2001年にスティーブン バクスターによって考案されたプラネタリウム仮説は、我々の天体観測は銀河規模で物質とエネルギーを操作できるタイプ III 文明によって生み出された幻想であると主張することで、フェルミのパラドックスを解決しようとしている。これは宇宙には他の生命が存在しないように見えるように設計されているため、地球外生命体の証拠は見られないと仮定している[1]。

宇宙人が地球を訪れたことを示す、信頼できる再現可能な証拠は存在しない[2][3]。地球以外の場所で、知的地球外生命体の送信や確固たる証拠は検出または観察されていない。これは、宇宙には非常に多くの惑星が存在し、その中には生命が生息できる条件を備えている可能性が高い惑星もあるという知識に反している。生命は通常、利用可能な隙間をすべて埋めるまで拡大する[7]。これらの矛盾した事実はフェルミのパラドックスの基礎を形成し、その解決策のひとつとして提唱されているのがプラネタリウム仮説である。

この仮説は一部の著者によって推測的であると考えられており[5][6]、実際的な科学的な意味ではほとんど役に立たず、動物園仮説と並んで神学的思考様式に関連しているとさえ考えられている[7]。
