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation’s Founding Fathers, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state.”

“Board members also rejected requiring history teachers and textbooks to provide coverage on the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy and new Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, while the late President Ronald Reagan was elevated to more prominent coverage.”

テキサス州教育委員会は啓蒙思想についてのテキサス州カリキュラム世界史基準からトマス・ジャファーソンを削除し、宗教右翼が偶像視するJohn Calvinを入れた。

テキサス州の教師は、建国の父たちへのユダヤ・キリスト教の影響を教えることを義務付けられるが、政教分離原則の哲学的正当性を強調することを禁じられる。

意外と特徴的なのが次の件：

One of the subjects debated amongst the lawyers, dentists and publishers, who make up the board, was whether or not Hip Hop should be taught as a cultural movement. According to the Huffington Post, right wing members voted that Hip Hop should be deleted as a requirement and that students should not be taught about its cultural impact across not only the United States, but the world.

州教育委員会を構成する弁護士と歯科医と出版業者たちが議論した話題のひとつに、カルチャームーブメントとしてヒップホップを教えるか否かがあった。Huffington Postによれば右翼委員たちは、必須項目からヒップホップを削除し、米国および世界に対する文化的インパクトを生徒に教えるべきでないと議決した。

保守・宗教右翼・共和党支持は、リベラル・民主党支持よりも真面目らしい。ヒップホップごときを教えるなどありえないというところ。

ただ、これでも保守勢力にとってはまだまだ不足：

In economics, the revisions add Milton Friedman and Friedrich von Hayek, two champions of free-market economic theory, among the usual list of economists to be studied, like Adam Smith, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes. They also replaced the word “capitalism” throughout their texts with the “free-enterprise system.”

経済学では改訂により、Adam SmithやKal MarxやJohn Maynard Keynesと並べて、自由市場理論で著名なMilton FriedmanとFriedrich von Hayekが加えられた。さらに、「資本主義」を「自由企業体制」と置換した。

その後、最も非難の集まった「slave trade」から「Atlantic Triangular Trade」への変更が登場。全米の抵抗にあって、テキサス州教育委員会は「Transatlantic Slave Trade」で妥協したものの、それ以外の改変はそのまま通した。

CORRECTION AND UPDATE: May 24, 2110 In a last minute development, the board changed the proposal from Atlantic Triangular Trade to “Transatlantic Slave Trade” though most other history rewrites remain the same. Confederate President’s Jefferson Davis speech is given equal importance to Abraham Lincoln’s emancipation speech.

The Judeo-Christian influences of the nation’s Founding Fathers will be taught, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state. Curriculum standards also will describe the U.S. government as a “constitutional republic,” rather than “democratic,” and students will be required to study the decline in value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.
