Varves (layers of silt that show seasonal differences) do not necessarily form annually. Individual varves can form in less than a year. Thus, claims that 10,000 varve layers represent 10,000 years are unwarranted.
氷食湖の湖底堆積物の年層（シルト層の季節差）は必ずしも毎年形成されるわけではない。個々の年層は1年未満で形成される。したがって、10000の年層は1万年の経過を補償するものではない。

1. 年層の季節性は、ときどき植物の年変化による花粉の変化によって体系的に示される[Morton 2002; citing Flint 1971, 400]。
2. 少なくとも一つ、2000万の年層を含む地層が見つかっている。たとえ年層が1日1層の速さで形成されたとしても、50万年分に相当する。 シルトの細粒度は、そのような急速な形成の可能性を否定している。
3. 水月湖の45000年層は炭素14年代測定及び年輪による年代推定など他の年代測定と合致している{Kitagawa and van der Plicht 1998]。
